Do you count calories and Protein? Protein and carbs? All 3? I know that you need to follow what your NUT/surgeon says, but I'm curious what people have found that works for them. I sometimes feel overwhelmed counting everything, my nutritionist didn't really give me guidelines. My sample menu says 900 calories 60g of protein. My goal is always over 60g of protein and I avg closer to 70-80.

I Am wondering how you have your mfp goals set up for food. My nut doesn't have a set for mfp so I thought I'd pick y'all's brains :-) I'm talking about calories/carbs/protein, etc. Thanks! -MM

This can't be dumping... but what is it?
aelovelady replied to wicked's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please don't feel bad. You have to live your life. I don't know why you fell asleep, and I am 8 months post op and have NEVER been told to avoid carbs, fats or anything else. I try to eat protein first, veg and fruit second and carbs third, but I eat WHATEVER I want, to include cookies, ice cream, cheesecake, etc. try to avoid eating outside your meal times and definitely avoid calories from liquids, but other than that you should be good! -
Long story... Anyone else been here?

I was sleeved on 1/10/2013. I am having an easy go at this. I am not saying to rub it in I was going to tell you what I eat and drink at this stage. I wake up and as I take my kido to school I start drinking the isopure punch protein 40g (like Gatorade) with equal ice to drink about 10oz. I drink that all and wait thirty minutes then I eat a scrambled egg and 3 slices of turkey meat 12g protein. This will sometimes take me an hour to eat. I eat it slow and chew chew. I want to get all the protein in. Thirty minutes later I start working on the rest (10 more oz) of the Isopure protein drink before lunch. Usually lunch is one string cheese and 3 slices of turkey meat 10g protein. If I have finished the protein drink then I start drinking on the vitamin water. I have what ever the family has for dinner. Tonight is three bean turkey chili. 11g protein. I am getting about 600 calories a day and 75 ish proteins a day. I take two Flintstone vitamins and two calcium 600mg a day too (not at the same time) I take b/12 injections about every two weeks. This really helped with energy. During all this I am walking as much as possible. I wear the fitbit tracker and that has helped to keep me moving. I am almost 6weeks and have lost 27 lbs. I hope this helps. I am not sure how I could get in 1000 calories. I do know that more protein and b/12 has helped my energy a lot. I also cannot drink cream shakes that is why I drink the Gatorade type drinks. -

I was also sleeved on the 9th. I work all day to get in 600 calories. I am not getting enough liquids in. I have to wait 60-90 minutes between eating and drinking so it's really hard to get them all in. After I got a vit B-12 shot, I felt so much better and now have a lot more energy. Good luck to you. -
has anyone tried sunkist they have 25 grams of protein in 3.9 0z no carbs/sugar and 100 calories they come in grape, orange and fruit punch. i found them on amazon.com, but had to get the nutritional info elsewhere.

How many calories are most people on here eating in an average day? I'm still new (2 months banded) and trying to figure out all the numbers.

:smile2:Thanks for all of the encouragment. I actually went to the surgeon on Monday and he said that he thought I needed a fill. I am the first of his patients to have a 10cc band and he didn't realize that I wasn't that full so he put in 2 more cc's. And let me tell you something I haven't even begun to feel restriction prior to that. I only thought I was restricted. I have lost 3 lbs since Monday. I am very happy about that. Also, I have begun my exercise routine's and started calorie counting. I appreciate all that have posted to this it hasn't been easy but knowing im not the only one hitting a platau is nice to know. THanks and I look forward to hearing from you all again..

As you are switching things up, could you consider writing down what you eat? I found one of the biggest keys to my success was faithfully documenting what I was eating, including quantitites (I also included calorie counts). By doing this I was forced to acknowlege not only what I was eating but how much. I found it way easier to make better eating choices when I became really aware of what I was actually doing. One of my biggest eating problems is "unconscious eating" - where I think of food and just reach for it - not stopping to see if I am actually hungry or if I could make a healthier choice. Keep your chin up and keep up the good work!!!

