marfar7 got a reaction from Kindle in Curiosity question on Diets after gastric sleeve
I've been in this mindset since my lapband in 2009 and more recently, 13 mths post op sleeve revision. I'm now 11 lbs from goal. Losing extremely slowly - I know I could speed things up by "dieting" or eating low-carb, but I'm done dieting. I will get there someday. For now, I'm happy in my size 8's - eating potatoes, bread, and an occasional (READ OCCASIONAL) cookie. If I never lose another lb, I'm happy with my loss.
While I totally understand those that watch calories and carbs, some people can't eat 1 cookie or they'll eat the whole pkg (my husband is one of them) - I can eat just 1 cookie. My blood sugar is perfect, my bp and cholesterol r good, and I'm happy eating whatever I want. I just eat MUCH, MUCH less of it. IE: I can eat 1/3 of an in and out cheeseburger, 1 Del Taco soft taco, 1 pc of thin crust pizza, 1 cookie.
I have found tho that now that I'm 13 mths out, I can eat a little more. Have to start watching my portion sizes in the future. Otherwise I guess I'll hafta cave in and diet. Someday. Not anytime soon tho!

marfar7 reacted to startingyoung in Life after surgery
Being only 19 years old and a month post op, I realize that there are a lot of things that I will not be able to do anymore.
Take shots on my 21st birthday, drink soda, enjoy a drink with my dinner, and others. Some of my friends that know were worried for me before the surgery because of these factors. And yes these are things I will not be able to do, but everything comes with a price. In my case, all the things that I gain from this surgery completely outweigh those that I am unable to do. I now can have more confidence in myself, have a smaller chance of developing heart problems, have a smaller chance of developing diabetes, be truly healthy for the first time since I was young, I can buy smaller clothes, I can buy clothes is sizes that don't have an X next to it, I can eventually wear a bathing suit comfortably, I can finally stop the excuses of why I haven't lost the weight, I can love my body, and I can stop feeling like I am wasting my "glory years" by being overweight. These are only a few of the things that I have and will gain from this surgery, and I could not be more content. For anyone who is on the fence about this surgery, yes there are disadvantages and life changes that need to be made, but it can also give you your life back. After years, I am finally going to love everything about myself, including my body.

I can eat an entire bucket of movie popcorn if I tried really hard. It's my biggest slider. I just recently bought an air popper (u'll never eat microwave popcorn again if u cut open an unpopped bag and saw what was inside - ick) and occasionally eat a couple cups with real butter. I'm within 15 lbs of my goal weight and have added back some of my fav foods, 1 being popcorn.

marfar7 got a reaction from VSGAnn2014 in What is your restriction like 1 year +?
I'm 13 mths out. While I can eat more than at say, 3 mths, I'm no way close to what I could eat pre wls (had the band in 2009 and sleeve revision last year). I don't measure my food. Never have. So the only way I can tell how much I can eat is by how many bites I'm able to take. At 3 mths, I could take about 8 bites of any given food. Now, at 13 mths, I'm able to eat about 15-20 bites. About 1/4 of a chicken boob, a few bites of potatoes, and a few bites of broccoli.
Where I find I have the biggest problem is late night snacking. After 8pm it's like I don't even have a sleeve. I can graze all nite. Been trying to curb this. Instead of popcorn, I will eat 1/2 an apple with almond butter. Instead of cheese Its I'll have a chunk of jack cheese
I'm definitely a work in progress. I'm about 15 lbs from goal and I know I'll eventually get there. The first 100 lbs are easy peasy compared to the last 20.
    Good luck!

My husband is very encouragine during this whole year that I've been sleeved. He's gained weight - probly from eating all my leftovers that I hand to him. He told me last month "quit offering me ur extra food. I'm getting fat!"
He uses Atkins to get back on board. I don't. I just eat smaller portions. I don't diet.

I've never heard of ANY surgery where they stand u up for the whole surgery. I know mine was lying on the table. I stood during my leak test the next day. Can't imagine how they keep u from flopping like a rag doll while under general anesthesia and standing. And how difficult it would be for the dr to operate on ur stomach while standing.
Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe someone can explain?

marfar7 got a reaction from BeagleLover in Wedding Dress Shopping
Wedding dresses r about 2 sizes bigger than u actually wear. When I got married 2 1/2 yrs ago, I was 144 and wearing a size 8 jeans. They measured me at a 4 on the bottom and a 16 on top (yes, I have a freaky body). So my dress was a 16. Thought I had gotten out of double digits.
So don't freak out when they measure u and it comes out bigger than what u actually wear. I think it's standard wedding dress sizes. Make sure they will alter it for u in the future cuz ur bound to lose some between Aug and Nov. Good luck and CONGRATS!

