Loved ur bowling alley story. Hubby and I are bowlers and it's actually where he proposed to me almost 3 yrs ago. I accidently took his turn and we were tied. He took that as his cue (knew it was coming at some point as we had just picked up my ring at the jewelers a few days before) and got down on one knee, right there at the score keeping board! Everyone clapped and the desk announced "She said yes!" over the loudspeaker.
Been married for 2 1/2 yrs now. Rarely bowl anymore. Just got boring to us I guess... Loved ur story! Congrats!

I'm an Army vet. When I joined (in 1996), I had to get a special waiver cuz I was 5 yrs post op gallbladder removal. They take any surgery (even if it doesn't affect ur health) very seriously. They don't want to be responsible for any issues arising in the future.
From what I know, wls is no-go in any of the branches. Not only becuz of the anatomy alteration issue, but becuz of the special dietary issues. They can't provide future dietary specificities and they don't want to be responsible for any problems that might come up becuz of it. Imagine urself in the field for 4 weeks eating MRE's. No special dispensation for ur dietary needs.
    Look at : http://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/pdf/r40_501.pdf
On page 5, ull see the remark:
    i. Other. History of any gastrointestinal procedure for the control of obesity does not meet the standard. Artificial openings, including, but not limited to ostomy (V44), do not meet the standard I think all the branches probly use the same physical requirements. The requirements are very strict. The Army makes u crab crawl in ur underwear to make sure u don't have flat feet. Picture about 30 women, all lined up in their panties and crab crawling across the floor while drs watch. I remember it well... Good luck in fighting it. The military is a tough fight for sure...If u have any questions, just ask...

About 50% of people lose hunger after the Ghrelin producing stomach is removed. However, Ghrelin is also made by the pancreas and the brain - and I guess my brain and pancreas work overtime to compensate for the removed stomach! I got my "real hunger" back on day 10. I could've eaten my arm by the time I ate soft foods at 4 weeks.
For the lucky ones who lose their hunger for a long period of time: IT'S JUST NOT FAIR!

I started dating 3 yrs after my husband of 19 yrs passed away and 9 mths post op lapband and down about 75 lbs. I met my share of "chubby chasers" - one who even asked me if I could have my "device" removed so I'd quit losing weight. I told those whom I had a meal with, not necessarily just coffee. Since I had moved 3,000 miles away (from VA to OR) to start over, I didn't know a soul so I went online. Spent $240 on a yr of Eharmony - didn't meet 1 person. Spent $135 for 6 mths of Match.com - had 2 lunch dates. Plenty of Fish was FREE and I had about 20 dates - and met my now husband.
Like I said, it took losing about 75 lbs (down to about 175) before I had the confidence to start dating again. U need confidence to date - especially when u haven't done it since age 18!
Good luck and have fun! Like I said, I was open about my experience with wls. Never heard an unkind comment. Most of the guys were impressed with my loss and very encouraging. It's up to u tho what u want to share...

Haven't been on BP in a long time. To embarrassed I guess. ^ mths ago I was 10 lbs from goal (140). This am I was 173. How did this happen? I know how it happened. I've been eating too much and too much crap.
I prided myself on losing more than 100 lbs on eating less but eating everything. Including pizza, tacos, burgers, fries, etc. I thought I was invincible. I couldn't gain weight if I tried. I hought I was bulletproof.
Then "IT" happened. The dreaded. I fell from grace. This morning I weighed 173. Wow. Never thought that would happen. For all of u that told me I would eventually regret "my way" of eating, u were right. I hang. Hanging my head in shame. I feel a huge amount of remorse. Now that I can eat more than in the beginning, I do.'
Please accept this post as my cry for help. I know what I need to do. It's just doing it. I refuse to buy new clothes and I have 2 pairs of jeans that fit (tightly however). Been wearing sweats and leggigs. And the backfat in my tops is ridiculous. Today is the day. Making a list to go shopping later. Already have chicken, fish, hamburger, tri tip, and steaks. .Need to buy some veggies, cheese, lunchmeat, avocados, Peanut Butter, almond butter (my fav snack is green apples and almond butter), eggs, , and dark chocolate.< /p>
I will post on MFP. I will drink lots of Water. I will eat more Protein than usual. I will keep my carbs lower (not low carb but lower than usual). I will not graze while watching tv (which is my biggest downfall).
Any other tips from those who have walked this same path? I know there's some of u out there. Maybe we can do this this together? Let me know if u want to do this together (share stories, share goals, keep each other accountable?)
I WILL post my goal weight soon. My 30th high school reunion is in July. My goal is 20 lbs by August. 4 lbs a month is doable. How bout it?

