  1. no info given on pre-op or post-op. but there is a paper given at the seminar the DON'TS are smoking, NSAIDs, carbonation, fluids with meals, fresh coconut, snacking and caffeine. AVOID FOR THE FIRST YEAR arepregnancy, alcohol, read meat, orange and apple juice, corn, raisins and gum. and the DOs are positive mindset, take responsibility, exercise, water/water, quality Protein, multi-Vitamins with minerals, Iron, b12, Calcium with magnesium & zinc, support group and follow up. the seminar lasted 1 1/2 hours. it began at 550pm. open questions started about 645, but you don't have to stay for that; your choice. the doctor did have a open floor to those who wanted to stay longer and speak with him. i thought that was awesome. i drink Pure Protein already made in a can. i tried buying from their website, but you can only buy at health food stores. i buy minds at trader joe's. with that said, the surgeon will most likely give you your diet info. remember everyone is different. ohhhhh, the doctor mentioned also that they try not to use banding too much and they prefer to use gastric bypass, but the decision is yours. the majority of the class raised their hand for the sleeve. also if there are teachers out there, get that paper work in because you are definitely first in line.
  2. go ahead get the medical packet from them and begin filling out the questionnaire. all you have to send now is the medical questionnaire, send copies of your lab work(print from kp.org), and the written true and false questions. my case manager says in week 10 the final labs and ekg will be ordered and also the gallbladder ultrasound will automatically be sent to Pacific Bariatric. if you already had your gallbladder removed, kaiser will send that information to PB. she says since i have been to the seminar, send everything i have for PB now and Kaiser will do the rest. she says PB will contact them letting them know I have been entered in their system and all paperwork has been rcvd. once kaiser send the final results of everything, PB will contact the patient for the one day consult which will consist of the seeing their Internest, psych and surgeon. after the consult, kaiser will be notified. kaiser will contact you and give you a referral/authorization number to call PB and set a surgery date. the only two times you go to san diego is to have your consult and to have surgery. at the seminar the surgeon mentioned that if you have surgery on a monday, you will have to go to san diego on friday to be prepped. so just keep that in mind if you don't want to be there the whole weekend. also there is ABSOLUTELY NO EATING for about a day and a half. you will be cleaning yourself out, lol.
  3. yes i am trying to deal with this 10% also. However, this is a problem I am dealing and working with. After the mtg last night, I begin to ask myself questions, so i called the nurse case manager for my options class. in answering my questions with the edema condition i have, she says don't worry about the 10% because it will show that I and my primary physician has been working with diuretics to get the Water off or to a level that I am not holding so much. she mentions that i need not worry about not having the surgery 'cause I will have it. but, everyone is different and i say with your own conditions, speak with your case manager for options and find out what you need. i know i am at a relief status now, because I was very worried about my edema and the slow weight loss.
  4. what can i say, a very good seminar with all info covered from a-z. i enjoyed it and received my packet to fill out and get the information mailed as soon as possible. if anyone has any questions or comments respond here or pm me. on top of that i lost another pound since monday.
  5. lol I thought the same. And I have never heard of Crown.
  6. When was the last date of your Options class? There will be those to say whatever hospital their procedure was completed at, will be the best hospital. And, yes there are many Kaisers all across to back East. I was born at Bellflower. It's not that Kaiser corrected PB (if there are actual statistics that mention this). To my understanding overall there were approximately 80 patients who recieved the lapband, either from Kaiser or another facility and Kaiser performed/corrected over something of 200 lapbands to sleeves. So, there were a lot of people being corrected by Kaiser than doing the actual sleeves. Although sleeves were done f0r the first time there too. Nonetheless, who is to say where the majority of those patients come from. I think if you go to PB website Gastric Bypass Surgery and Bariatric Surgery information - Pacific Bariatric you will find another statistic rather than put them (Crown also) down. PB has done over 10,000 plus, because this is what they specialize in. I want my surgery completed with PB, in that, I don't want to wait for Kaisers waiting list.
  7. pacific bariatric will be at the anaheim plaza hotel tomorrow at 5:30pm for those who are interested or just for info. they will give you the packet of everything you need to return to them to get a consult down in san diego and then a referral number to see the surgeon. I will be there with bells on (not really - just excited)
  8. Wow I am truly blessed. I do not have a co-pay ---only for outpatient, which is 10 bucks. Office visit is 10 also and prescriptions are 5. no lab fees and any special visits for referrals are 10, but depending on the procedure/visit. I also checked with member services regarding my insurance with Pacific Bariatric and I was told as long as it is a referral from my doctor all fees will be the same as if Kaiser completed the procedure.
  9. Thank you. Yeah, I agree. I want to be in there before their wait list back-up.
  10. down 6 now. i lost 2lbs this past week. after class tonight i am very optimistic about san diego. we went over the criteria and i will be their patient. kaiser needs to do something for their patients. i think if they get another bariatric surgery center going north, alot more people can have the surgery quicker.
  11. I agree. I can't wait. I took a diuretic last night and so ya know I was up all night. In two hours I will see what this scale says.
  12. good for u. surgery coming soon for ya.
