HELP! Pre-op, Almost at Finish Line... Thoughts of Bailing
I’m three months post op and feel absolutely great now. You will feel so much better too after your body heals. Likely you will surprise yourself each day with another activity you couldn’t do before. Like doing a lunge in yoga or walking up the stairs without getting winded. Focus on your goals. I kept in mind that during the actual surgery I was going to be asleep. I wasn’t in charge of doing the actual surgery. It’s silly but it calmed me down. All I had to do was go to sleep and wake up, and I did. I was still me and felt like me afterward too. You will too. I also use a piece of jewelry as an anchor to remind myself to keep my focus on weight loss and self care. (WW idea) I have a ring. I couldn’t wear jewelry into the hospital but tapped my finger to remind myself of self care when I got scared. My old WW leader had a charm bracelet from her MIL who had died from diabetes complications. I still use my ring to refocus after missteps like Halloween candy lol.

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?
This post really made me think about my relationship with food and drink again. I’m three months out with my bypass tool. I did graze one weekend on Greek style pizza and wine. I really enjoyed the company, could enjoy the wine with only two ounces. I did pack away 4 slices over 2 hours though. I had to really work hard a solid week to get back to my weight before that gathering. Looking back, the free laughter outside with friends was what I enjoyed. It felt like the openness pre-Covid. Keeping the feelings and why needs to be in front all the time. I am reminded that surgery is just a tool. Being social with friends safely is precious, and my physical health doesn’t need to take a toll. I’m going to track on an online app next time and plan ahead better. But you won’t have to stop socializing either, because I equate socializing with positive mental health. Like me you will have to evaluate your food and drink pitfalls and navigate through your strengths and weaknesses. For me, each gathering, each person, each situation is different. I have go into the next one with a better plan, but I promise I will still enjoy the socializing!

What foods have you broken up with?
Pre-surgery I loved eating eggs every morning for breakfast. I would put leftover veggies in and Cabot Hill 50% lite cheese. After surgery I can’t tolerate them. The dietitian suggested trying them at the 6th month mark. Smelling chicken other people are cooking makes my stomach cramp too, but pork and steak are back on the menu, venison too.

My mammogram didn’t hurt??
I have such loose flabby breasts now, so I smooshed to really flat pancakes. I’m not super sensitive so the feeling was the same, just deflated.

post op day 1
Congratulations on your journey to a healthier life. I had terrible asthma due to my long surgery and anesthesia (6hrs). I had to go back to the ER after going home because it was getting worse and couldn’t use steroids (slows healing). Then the team was worried it was a blood clot. Eventually the WL team realized it truly was asthma due to anesthesia and gave me a shot of vitamin A and a half dose shot of steroids. If you still have a harder time breathing, say something while still in the hospital. Ask about vitamin A. Truly best wishes to you on your journey!

Your favorite exercises?
I like to bike and walk. I love lifting weights but noticed my weight comes off faster when I’m doing something aerobic. Lately I’ve gotten back into yoga.

Support Buddies
If you graze eat constantly the weight comes back with RNY. It’s still work and keeping good habits that makes you loose or maintain weight with RNY.

Cramping with almost every sip!
I had bypass with hiatal hernia repair. That same spot hurt for the longest time. The doc said that’s where they moved around so much to correct the hernia and muscle is cut there. I had terrible cramping too. It’s normal and will eventually go away. Like others said, keep up the water. I still like LF warm chicken bone broth for something soothing and liquid.

3weeks post op feeling like I am failing Help!!
I would apply for insurance in the market place online. This is so unfortunate. At six weeks I was eating ground meats (and like one green bean if I had room after 4 oz.). Most of the time I could tolerate 3oz. and would snack on low-fat cheese or chicken bone broth LS to make up the protein. I smeared veggies into a sauce to put on the meat, average amount 1 teaspoon.

I fired my clinic's nutritionist today
I’m so happy you’re speaking up for yourself @vikingbeast! I’ve noticed that’s a positive attribute many of us achieve after WLS. Maybe it’s the process of fighting for ourselves to get the surgery, and all the work before and after? I’ve also noticed a big difference between a nutritionist and a fully fledged dietitian with licensure. Dietitians also can meet nation accreditations in specific areas like bariatrics. Look before you listen!

Liver reduction day of surgery
Do your best, it’s all anyone can do. I’ve watched WL surgeries on TLC UK and Dr. Shaw Summers would comment on large livers as, “ some people just have big livers.” The docs will alter plans if it’s so. Stick with your bariatric plan.

Thanks to this forum I hit ONDERLAND today!!! 173 Days Post OP
Hooray!

I need cofffeeeee NOW!
Me too, just one or two ounces in the shake in the morning. My doc frowns on it, but compared to 4-5 cups it’s a livable choice.

How many of you had diarrhea post bypass? How long did it last?
I had surprise liquid poops that bordered on incontinence until I started ground meats. I agree with others on here that you could have developed an intolerance. Sounds like you did check with your WL center. I hope it improves for you with the ground meat stage. (By the way, if you are super lactose intolerant the lactase pills won’t help much, just my experience.)

TMI everything I eat goes straight through
I found if I was eating liquids I pooped liquids. As soon as I switched to the ground meat phase, there were no more surprises.

Teachers out there... (or anyone with stressful jobs)
I love this fish idea! I never asked if they would cook it.

Teachers out there... (or anyone with stressful jobs)
I hear you! I was drinking my protein shake outside at recess when I had duty, just to get some liquids and protein down. I eat snack outside with the kids during the morning snack break. It’s usually an once of cheese or deli meat. I prepare meals ahead of time on Sunday and Wednesday and pack little 2 or 4 oz OXO toddler packs for lunch. I save a meatball or an Epic venison bar for after school snack. Now, my problem is the weekend when I don’t have that structure. I’m looking for healthy tips to make good choices with my unstructured time and I need to unstress. Just a work in progress…I’m thinking of yoga Saturday morning? Has anyone had luck with that? Xtinadoesit how stressful is your home life?

Moms that do it all
I was a nanny, then preschool teacher, mom, and now elementary teacher who restricted calories or fasted and I agree with the above posted. Look at history too, Victorian, Edwardian, WWII moms did not play with their kids. They sent the kids to play in the backyard and called them in for meals and a nap. They sat at the table and had family conversations. The children had excellent communication and self soothing skills. The exception was rainy days when moms couldn’t wash laundry or the floors anyway and the kids were inside so they played games or sang or read together, not too labor intensive. You might want to have an exclusive “chamber pot” for yourself :) As for cleaning, who’s inspecting your house anyway? Divvy up the chores to the kids, use paper plates, have the kids wipe down the shower/bath after use, have the kids sort socks and fold and put away their own clothes because it’s good for them to help around the house! All the while you keep drinking your water and electrolytes and protein drinks. You’ve got this covered, you’re the boss!
