  1. I am on my puree foods step and I couldn't be happier!!! The 2-weeks of shakes were HELL for me! I just wanted to eat something! Of course the shakes made me full, but it didn't stop my cravings. I finally had my post-op appt yesterday... they said I could move on to the next step and I am so excited! I don't know how I made it through those 2-weeks of shakes, maybe I have more willpower than I thought. Anyways, I had some ricotta cheese and sauce last night and it tasted like heaven. When the dietitian told me my portion sizes would be 1/4 cup, I thought "YEAH RIGHT!" - but it actually filled me up! I even had some Greek yogurt yesterday and savored every spoonful. I am just so happy I can start to eat actual food and not dread my meal times. Or course I am still drinking shakes to get in Protein, but now I can add extra things to make it taste better. My personal favorite--chocolate shake with PB2 (powdered peanut butter), and 1/4 cup of banana--soooo damn good! I am so happy I went through with this procedure! I was having some doubts along the way, but nothing good ever comes easy, and this process is NOT easy! I know I am going to run into more obstacles along the way, but I'm heading in the right direction and just need to stay on track!

7th Day /ONE Week post op

ACK... my mouth is still on fire. I've had four doses of the prescrip stuff so hopefully it will be better by this afternoon. Back at work today and will probably leave this afternoon when I start to get tired. I can tell the swelling is starting to go down now cause I'm hungry more often. I had 3 ounces of chicken breast this a.m. then a 15 g protein shake around 9 and then a sf jello a few minutes ago. I forgot to bring my chicken to work so I'll do another drink I guess for lunch plus I brought some kefir probiotic yogurt smoothie stuff too. My mouth is so friggin' tender that just about anything I eat or drink hurts... i think I'm ssssin' my words too. Tongue feel swollen. Soreness is SLOWLY but surely diminishing each day. I feel like I've been in a wreck every a.m. when I wake up and try to get out of bed. I haven't had any ibuprophen yet today but may break down and take some here in a few minutes. Surgeon and other fellow bansdters say I should start feeling about normal around Friday. Considering I am one week to the day today from the operation I'm doing GREAT. Driving myself to work and everything.

2 weeks out, what is the pain???

I think I will try some Maalox or something...finally after 4 days of pain I can finally think of trying some mushies...I really didn't do any full liquids, nothing that sounded or tasted good to me, I've lived on Isopure and water! I'm hoping it was just eating a semi solid food and it freaked my stomach out. I can't imagine how 2 ounces of yogurt done that--but it hurt like *&^%! Now I'm just scared to eat anything, I'll be glad with my period is over and I can tell which pain is from which problem! Last night sleeping was awful, the past 4 days I've had to take 3-4 hot bathes and showers to relax my body, it is so tense from the pain. UGH! How did I manage to do so well for 11 days??! I was eating mashed potatos just fine and then BOOM--no no!

  7. I didn't feel any restriction at first with the small amounts of food either. Same with yogurt, which is sort of like a liquid - I don't get restriction with that 1/4 cup equals two ounces so that's not that much food, but my NUT had me on 1/4th cup to start for the first week or so and then gradually increasing to 1/2 cup. She doesn't want me to eat any more than 3/4 cup of food total at any meal. I would imagine, however, that once you graduate up to a larger quantity, maybe even at 1/2 cup of something (not liquid), you will feel the restriction. Believe me, you'll know it when you feel it. The foods you are eating are not very dense either so they will process better (at least for most people they do). I could probably eat a whole cup of cottage cheese, but I don't because of the carb content in that food, so I keep it at 1/2 cup which still gives me plenty of protein. I also eat it for a snack instead of with a meal. But that's just me. I believe that the first true restriction that I felt was with grilled tilapia. Even though it is soft, I tried to a fairly nice size piece and about 3/4 through, wham, I got this tightening in my stomach and I burped. For me burping is the signal that I am through. Everyone has their own way of knowing when they should finish by the change in their body. You'll figure this out as time goes on. I can tell you that the "one bite too many" feeling is not pleasant, so maybe you'll be fortunate and not have that happen. You are doing everything right by following the plan your doctor has you on at just over two weeks out, so don't worry if you're not feeling restriction yet. Good luck!
  8. Well I had surgery June 4th and I'm still on liquids. You are saying you hope you have not gone through all of this for nothing...Are you keeping track on myfitnesspal.com of how many calories and how much Protein, carbs & liquid you are getting in? Are you eating as much as you would before surgery? Have you lost anything at all? I imagine you have lost some weight, so any pounds lost is not a failure. It is up to you to not put the wrong food in your mouth still and by looking at what you are eating, you are doing what you are suppose to be doing. The sleeve is a tool. You are lucky you aren't feeling sick or restrictions by eating those foods. But you are mentioning 2 ounces of tuna. That's not a lot. A Greek Yogurt, again not a lot. If you ate a scrambled egg, a hardboiled egg 2 ounces of tuna and a greek yogurt, all at once, then you got some sort of issue there to worry about and then you should be worrying about the restriction issue. Eating one of these at a time without drinking for at least 1/2 hour afterwards, and you are doing great is wonderful. Take this time while you are just learning to eat to chew your food and maybe stop worrying about what restrictions you should be feeling. After being on the diet roller coaster for as long as you have been, you know what you should and shouldn't be eating, and you know how much is too much. Trust me, try eating 2 hardboiled eggs and cottage cheese and the restriction will hit you like a two ton heavy thing and you will realize the truth of the sleeve. (don't try to eat 2 hardboiled eggs at once..I was being facetious. I think you are doing well. I went from 330-128 and then gained it back. We both know what the issues is, we need to keep on moving....a lot and we need to up our protein, keep lower carbs and most of this is still mental. Try some positive thoughts and maybe someone else will have more advise for you. Good luck