Now that I'm 20 mths post op, nothing but sorbitol (read:sugar alcohols) messes with my stomach. In the beginning, I found more than 2 bites of ice cream (and yes, I'm hard headed. Took a few tests to come to that conclusion) and I was writhing in pain. Now, unfortunately, I can eat a small scoop.
But the low calorie/low carb coffee frappe at my fav coffee shop has me in the bathroom, feeling like I want to die. I KNOW it must have sorbitol. Same with Atkins bars. I'm not an Atkins fan but hubby is and there's always bars hanging around. Occasionally I'll eat 1. Just 1 and I'm ok. If i try more than 1 bite of 1, I pay for it for about 4 hrs. I guess it keeps the Constipation away!
Haven't found anything else that hurts my stomach. I do know what my sliders are: popcorn, chips, crackers, yogurt, and sometimes, Cookies. Depends what kind they r. Can't eat more than 1 homemade cookie but I can eat 5 Girl Scout Samoas. And popcorn; I can eat my weight in.
Hope ur feeling better and take my advice: Don't push ur tummy. U will regret it eventually if u learn that ice cream doesnt hurt! Wish I still thought it hurt me! Instead I pushed the envelope till it no longer hurt. Now i regret it!
    Take care!

marfar7 got a reaction from Dmilder in 14 CC Band vs Restriction
I had my 14cc band placed Oct 1, 2009 - and I really didn't see any significant weight loss for the first 4 mths. It took until my 3rd fill (and my doc only does them every 6 wks and he's also 3 hrs away) and 8.5 cc to get any restriction at all. I had my 5th fill almost 6 wks ago, for a total of 9.5 cc in my band - and I think I'm finally at my sweet spot. I've only lost 50 lbs in the last 9 mths, but most of that has been since Feb, when I finally got some restriction.
Good luck to you. And remember, each band is so personal, it doesn't matter how much I have in mine, what counts is how you feel.

marfar7 got a reaction from Newme4113 in For those of u who have criticized my "way" of doing the sleeve...
You were right. For the last 16 mths since my sleeve revision, I've belonged to the school of thought that I can eat whatever I want, just much less of it. 6 months ago I was 5 lbs from goal. I've now gained almost 20 lbs eating whatever I want. Since I can eat much more now, that way of thought doesn't work anymore.
It was a nice thought, however...
Just got back from vacation (3 weeks out of state) and I gained 3 lbs. Eating out, drinking local micro brewed beer, and not exercising. While I'm relieved that I only gained 3 lbs, hardly any of my clothes fit. My jeans r way tight.
Went grocery shopping yesterday. Not 1 article of junk food went into my cart (cept a couple of Lean Cuisines). Starting last nite, no more nightly glass of wine. In itself it wasn't bad (110 cals) but afterwards I think it's a fantastic idea to cook a frozen pizza or corndog. I snacked on 1/2 apple with almond butter last nite. I ate a home cooked, real food meal last nite. I'm not doing a particular diet (such as low carb, low calorie, etc) I'm just going to cut the snacking mindlessly while watching tv at nite. Thats where about 50% of my calories come from. From now on it will be chamomile tea ( i find that I hafta sip on something while watching tv) a pc of fruit or a veggie with Protein. I will consume more Water and I go back to the gym tomorrow. My dog will actually be walked everyday. I will attempt to eat real food (cept the occasional Lean Cuisine pizza) and drink no beer (not really a soda fan and I only drink maybe 1/2 a beer. I drink it so slow that it gets warm and I toss it).
I might even do the dastardly deed of counting calories...and keeping track of what I eat. Guess it can't hurt.
So all of u who said my way of thinking would make my world come crashing down, u were right. I'm bowing down in shame to u...
And for all the newbies out there who follow the same school of thought that u can eat anything just in small quantities - u r incorrect. U'd better come up with a better plan before u eventually fail. Cuz u will...