Any Curves members who have used the new Curves Smart equipment?
Michee replied to afw's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I am not familiar with curves equipment, but I do believe that eliptical machines always give a highly inflated calorie burn number. I wonder if the machine manufacturers want us to feel "good" with these fake numbers. -
Getting Banded April 16th, Any Tips or Advice?
jenhrvy20 replied to WishUponABand's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Steph! Don't be nervous at all. You will not remember a thing. It goes very smoothly and you will do great! The pain is bearable. Not fun, but a lil pain meds will do you just fine. I was actually just banded on 4/7/09. I have already lost 19 lbs. YAY! I take in about 800-1000 calories a day, but that is different for everyone I'm sure. I was directed to take in about 60g of protein a day. Take a good multivitamin and maybe a calcium supplement as well. Your doctor may have already told you this. I like the protein shakes called EAS: Advantage Chocolate Fudge. They taste good and they have 17g of protein with only 110 calories. I am so excited for you!!! I am still learning how to use my band. It is definately a learning process. Good luck and I wish you all the best  -
I hated the puréed phase. I felt the same way. Nothing puréed wanted to go or stay down. Turns out, my sleeve hates purée, to this day I can't do it and I'm 1yr out. I ate a lot of yogurt and vegetarian chili that I pulverized with my teeth during the purée stage to get calories in. You're not alone in this.

I was using them on my pre-op diet, and I found them quite satisfying. There is an Herbalife business right down the road from me, and they are like a smoothy bar, that's all they serve is the Protein shakes. They are around 250 calories each, and you get a shot of aloe vera juice and some green tea, all for 5 dollars! I honestly enjoyed them, and it was nice having someone else make your shake for you.. if you do have an Herbalife smoothy bar around you then try the Butterfinger smoothy. It's just like eating the real thing!

I am 19 days post surgery and I have not lost any weight. I am taking in between 600 and 800 calories per day. I really try to hit the 800 because I am feeling lots of hunger now. I believe I am making wise choices--protien shakes, since I am on mushies/soft I have had 1/2 a packet of cream of wheat for Breakfast, adding half a scoop of protien powder in it to boost the protien content. lunch is cottage cheese or a 4ounce smooth greek yogurt, for a snack I have a sf pudding cup or a motz cheese stick, dinner is usually a cup of pureed veggies with a scoop of plain or chicken flavored protien powder added to it, and maybe a few sf popsicles throughout the day as well as my Water. I am getting 64 ounces of water in between meals. I was losing steadily before surgery and I am feeling a bit like maybe I am doing something wrong? If you have any ideas toss them my way, please!

Mixed responses/directions.... Which is correct?

Our manual says 20-30 minutes. They want you to avoid "grazing" behavior, that is, even sleeved we can eat too many calories if we eat all day long. -
A good overview on eating and obesity
feedyoureye replied to Arts137's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I always suspected this: "When people eat controlled diets in laboratory studies, the percentage of calories from fat, Protein, and carbohydrate do not seem to matter for weight loss. In studies where people can freely choose what they eat, there may be some benefits to a higher protein, lower carbohydrate approach. For chronic disease prevention, though, the quality and food sources of these nutrients matters more than their relativequantity in the diet. And the latest research suggests that the same diet quality message applies for weight control." I think that must be why MFP works so well... even on days I eat junk (not that often any more) I write it down and usually do not see a gain on the scale... or the gain is short lived... probably salt/water weight related. I know people here who say that losing weight with low carb/high protein eating has leveled out....and others (like me) who never used low carb eating (but perhaps a little lower carb- being a vegetarian means eating some higher carbs) and had success in the long run. "Protein and WeightHigher protein diets seem to have some advantages for weight loss, though more so in short-term trials; in longer term studies, high-protein diets seem to perform equally well as other types of diets." Seems like a very balanced article. -
I am 5.5 weeks post op and still get extremely fatigued. I go to the gym and am fairly active all day, by 8pm i can barely move. It must be that we are burning more calories than we take in.
-
I second the medication aspect of things. Also, your body is going through some crazy changes and there will be an adjustment period. It could also be that your body is not getting enough calories in the day which is common the first couple weeks after surgery. You will find that as you get more and more active, you balance this fine line between the number of calories you burn in a day, and the number of calories you eat to fuel your body. There will be a deficit and it is just a delicate balance. I highly recommend a FitBit to wear. It will track the daily calories you burn through walking, exercising, and just functioning. You will also be able to record all the food you are eating in a day. Over time you will be able to observe your sweet spot of calories in verses calories out. You are definitely on the right track trying to get as much of your Protein in as you can. Also try to get your calories up to around 600 a day or so. This should help alleviate some of the light hotheadedness. If the symptoms continue or you begin getting really dizzy definitely consult your doctor immediately.