    Do you eat breakfast?

Hi - I find that I wake up hungry so I always eat some sort of breakfast. (But I don't have to get up as early as you!) I will eat one of the following - premier Protein shake -oikos yogurt (15 grams of protein) + a tiny bit of high protein Go Lean crunch Cereal in it + a few strawberries or blueberries - 2 eggs and a bunch of veggies mixed in - leftover piece of chicken - if I want something that I can really chew that feels like breakfast food, I'll have some go lean crunch cereal + milk I do try and get at least 25 grams of protein in for breakfast. It keeps me full and not wanting to graze by 9 or 10am.

    SOMETHING NEW

After 3 days I was allowed to move from clear liquids to heavier liquids. Yes, I relied on shakes from time to time, yogurt, cream soups, etc. This was for 4 days, completing 1 full week. Then for week 2 I was allowed to move on to mushies. As far as "gas pains", there appears to be some confusion, or mix-ups. There are 2 different "gas pains", one of which is from the surgical procedure, the other indigestion. Gas-X will not help the surgical procedure type of trapped gas at all.

What Do U Mean By That?

Early on I thought I was having problems with dairy, but eventually I figured out that the very loose stools were due to the post-op antibiotics. It cleared up as soon as I finished taking the antibiotics, and started eating mushies and solids. I have not problems with dairy now (5+ months post-op), but I don't drink regular milk (only unsweetened almond milk, once in a while). cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. are all well tolerated (and loved!) Now my biggest challenge is eating too fast (I still haven't learned how to slow down enough!), and occasionally eating too much . Just ONE bite too much can send me into bad stomach pain and I have to lie down or walk around (no sitting, crunching my stomach together even more!). And I get the "slimies" where I have excess saliva production, have to swallow alot and wait for it to pass. Not fun! I also get hiccups when I'm full or slightly past full.

    Lactose can be your Enemy!

I was in a stall for about 3 weeks, then gained about 2 lbs in a week and I called my bari team in near hysterics! Very discouraged. I was feeling awful, with stomach upset, gas, bloating, lethargy. All that has gone away since I cut out dairy--which admittedly has been hard, b/c cheese (esp. cottage cheese) and yogurt had been a big part of my eating plan.

    Lactose can be your Enemy!

Oh yes...lactose can certainly have that effect. Which makes it inconvenient as heck b/c most pre-made shakes are heavy in lactose. Generally now I use protein powder (I like IsoPure, BioTrust and Purely Protein), and make my own shakes with either lactose free milk, oat milk or almond milk. Eggs don't bother me, (but I do know they bother some who are lactose intolerant). so I eat them a lot (egg beaters, because of the calories). When I did puree's, I actually ran chicken through the food processor with a little broth and it made a thick, high protein soup. It sounds gross but with a few spices it wasn't that bad I also had to give up cottage cheese and yogurt, although I did try almond milk based yogurt, but didn't care for it. Some people do like it though, so maybe it's worth a try for you. Peanut butter and almond butter are also a nice treat but the calories/fat can be a problem if you have too much, of course. Hope that helps a little. It's a challenge, for sure, but you got this! I've found that this whole process is full of ups and downs (and not just the weight either) but when I focus on the big picture and remember why I did this, it makes it all worthwhile!

    So Mad At Myself

And do you reallllllllly think you're the only one who ever cheated and ate something they should'nt have ?? No, most of us just dont tell on ourselves ! A week or 2 out of surgery i could'nt stand one more liquid, so i ate a couple of spoonfuls of tuna mixed with a little mayo. Heaven !!!! Nobodys perfect, we all probably did it, so dont beat yourself up over it. I love my sweets too, so i keep a couple of sf chocolate pudding cups , or TCBY frozen yogurt bars or weight watchers ice cream bars in the freezer for when i HAVE to have ice cream. Having a couple of emergency healthy treats in my house for when the cravings hit has been a big help. good luck !