marfar7 got a reaction from *Lexie* in Do u ever wonder how people here eat such a perfect diet - all the time?
Seems like about 75% of people who post here are perfect. They eat 60gms of Protein, veggies and barely any carbs at all. They drink the allotment of Water, they exercise 60 mins a day 6x a week. They never, ever eat pizza, burgers, sandwiches, or tacos. All they eat is grilled fish, grilled chicken, and maybe an occasional steak (when they're being BAD).
They count all carbs, calories, and fat grams. They measure and weight everything. chocolate shall never pass their lips. They comment on the reason that ur in a stall is becuz ur not being "perfect" and counting everything. Maybe u ate 4 oz of fish when u should have only had 3 oz.
If everyone here is so perfect and no one ever eats "junk", then why did they need wls in the first place? If they were so proficient in weighing, measuring, and counting, why have major surgery to limit their amount of intake? They judge those who eat an occasional piece of pizza, saying they will always be fat if they continue on the path of gluttony.
I have now lost almost 100 lbs, wth 11 to go to goal. I have not counted, measured, or weighed anything. I use my over $20,000 tool to guide my eating, telling me when I've had enuf. I've heard that I will never be able to keep it off, eating whatever I want, not "dieting" forever. I had wls so I'd never have to diet again. I wouldn't have had major surgery if I wanted to continue dieting. Now don't get me wrong. I don't eat unlimted amounts of burgers, tacos, pizza, and Cookies. I eat very little. The beauty of the point of my $20,000 tool.
So those of u who eat perfectly, exercise all the time, and have all the answers: kudos to u. A lot of work and ucomfortableness to not use ur pricey tool. I write this while eating 6 (yes, 6 WHOLE eggs) white chocolate Cadbury mini eggs. Gasp. If I do (occasionally) count my calories it's always under 1,000. I mean how many calories can u eat by listening to ur egg size tummy?
Now, if someday I start gaining because of my "irresponsibility" then I may start counting calories or weighing my food. But until then, I think I will trust my tiny tummy to tell me when I've had enuf.
Anyone else tired of perfect people?

marfar7 got a reaction from *Lexie* in Do u ever wonder how people here eat such a perfect diet - all the time?
I started out the festivities by downing a glass of egg nog (with rum). Thats pretty much filled me so when dinner came, I ate about 2 bites of each thing (tradiional faire) and was able to push my plate away. No pie. Not cuz I'm not "allowed" but becuz I was too full.
My 2nd sleeved Thanksgiving/5th since WLS (banded in 2009) and I did well. About 16 lbs to goal. I know I won't get there during the next month (holidays) but will eventually get there. And I'm happy eating less of everything and losing slower than restricting myself.
Brought home a whole pumpkin pie (went to my SIL's for dinner) and it whispers to me everytime I open the frig. I will probly have a few bites tonite. After my healthy dinner of course.
All in all, I had a great day. If laughing burned enuf calories, I probly lost tons of weight yesterday. My nephew brought 2 of his fellow USC student friends (who had nowhere to go for Tgiving) and they cracked us up. Nothing like youth to make ur day. My 90 yr old FIL got a little drunk, couldn't even stay awake during dinner. I passed up the wine for dinner (cux I had egg nog + I was driving home) so I was proud of that. ME passing up wine? Rare...