  13. I weigh-in tomorrow, beginning the 7th week. I am do discouraged, because every week my weight fluctuates with the edema condition. But I will keep the faith and hopefully the surgeon will fully understand.
  14. Who will be attending the seminar this coming Thursday with Pacific Bariatric in Anaheim? I called to verify that my name was rcvd through their website. She said there will be a list and also each person will sign-in. They use the scheduling for a head count to be sure they have a enough materials for everyone. She also mentioned that the materials will give us all the information needed and to fax or mail in everything requested.
  15. I am attending the seminar next Thursday also. So exciting. My Options class ends Sept. 20 in Bellflower. Like many others, I decided on SD because I do not want to wait any longer than I have too.
  16. Wish I could be a sub for ya, but I live in the Long Beach area. I love bowling. I agree with everyone. Sit it out. After a while, try practicing during open bowling to see how you feel. I have a 17lb ball and I wouldn't try it. If its a Vegas league, try paying your dues and still have a sub to get the perks when you bowl in Vegas. Just a thought.
  17. yes, me too. Its ok with a fold-out bed. As long as I have my husband with me, that's comfortable with me. i'm so glad he's with me 100% on this. I know this hospital very well. My father had heart surgery there last November. He lives in Chula Vista and where I married my husband Jan., 09. We are always there - sometimes don't tell my dad we are there, unless we accidently run into one of my uncles or cousins (LOL). Nonetheless, the facility is nice. I seem to isolate myself too. my husband is very outgoing and his personality is awesome. So, being by his side helps me a lot and he says i have gotten 80% better from being so introverted.
  18. I, too, am enjoying every part of my class. But to be honest I'm glad its for 12 weeks. The classes are very informative and I live in my folder. I count everything I put in my mouth. There are a few co-workers that had the gastric bypass with Kaiser-their choice. I refuse that surgery years ago. however, now I believe this is the best one (sleeve) yet. Have you heard of the gastric plicative? I think it where the other half of the stomach is folded instead of stapled off. Good info on PB private room and guest and the amenities. All my husband needs now is a bar and a place with good food. He doesn't have a weight problem. Very solid and stocky at 5'11 and 220lbs. He exercises and lift weights 5 days a week. Well actually 7 because he walks with me on the weekends. I am glad that I found people on here from the L.A. area and with Kaiser I can relate to. Keep us posted on what's going on with you and I'll so the same. Have a great Sunday.
  19. Hello Fellow Kaiser members I am with Kaiser Bellflower and began the Options program June 21. I'm doing well as expected, accept for the edema that continues to haunt me. My classes are great. I've been reading the post and everything Kristy has mentioned is correct. I am also contemplating having surgery at Pacific Bariatric. However, it is easier to have the surgery with Kaiser because of all the extras with PB. But, Kristy, I am with you on not wanting to wait. Some may think what is the rush. Unless you're overweight, you will never understand. I walk everyday. Complete food logs and be sure to calculate my minutes in walking. It was mentioned in my class, that Pacific Bariatric is also turning patients away if you have gained any weight prior to surgery. Also, Kaiser Sunset is no longer a participant in this surgery. West L.A., Bellflower, HC are the only three facilities doing the procedure and the outside vendor. It was also mentioned that each facility has only 1 or 2 surgeons and the hiring of at least 2 per facilities is in process. So with this hopefully surgeries can be completed faster and after the 12 week course, it will not seem so long. By the way, my name is Kristie too.
  20. hello .. congrats and good luck to you
  21. BlaqBeary posted a topic in The Gals' Room
Hello all I am really concerned with my lower extremity edema-right leg/ankle is worse than left. I began Kaiser classes in June 21. The first week I lost 2lbs. Two weeks later I was back 315;the original weight. July 12 weigh-in was a 10lb lost. A week later was a 12lb gain, which puts me at 317. I weigh in again on Monday, so hopefully that digital scale won't fail me. Let me say with doing a food log every day and turning in all logs and weigh-ins, how many minutes I walk a day is wonderful, because it helps. the instructor looked over my food log and mentioned that everything looks good. just go to zero calorie sodas if I have to have one. and my weakness for Pita chips from FreshNEasy. But this darn edema is killing me on weigh-in dates. My doc prescribed Lasix and K-tabs and to drink tonic Water before bed to help with leg cramps. I walk everyday with my co-workers and with hubby on weekends. i feel totally lighter the way I walk and the feel of my clothes. These ankles had me literally crying in class last week. now I have to count on diuretics to help keep water weight off. Are there any members here who have or had this problem?
  22. is it a norm to have 60 grams of protein or did your doc/surgeon recommend this?
  23. This protein drink taste good to me. A little after taste, but doesn't linger on the tongue.
  24. The website is Worldwide Sport Nutrition I bought two cans today at Trader Joe's. There were other flavors as well. vanilla Cream The deliciously light and creamy flavor of Pure Protein Vanilla Cream Protein shake is almost too good to be true. With 35 grams of high quality protein and 0 grams trans fat, Pure Protein Vanilla Cream is nutrition on high. Just give it a taste and you?ll be? on cloud nine.