Sudden Food Intolerance
AvaFern replied to CSchulden's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you eating too quickly? The first 8-10 months after I had the sleeve I rarely puked and then ever since then my stomach has no tolerance for sugar, oil, milk, and periodically random things like chicken and crackers that it doesn't usually have an issue with. So, in my experience you can develop food intolerance, however I also notice that I get much sicker, much faster if I am not careful with how fast I eat. Every once in awhile I'll be in a hurry and choke down 1/4 of a chicken sandwich, or a few too many spoons of vegetables too fast and almost instantly I have to throw up. For foods that my stomach tolerates, the barfing is usually because I didn't chew enough or ate too fast. Also, now I am paranoid about getting sick in public places, so before I even start eating my stomach wants to barf because of stress more so than the actual food. So, my post wasn't a very organized response, but I would try consciously eating slower and chewing longer. If that doesn't work, then it may be a sensitivity. I am the opposite of you...I am fine with moist chicken, but fish makes me barf. This was another sensitivity that only developed months after the surgery had been over and fully healed. Also, you're not bulimic if you're barfing because you feel sick. I had a member of my family feel nosy and say she thought I was bulimic which was offensive because I literally see her maybe once a year and she knows nothing about me. I puke a few times a week- not because I'm trying to spare myself calories, but because I open my mouth and the food I just ate comes spewing right back out. As long as you're barfing because you feel sick, you're unlikely to be developing an eating disorder. The trick though is to know when you're physically sick and when you are psychologically making yourself sick, so if you are uncertain, perhaps ask your doctor what he thinks. -
Is anyone else experiencing this overwhelming fatigue? I am eating 400-500 calories per day, not quite getting all of my protein, am on soft foods, and getting enough sleep but I have zero energy. The very idea of exercising is laughable. By the time I do the minimum to care for my 3 kids, I have absolutely nothing left. How long will this go on? My house is a disaster and I am getting behind on everything. Any advice?

4 weeks post-op and sooooo fatigued
CrazyJaney replied to SuperNova's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 8.5 weeks out. I had horrible fatigue at 4 weeks. It's getting better. I didn't really start to exercise until 4-5 weeks because it was so profound. I am much stronger now but still have to take breaks when doing chores, etc. once your up to 700-800 calories, it gets better. I don't know if it'll ever get "normal" since I'm still so new, but it does get better. -
You are so right that doctors have so many different opinions. I asked my doctor the same questions and she said they DO NOT want you to be so tight you cannot eat certain foods, just in small quantities because those white foods elevate your blood surgars (high in starch and calories). I stick to green veges with chicken or seafood mostly for dinner but I did have a few ounces of beef pot roast with less than 1/2 cup roasted potatoes and carrots once night for dinner. The meat was so tender and moist from the crock pot that it wasn't a problem, I just couldn't eat very much of it and that was fine. My last fill took me to 6 cc in a 10 cc band and my appetite seems pretty well satisfied on small amounts of food. I think you just have to experiment and figure out what works for you. I questioned so many things about why I wasn't more uncomfortable or pbing or other things I hear here. Again, I think it is a difference of approach but I have lost 11 lbs each of the last 3 months so I guess I am there!

Need Help with Pre-op Diet
juliegeraci replied to badonkadonkbutt's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi LeeAnn, if you want to start eating like a bandster drop your calories to 800-1k a day. You will drop the weight fast. I bet you could lose that 15 lbs in 4-6 weeks easily. Good luck. Julie -
4 weeks out and feeling defeated
gastricsleever replied to gastricsleever's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey how are you doing?! My stall finally broke! I was stall for a good 2.5 weeks tho. I bumped up my calories, protein and water and it worked. Also, during that stall I did lose inches even though I didn't lose lbs.
