Angelina1210 got a reaction from Weewee70 in Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
Hi! I am scheduled for my bariatric sleeve on December 10th. I will be traveling to Mexico because my insurance does not cover weight loss surgery. I’m nervous and excited too. I’m so sick of the up and downs and I’m looking forward to stability, being healthy and looking and feeling good. I provided the clinic with my information and based on the information they suggested the sleeve.

Like everyone else I'm going to say its a tool, not a quick fix. With that I found I had the most success PRE SURGERY losing weight by logging everything. You may think you are staying in the guidelines but you will see that you're actually not. There are tons of food tracking apps. It takes repetition to get in the habit but you will see as I did that those days you skip it, you went off plan. EVERYTIME. Whether conscious or unconscious sabotage comes from within. Stop. Close your eyes. Deep breath. You have to SLOW everything down in the beginning to one meal at a time. You can't think months down the road. Stop weighing yourself everyday,, two to three times per day.. this process...It's day to day, min to min. It's a total process. You have to take an HONEST raw look at your habits and the reasons why you eat.
Don't be hard on yourself. You've given yourself a wonderful tool to become healthier.

You should be on more than 800 cals a day by now, maybe you arent eating enough or the wrong foods, i stalled for a good 8 weeks. I started eating a bit more and the scales started moving. Could also be your body rebuilding any muscle you might have lost in the early days after surgery. Eating to little will cause your body to hang on to every bit it can

Angelina1210 reacted to Sunnyway in Apparently I don't know how to eat soup....?
Don't overthink this. Soup is the meal. Just spoon it up normally. There is no prohibition from swallowing your soup any more than there would be for swallowing your Protein Shakes.

So liquid diet... I'm down 25lbs since starting it two weeks ago. I was 288lbs at my pre-op bloodwork visit and 263 today. This means I still have about 100lbs to get to a "normal" BMI.
I switched to Fairlife Protein Shakes because I hated the Premier but my doctor wanted me to switch back. He says he has much better results with liver shrinking and Premier.
Anyway - TOMORROW is surgery day! Covid test, packing bag... I'm getting ready!

Thanks. It's surreal sometimes to realize that I have lost over 200 pounds. Two hundred pounds! And yet I still feel like the same old Big Sue a lot of the time. TBH, I've been struggling a lot in many aspects of my life, so I'm not in a great place to be offering encouraging words to other WLS patients right now. I do still look at new posts, though, and I have to admire you for sticking around after all these years to educate newbies on things like the three week stall.

Have a chat with your team. The no alcohol advice tends to be for two reasons: one the calories & poor nutritional value (& no it doesn’t count as a Fluid 😉). Two, the more important consideration for many is the addictive nature of alcohol. If you are someone who has a food addiction, post surgery you can’t satisfy that addiction so you turn to something else & alcohol is usually the first place people go.
At about 6 weeks out I nursed a gin & tonic for hours. It was my cousin’s 40. I think I had another g&t at about 4 months, then 6 (girls weekend & at goal) then 7 months (Christmas - though was champagne). Same story sipped for hours. The tonic would be super flat & I could tolerate the bitterness. I still usually only have a glass of something about once a month or so, occasionally more often depending on what’s happening (special events) but am happy with just one glass. I used to drink one or two glasses of wine, gin or whisky every night. Don’t miss it. I go for quality now not quantity.

I have had some of the same thoughts as you are having. I have to say you are not correct. I could not eat more than I do at meals because I reach a restriction. Surgery gave me that restriction and I slow my eating and stop eating based on the restriction. If you are eating a lot of fatty or carb loaded foods between meals in smaller amounts you will not reach the restriction during those Snacks and will defeat the purpose. This is not only a physical challenge but a mental challenge so you seems to need help on the mental side of it. I think you need to consider counselling to help with that side of it. Finally....I track everything....everything...if you don't then you would be floored when you find out what you are eating and not tracking.

I had the surgery gastric sleeve a few months ago. My weight has stalled at 45-50 lbs lost. I understand your frustration. I have a issue getting all the Protein. When I do consistently get all the protein 60grams a day thats when I start losing. Maybe that can help you too. I don’t lose weight when I am not getting the protein.

That's all great advice. I agree 100%. All of the advice given would work without having surgery. That's all I'm saying. If you want to lose weight it's all down to diet and exercise. With or without surgery.... So my advise to anyone considering the surgery is don't do it. All you have to do is work hard, follow a plan and don't give up. It's your choice.
    Good luck with that.

Exactly, the surgery is bullshit. It's a total gamble.... I would never recommend someone have two thirds of a healthy organ removed from their body because it MIGHT help them develop a habit.

@goodmanje, if you're just wanting to vent because you're angry and upset, that's fine. We've all been there at some time or other in our lives. But if you are interested in help with troubleshooting what's going on, you'll have to engage with us and provide more specific information. Like post an example of what you eat on an average day. And you have to be willing to change - for instance, you can't just say "I'm not a disciplined person". Losing weight requires discipline with or without surgery. There are lots of food tracking apps out there and you may not be able to figure this out without making use of one of them.

To those with encouraging words I appreciate it. Those of you who are sitting on your high horse saying “all you have to do is put in the work” can check their ego. Why didn’t you put in the work instead of having surgery? Because you were just as much a lazy slob as me. Nobody who has had this procedure should be judgemental but we’ve got some on here talking like they are Olympic athletes or something. I have been following the advise of my physician. I don’t write everything down but I’m only eating low calorie food. I never drink anything with calories, never eat out…. I don’t even eat what the rest of my family has for meals. I’ve always got my own food to eat. And I’m not losing weight…… like I said, I don’t know what else to do.

Everyone has covered the mental aspects, so I won't repeat. But I'm curious...
    1. Do you feel restriction when you eat? At six weeks out, it should be very apparent. What happens if you overeat?
    2. What kind of food are you eating? Are you following an eating plan? Or just eating whatever?
    3. Do you eat meals? Graze? Both? What is your style of eating?
    4. Are you hungry all the time? Or do you eat out of boredom, as a coping mechanism, etc?
The folks on this site are super-knowlegeable and might be able to help you figure out what's going on if you provide more information.

My surgery date is Dec 3rd. It's soooo close. liquid diet for 2 weeks. Not loving it. I'm having the sleeve + single switch + hiatal hernia repair. EEEEEK.
I should be an old hand at surgery these days.
A loooooong time ago - I lost 380lbs w/diet and exercise. I was staying steady at 140-150lbs. So I had a Tummy Tuck & arm flap removal (Brachioplasty). Then I started yo-yo'ing and then I lost my Mom to covid last December. I've gained soooo much since then.
My Mom was in the hospital - just days before we lost her - submitting my info to Blossom Bariatrics in Vegas for gastric sleeve. She wanted me to do this because she knew I was happier and healthier when I was thin. So here I am. Because she was right.
I've also had my gallbladder removed, my right hip was replaced 4 years ago. My left hip was replaced 2 years ago.
So I shouldn't be worried about this. But, eeeeeek. I'm not a fan of needles, etc.
I just hope I can be discharged from the hospital in one day. Also, I'm in Raleigh, NC.
  24. Congrats!

only about 5% of people are able to lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off. Unfortunately, I was not one of the 5%. I always gained back every pound of it. Surgery is the only thing that ever worked for me.
