  1. I noticed a thing on the wall that said....I don't remember the words, but in my words, it said that sliders (my word) and mushies are like liquid calories...a no no. So the other thing I've been doing is using sliders to get my food down. Maybe that did it. I'm not sure. But that was something what was a change for me so maybe that's it. I guess I'm going back to a shake in the morning, a salad at noon, and a meat a nd vege at night.... I think I must be fighting the stark reality that I need to struggle with each bite of solid dry food, no liquify it. I'm not sure. I'm just thinking out loud.

  3. LIVE AND LEARN---A STRETCHED POUCH 5 days ago, all of a sudden I felt like I could eat anything. i even tried a few bites of bread...and no problem. Odd, since until then I had felt like I was at a perfect fill. so I hiked on over to get a fill. She put in .2cc and we watched the barium just sit there....I was totally closed! So she took out the .2cc and I looked just perfect. So I couldn't figure out why I could eat more stuff. She looked at the fluoro and told me I have stretched my pouch!!!! Oh No!!! The ultimate diaster. Everything I have heard says that a stretched pouch negates the surgery!!! I was ready to cry! She looked at me like I was nuts. I felt nuts. I couldn't figure out what I did....except that about a week ago, I said goodbye to my protein shakes because I felt like I wanted to only get my calories from solid food...period. I must have compensated for the missing shake by eating more and stretched it out, and then when I went back to eating correctly, I just never felt full. So she calmly said to go on liquids for 2-3 days so the pouch would retrun to normal size. And I did. And it did! I am totally back on track! Live and learn. Next time I think I need a fill, I'm going to go on liquids for a day and see if that takes care of it. And I'm going to work hard to nurture my little pouch better! __________________

  5. Oh, PR... I'm so glad you got that figured out. sounds like you're on track again!
  6. Hmm. I must have presented it wrong. The way I read it is that the band provides physical portion control through a sense of fullness, and the diet and behavioral parts are the responsibility of the bandster. That the emotional part comes from the changes that happen because of the partneship of the physical band and the bandster. I didn't think I was reporting anything other than one person's perspective among many...something to think about.
  7. Seems like they ought to know when they hit it because they will pull out the saline that's in there and then put it and the new stuff back in! That way they know if you've lost any! Then, if you are leaking, they can put in Omnipack instead of saline. It's denser so it doesn't leak.