    so many post op questions

Hi! I'm at day 19 post op and I was off pain meds by day 6. She shouldn't be in pain other than soreness from stomach incisions. I was told by my doctor only one flight of stairs to second floor was ok, once or twice a day. Yes, we need to walk to avoid blood clots, but other than walking, No exercise until after 6 weeks. I do not have a drain, so I cannot help you there. At that time, I ate cream of chicken, cream of asparagus, unjury chicken soup flavor (my fav). greek yogurts, strained oatmeal with almond milk. I use myfitnesspal.com which can also be accessed from a smart phone app. It counts all Protein for you when you add what you ate or you can scan the bar code on your food product and it automatically counts protein for you. My doctor said 60-80 grams a day. The easiest Protein shakes are Isopure 0carb 40grams of protein per bottle. You can buy at GNC. Or Premier Protein sold in cartons of individual drinks at Cosco. 30grams of Protein per shake. I hope this helps!! Liz
  18. Hi everyone, I just had a question that you guys may know the answer to. Or maybe someone is dealing with this too? I was sleeved 11/30. My surgery went great and I am losing weight well. However, on Monday I ate a piece of soft tofu and steamed broccoli. (I have been eating soft foods since week 3- per my Surgeons orders.) 10 minutes later, I had severe abdominal pain that radiated to my back. I vomited just a little and had to go to the ER. The pain went away after 40 minutes. Had a CT and labs done. Everything was normal. No gallstones, no leak, no elected liver enzymes. Potassium was a little low. The doctors just called it gastritis. I saw my surgeon the day after and he said it was very hard to get gastritis while taking nexium or any PPI. Got an ultrasound done which really didn't show anything. So since then, I've been eating fine (miso Soup, soft seafood, Protein shakes, yogurt, light cheese). Until today... I had 1 scrambled egg (which I usually eat). 10 minutes later, I had the same attack. Severe pain, nausea... No vomiting though. The pain went away within 15 minutes. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? My sleeve is great, no leak, healed staple line. Gallbladder is fine- no stones. And each time this happened, I did not overeat.

    51 down

2 cc wow, I had 1 cc and having to learn to eat slower and less. You be careful and remember to chew. I stuffed two Ritz crackers in my mouth last night and for 20 mins I paced and had that awful pain thinking I will never eat again because it hurt so much. But it went away just as fast as it came on. Now I am eating yogurt just to get my crushed pills down and it takes forever to get it down. I sound like the clogged drain with all the gurgling I am making everytime I take two baby spoon fulls. So be careful Amy, don't want you to have the pain I had last night. But I am down 42 lbs now from my heaviest weight. So this band thing does work. I had my fill last Thursday and never had a problem until last night, Monday. I was told the real restriction can come as far away as 2 weeks after the fill. Judy
  20. I haven't been the fastest loser but I would try to find things that make you feel your restriction better. For me steak or chicken over fish. Shrimp is good. I stay away from any carbs that don't make you feel very full. For me, if I feel hungry at the end of the day I eat half an apple and that texture makes me feel full and satisfied. I might be able eat 200 calories easily of fat free yogurt and still feel hungry later. There was a great post about how restriction works (pyloric valve) once but I couldn't find it. Most importantly don't let anyone on this board make you feel like you are failing. Everyone has a different experience. Good luck!
  21. Foods like yogurt are pretty slippery and soft, so you usually don't feel the restriction or satiety with them that you do with something more solid like meat or cheese, so it is quite normal that you can eat more yogurt than the nominal 2-3 ounces that is often stated. I could likewise go through a normal 5-6 oz yogurt serving at that time, though I usually just kept it to 4 oz as that was adequately satisfying for me, and provided enough protein for that particular meal/snack (though by that time I was also throwing in a few berries for added nutrition and variety.)

    Eatting Woes

How about sf pudding, sf jello, yogurt? Those are really easy on the tummy. Or go back to the very basics like broths and increase the consistency slowly. Hope you get your tummy working better soon.

    Should I Or Shouldn't I

If your struggling to get in your protein, then the last thing you should be worried about is eating a carb. Eat a Greek yogurt instead.

    sliders

Rycherchick congrats on losing 62 lbs!!!! WooHoo via the board - i was told about sliders, and warned about their "danger" i have (3) sliders popcorn Protein bars yogurt I am too successful with eating more than i should without feeling full - thus the word slider but.......... took me a while but i now................. eat all the above muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhh slower (like i'm supposed to anyways) the yogurt especially surprised me i would only have one yogurt for a meal or a snack - but i did eat it quicker than i should have now i'm taking a bite slowly, and stopping for a bit before eating more again, this is what i should have done from the beginning popcorn is getting better now too i "used" to have (2) two small bags of orville redenbocker (100 cal) on some nights it was so easy to eat more that you/i should thus the word slider now i might have one every few days - i'll hide the rest of the box from myself Protein Bars are my biggggg weakness I literally give the bars to my 6" DH (I'm 5"3) he puts them out of site on the highest shelf i ate them too quickly cuz i was afraid someone would come over to the house and steal them now i'll eat one over the course of a day (instead of "swallowing" them down at once) so my "slider" foods i have learned how to deal with them cuz i realllly do love to eat them continued success kathy