My mom was the same way when I told her I wanted the lapband in 2009. She said "why don't u just do it the old fashioned way?" Her husband late wife died 3 months after have RNY. Got a blood clot. So she thinks everyone dies from wls.
The first time I went out to eat with my mom I made the mistake of taking a sip of soda AFTER I ate a bite of food. Came right up. And of course my mom reminded me that woould have never happened had I done it the "right way"..
Now that I've lost 100 lbs and kept it off (sleeve revision last year) she's proud and agrees with my decision. Just wait. Ur mom will feel differently when she sees how wonderfully it affects ur life.

marfar7 got a reaction from Jerzeegurl0815 in Low BMI but want revision
Medicare will pay for the revision, no matter what your bmi is (mine is 28) if there are complications with your band. Your dr could say that you have a band intolerance, excessive vomiting both of which are true. Mine slipped (have had it for 3 1/2 yrs) and was totally unfilled last month. Waiting till all the inflammation to go down so I can have the revision all in 1 surgery. Like I said, my insurance covers it with complications, even with my bmi at 28. I only need to lose 30 lbs but I know I caould never keep off the 100 I've already lost without a tool.
    Good luck!

marfar7 got a reaction from Jerzeegurl0815 in Band to Sleeve with low BMI
Was revised 6 mths ago at 174. I've only lost down to 153. I'm not really trying to lose and the sleeve is allowing me to maintain fairly easily. I know if I kicked it up a notch and actually started trying to lose, I could get to my 135 goal (18 lbs). The last 20 r the hardest! The first 100 were easy peasy compared to the last 20.
So yes, my bmi was 28 at my revision. The nurses who didn't know I had a revision thought I was crazy for taking out 85% of my stomach while weighing 174.
Ur right. I would never have been able to keep the weight off without a new tool. I know myself too well.. Gained 30 lbs over the year my band was unfilled due to a slip.
    Good luck to u

marfar7 got a reaction from katonaboat in anyone REGRET the sleeve?
I have Medicare. The only requirements r the nutrition class, 1 visit to the nut, and a psych eval. Since I lived 3 hrs away, the dr set all 3 up for the same day for me. 2 weeks later, I was in surgery. Took 3 weeks from start to finish.
Do I wish I had a little more time to research? Absolutely. Would I have wanted to be on a "diet" for 6-12 mths to "prove" I could do it? Hell no. I'd already proven over 42 yrs that I couldn't do it. Why would I want another chance to fail? Had I done more research, I might not have chosen the band, however. The sleeve was never offered to me and the bypass seemed drastic. Wish the sleeve had been offered to me in 2009.

I did the same thing in 2009 with the lapband. I'd read a few things on the internet, made an appt with a dr and within 2 weeks I had completed my nutritionist and psych appts and was in surgery. Had no idea what I was getting myself into. Not sure why my insurance didn't require at least a time of consideration, but they moved quickly.
While I loved my band - until I didn't and I lost most of my excess weight with it, it finally ahd enuf of my destruction to it. I couldn't figure out how to eat slowly, making me vomit frequently. Causing a slip.
When I was facing a revision, I did alot of research on the RNY and the sleeve. I had gained 30 lbs in the year my band was unfilled after the slip so all I had to lose was 40 lbs (bmi was 28 at 174 lbs). I felt the RNY was a bit drastic for my purposes. But I knew if I just had the band removed without a revision, I would be back up to 250 soon.
So while I did virtually NO research on my first wls, I did tons of research for my sleeve. WHile I'm 13 months out I still have 15 lbs to goal. It's going very slowly now, very slowly. The first 100 lbs is easy peasy compared with the last 15.
But do I regret surgery? Never. Not the lapband or the sleeve. Comparing the 2 would be another whole post so I won't bore anyone with those details. Do ur research tho. U can't back pedal afterwards...
    Good luck!

marfar7 got a reaction from jessiquoi in Weigh in on weighing in...
I weigh everyday. Occasionally I'll forget but I usually weigh everyday to dial in what I need to do that day. If I'm toward the top of my acceptable range, I really watch it that day and a few days. If I'm on the lower end, I relax a little. I'm pretty happy at 150 (would luv to be 140) but I'm easily maintaining and having a blast shopping for my 6/8 jeans!
Do whatever works for u. Doesn't drive me crazy to weigh everyday, like it does som epeople. Keeps me accountable for that day. Like this morning, I weighed .5 lb from my top acceptable range. Instead of my 1/2 bagel with cream cheese or bacon and egg for bfast, I had 1/2 serving of plain oatmeal. I will have a salad with grilled chicken for lunch and I haven't figured out dinner yet. No wine tonite (as per my usual) till I've lost a few lbs. Can't afford the extra 110 calories in a glass of wine.

I also didn't worry about the sugars on the full liquid diet, since thats where most of my suagrs came from. At the time (I've since changed) I didn't care for Greek yogurt. So I ate Yoplait Lite (100 calories). Not even sure of the sugar content. I ate about 1 carton a day, broken into 3 meals.
Now a yr out, I can finish a 6 oz servings. I've since gotten hooked on Greek yogurt. My fav is Trader Joes NF Honey Greek yogurt.

I feel the same. These jeans can't possibly fit. But they do. With room to spare. I used to have red marks across my tummy from my too-tight 22's. Now there's no marks anywhere!