  9. The sweet spot actually differs for people. some people like alot of restriction and some just like to sense fullness. It's actually the spot where you live best as a bandster. For me, my first 2 fills didn't do it but my third fill did. I could eat breakfast at times, and at times I was too restricted for anything but a protein shake. For lunch and dinner I could eat the recommended 4-6 ounces of food. I didn't feel like snacking. Food just stopped holding an allure for me. Physically, I was forced to eat slowly or I was in trouble. when I was full, I felt a huge sense of fullness and satisfaction. It was a heaviness in my chest and throat. I was losing between 1-2 pounds a week regularly. I wasn't food-seeking.
  10. My hero! Actually, if you want to ease into it, get an exercise ball and do pushups over it. The farther back the ball is on your body, the harder the pushup.
  11. Nurseamy! I have been exactly where you are, and I'm down 30 pounds! Have heart. For most of us, there is no restriction until you get a fill and hit the sweet spot. Your job right now is to do everything you can to eat like a bandster....practice what you can, and forgive yourself for what you don't do. In essence, you are currently no different than before you were banded. It's a long process, a marathon and not a sprint. I had no restriction after surgery, after my first fill, or after my second fill. I learned. I studied. I practiced. I learned patience and to shed myself of self-blame. On my 3rd fill, I was actually finally living life as a bandster. Some people only need one fill to get to that restriction, but frankly, there is so much to learn, I've been grateful to have been easing into it. In the meantime, try spicing your food up with some Thai seasonings. I found that artificial sweeteners made me hungry and gave me gas. I liked hearty Soups and meaty things. I did a lot of blending or grinding ham and beef into hearty soups. I just wanted meat!!!!!
  12. Barbara-I think you're doing well to be focusing on incorprating exercise at the moment! Lana-I need to leave for my trip in a few days, and I'm nowhere near ready. Or rather I could be ready but I'm getting a 90 year old woman ready too! I'll have to miss the next one, but I'd like to go after next week.....
  13. It's interesting, isn't it? I truly believe 6 small meals is healthier. I also know that right now, I would never feel full that way with the band. I'm thinking maybe later that will be possible for me. And I also know I need to tackle my grazing issues, so 3 meals and no snacks resonates with me...for now. that's a good point that we have to keep adjusting as our bodies do. It's truly a long term education!
  14. Hi Lynn. I've hear and average of 1-2 pounds a week is right where we want to be...so the skin can catch up and so we don't go into starvation mode. For me it's in fits and starts....lose nothing, then lose a chunk,,,then nothing, but it averages out to be on target.
  15. The way I figure it, I'd much rather obsess about how to lose MORE than to just obsess about eating, like in the old days. Besides, I think the whole thing is just darned interesting. Speaking of bread...I tired so hard on high protein low carb diets, and actually felt better with them than with other kinds. Not being able to eat bread easily is a real plus as I see it, and not a disappointment at all. I'm happy about it. I guess I'm not surprised that bread came as a surprise to her. I found that I was frequently surprised at first, even though looking back, I had actually read stuff before. It's different once you step though the looking glass. The funniest one for me is that when I think I'm not losing and falling behind in my weight loss, I go back and average across all the weeks since my band, and I'm right on target. I'm usually surprised about that.
  16. Barbara-I want to congratulate you. I know the challenges you've had with fills, etc. And yet overall, you're averaging 1.3 pounds lost per week. You're right on target, my dear.
  17. Well, here's the other thing that keeps nagging at me. I hear so many research Drs. saying that the average loss with lap band over time is 50% of th excess weight. I want to beat the average. I don't want to be a perfectionist about it, but I'd like to do better than 50%.
  18. I can eat anything corn-based...tortillas, corn bread. But I'd rather not do carbs....
  19. Well, Lana, you know another thing that seems to be different is the amount of fill. Although they hadn't had much, one gal said she liked a hint of restriction and the other said she liked it REALLY tight. So if you wanted more restrictiona nd that's where you feel best, go for it! We're too late to be the gals who get NO fills! Ha! Odd to be quoting him, but Donald Trump's style of eating appeals to me. An extremely healthy "diet" at home, and then eat anything but with portion control when eating out. He also never drinks alcohol....not sure that appeals to me, but I haven't had a drink since I was banded and haven't even thought about it. I really need to hear ALL this stuff over and over. I learn bits at a time and don't retain the rest. I guess it's taking awhile to undo the bads of a lifetime.... I need to stop snacking. I know I'm OK now with it, but it's dangerous for me in the long run. AND stopping it will bring up my emotional issues, I guess, since it's the thing I keep hanging onto. I know it will bring up issues related to eating while bored. I used to live a very busy hectic life. Since I got Lupus, I have to be slower and I can't multitask, and I get bored and eat.
  20. Well, I definitely did not learn all of that without ever needing a fill. In fact, my first 2 fills seemed to do nothing. My third fill worked, and I began the learning curve of a bandster in earnest. I find that I am still a grazer, although in miniscule amounts. I really want to attack that behavior next...for me, it will be dangerous over time. I also don 't chew my food as well as I should, although I do it 10 times better than before. I think for me, these messages are good. I am not perfect and need reminders of where I'm headed. I thought I had all the concepts down before the surgery, but for me, it is an interesting journey of little "ahas", being kind to myself when I'm imperfect, and being open to learning...sometimes learning the same lesson over and over. I'm really quite satisfied with the band, but unlearning the lessons of a lifetime takes time. I am so happy for people who get it from day 1. I'm not one of them. On the plus side, I currently have the meal thing down well. I'm getting the exercise part. Now it's time to tackle the snacking. I suspect since that's the part I was hanging onto, that's the part that will bring up the emotional issues....although I think alot of it is just about eating when bored, and I get bored when I sit still. sigh. I also think that a bitg difference for me has been in eating quietly and mindfully, in a meditative way. It's different for everyone. Congrats on your surgery date, Terry. Let us know how it goes.
  21. Yeah. I want to improve wherever I can, but I can't complain about the weight loss so far...other than the normal impatience. I gotta quit snacking! I'm snacking on extremely low calorie foods, but I know I'm doing it out of habit and not hunger.....
  22. I just heard a radio show today with a lap band Dr. being interviewed. He said that the people who "get it" (meaning lose a lot and consistently) are the ones who use the band for one thing----to realize they don't feel hungry anymore. Consequently they limit themselves to 3 solid low fat ,high protein, high fiber meals with no snacking....and then spend their time dealing with the emotional issues of losing food as a companion. Period. That's his summary. He said that those people who "get it" from the beginning may not even need any fills. Everybody else has to learn it somewhere along the way. He said the Atkins diet works best, and said eating mushy foods (and sliders) is as bad as eating liquids: Food should have to be a big effort to chew chew chew until liquid. Period. "No fat person has ever chewed their food well enough...They couldn't and still get all those calories in in a meal." "One reason for the mushy diet at first is to get people used to chewing food well enough." What do you think?<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

  24. Oh, we are all so good at the self loathing thing related to food, ain't we? This time around, think of it as your body you are advocating for and don't hesitate to get those Drs. involved as your aprtners in this. (Or maybe some cheaper ones.....!!!!)
