Has anyone taken up Bycyling?
Yeah BG, it does look sweet, huh? I really need to figure out what my body needs as far as hydration and nutrition for something like that, though, or I will bomb. I also need to get a full road bike and not use my hybrid. Being in Texas, it is certainly named appropriately to be held in August! It's a good thing we are cooling off now for me to start training for it. My sis is gearing up for a half marathon in January right now, so she will cheer me on...she cycles, as well as runs. (She had gastric bypass in 2005.) I guess they will fly out for him to ride in the endurance ride with me. (They live in SC.) My BIL's Dad wants to do it now, too! We'll see how it goes! Those preserves sound scrumptious! I'll have to look for something like that here!

Has anyone taken up Bycyling?
B - HA! I forgot about that cult stuff...you're right! Maybe that's why I get the same heeby-jeebies out there at night! We WERE gullible, huh? But is has stuck with us all this time because it IS creepy out there in the river bottoms. And the last time I went down there at night, I ran across a couple of bobcats, and there are always big 'ole wild pigs running around, even close to the housing divisions. They are getting braver and braver! You bet on the ride...just let me know! EVERYONE - Hey, I know this is a lofty goal, but my BIL just challenged me an hour ago to the Hotter N Hell 100 for 2008. He knows I don't challenge well and would accept! LOL I'm way too competitive...I will agree to it and kill myself to get to the finish line just to prove to myself that I can do it! Now I'm really intrigued....does anyone here have any personal knowledge of the ride? The website has great info, but I was just wondering if anyone here is cycling that hard. I think I could do 60 miles without much problem, but I'm worried about hitting the wall after that. Any training ideas would be most appreciated!

I live in Lavon, now. It's at the north east corner of lake ray hubbard and south east corner of lake lavon. Our land is adjacent to the Corps of Engineers land around lake ray hubbard, which is nice. I'm in Hurst quite a bit to see my parents and grandparents (they live about half-way between you and the surgical center off precinct). We're starting to look into moving back to Boston soon, though. I just need to find a job that pays well enough to cover increased cost of living and Mass state income tax. Did you grow up in the area? I went to Ft. Worth Christian and graduated in 1986. Hey Gang - I'm off to ride the real bike on the road!!! Haven't been able to ride since a few weeks before surgery! I'm so excited! Will report back in this afternoon - I'm 40 pounds lighter than the last time I rode. B How funny! Yes, you have it right...right down the street is where everyone used to hang out behind Bell Helicopter on Friday and Saturday nights and drag race. Do you remember that? Of course now there are NO PARKING signs every ten feet. Yes, I grew up here. I graduated from L.D. Bell in 85. Now my youngest is going there...am I THAT OLD?!?!? LOL That's a nice area where you are now. Why in the WORLD would you ever want to leave TEXAS?!?!? We are retired Navy...we lived all over the friggin' country and couldn't get back here fast enough! I do love the climate in Boston, though, for sure. We are thinking about moving out to Possum Kingdom Lake. With our jobs we can live anywhere, so it will be up to the kiddos, really. (At least for a FEW more years...then we are gone regardless! LOL) Enjoy your "real" bike ride today! I think I'll do the same! I ride at River Legacy Park...right on that back way to Arlington you used to take!

If you watch the Walmart ads, sometime right before Christmas, they have a PHENOMENAL sale on them. (Or at least have had the last couple years.) I don't like the few they stock on an everyday basis at all, but the ones they got in for the special were great. We picked up two last year for the kids that are Compaq, CD/DVD player AND BURNER and they were under $400 each! It was a midnight madness sale, which I thought was going to really be a nuthouse (which I hate), but it wasn't bad at all. And they lie when they list how limited they are...they had plenty for everyone. They also limit it to one per person, so I took my Mom with me, but they let folks buy more, just on separate transactions.

Hey, everybody! Just wanted to check in and see what you all were up to! Hubby is in town for just one day, so I'm out of pocket, but wanted to say HI! JC, sounds like a realy awesome bike. Glad you are enjoying it! BG, sarcasm is is on "ultra low" today...you feeling all right? LOL HP, I'm curious..is the "poms" part of your name to do with mutts? All, see y'all tomorrow...stay out of trouble between now and then! (AS IF!) TX

Congrats on the new bike! What kind did you get? I hear you on the ass massage. The padded bike shorts help a lot, but sure don't cure all of it. Hey, how do you handle the hands going numb? I got some gel gloves, but they don't seem to help much. I always have to repeatedly raise my arms up and back to get the blood flowing again after about ten miles. Stef

Thank you...that will help me keep everyone straight, I hope! So who is "S"? I hear you about the running. I'm going to give the couch plan a whirl and see how it goes...I may need to wait until I've lost a little more due to my knee. Thanks for saying I fit in! (I think? :speechles LOL)

Has anyone taken up Bycyling?
JULI (are you "J"?) - You were running three miles in 10 weeks after starting from scratch? Or had you ever been able to run? I think that's amazing! I have never been able to run, and can't believe I am considering it now! Plus, I feel a little "funny" about running at my size. I know I'll push through that, though...whenever I've felt or been told that there is something I couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't do, that is all the motivation I need to DO IT! (Just a TAD stubborn, you know!) I'm a little worried about my knees. The left tends to "grind". My BIL runs marathons and swears it isn't what people say...that if you run properly, it won't hurt you. Have you experienced any joint issues with running?

Has anyone taken up Bycyling?
Okay, I like to think of myself as smarter than your average bag of rocks...but that Cool Running site is a mite complicated! I guess I just need to explore all that is there to get the navigation down. I got the weekly plan, which I'm sure is all I need, but there are a lot of tools there, too, and I'm a fanatic for tracking/accountability. (You should see my budget spreadsheet and weight log/food diary!)

Those shirts are great! I messed with Texas, and now I have a rash. ~ I always wear protection when I get all up in Texas. I suggest you do the same. That state is a ho.

Well, not mountain biking, if that's what you mean. (Jeez, do I feel dumb!) I ride at River Legacy Park near my home. It has paved, shaded trails just for walking/running/biking...no car traffic to deal with. The full trail, which can be broken up into sections, is about 15 miles and I do it twice, three days a week. I ride a Schwinn hybrid bike, but I really need to bite the bullet and buy a higher end bike, because your "every day" bikes are too short for my 36" legs! It is doing well for now, though. I don't ride with a group, but would love to! I can't seem to locate one, and everyone I know is not interested in taking up cycling. Even hubby is really not interested when he is home. He works offshore, so he is a sporadic biking partner, at best. Anyone here live in the Mid Cities/Arlington/Ft. Worth area? P.S. Everyone...the reason I was attracted to this thread? English is my second language...Sarcasm is my first!

Thank you for the welcome! If you don't have a "STEF", that would be fine for me. I was banded June 8, 2007 and have had four fills for 5.1 CC's in a 10 CC Small AP band. I started cycling in July...first time on a bike in over 20 years! I'm a Texas girl, married to my HS sweetheart...I'm 40 and we met when we were 15. We have two kiddos...our daughter in college at 18 and our son in HS at 15. I will be reading some to catch up, for sure!
