After 1 failed surgery and 1 cancelled surgery, I believe that the 3rd attempt is going to happen. I am excitedly nervous after the first attempted surgery my blood pressure dropped to 40/20 and my O2 went into the 60's after the anesthesia was given to me and they had to stop the surgery. That was exactly one year ago on 9/5/2019. Then I was scheduled again 3/26/2020 but we all know what happened in March (Covid), when our lives were all halted, so no surgery then. Over the last year, I have been diagnosed with a rare form of asthma and the treatment for that has been successful, my blood tests and pressures are all very stable, and I feel that my body and mind are finally ready for this to happen.
I am scheduled to have my RnY on 9/16. After all this time (I have been waiting for this for 3 years) I can't believe it is actually going to happen. If you think that going on the pre-op diet once is bad, try 3 times....LOL BTW-does anyone ever cheat on the pre-op diet??? This diet sure reinforces my decision to have the surgery, so I can have a smaller stomach and less hunger to help me stay in control of my food. It is so hard to control my food, on this pre-op diet, for just two weeks.
I am a Christian and have always felt that God was leading me to do this. I know that Dr Hunter is Very good and has brought me this far. He would not be doing this if he wasn't sure of the procedure. I have to be in the operating room for 6-8 hours because he has to take down my Nissin surgery before he can do my RNY. I know that God will be with the team and watching over me......

RichelleGetsFit0309 reacted to catwoman7 in Scolded for using "wrong" protein shake post-op
I believe Premier Protein is a whey Protein concentrate or a protein blend, which isn't as readily absorbed by us as shakes made from whey protein isolate. We were told to stick to whey protein isolate the first few weeks after surgery when it would have been tough to get in our 60+ grams of protein through food. Unjury products ARE whey protein isolate - so are Syntrax Nectar products, and a few others. Still, it's weird that she reacted that way rather than just explaining it to you! (I drink a lot of protein blends now, but I'm quite a ways out and can easily get in my protein requirements through food - but I did drink whey protein isolate when I was early out)

One thing to note is that the Premiere Protein Powder is much different than the pre-made shakes, though it does still use concentrate, but the isolate is in a greater quantity:
    INGREDIENTS
Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Contains 2% or Less of Soluble Corn Fiber, Sunflower Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Acesulfame Potassium, Sucralose, Xanthan Gum, Salt.
    CONTAINS: MILK

Just an update, I am quite amazed I have not experienced any nausea at all. It does take me almost 45 minutes to finish one Premier Protein drink. I’m not sure if I’m still holding fluids or not. I did weigh myself today (almost 7 days post op) and from the day before surgery, I’ve only lost 3 lbs which is very discouraging.
I am starting to get my energy back and actually grocery shopped today.
I am able to sleep on my stomach now which is a blessing. My stomach is still sore but not as bad as it first was. I still have some gas pain but that is going away. I started taking a chewable probiotic and I’ve been able to use the bathroom finally!

I have a tip for helping with smelling food and getting hungry. Take a small amount of Vicks and apply in around the bottom of the nostrils. It will block the scent of food or mix with it and make it less attractive. Try to avoid commercials of food. To help me do that I am streaming instead of watching live tv. I think in my case I was easily triggered to eat by smells and sights of food. That didn’t go away even though my stomach can no longer fit the food. Be prepared to make some adjustments to your environment even if it means getting out of the area where food is served until you get used to your new way of eating. Good luck!

Yup. I was tired a lot my first week post op. I’m entering my second week and have more energy due to the fact that I’m able to take in more liquids and Protein but I still need a nap in the afternoon but it’s not as bad as it used to be the first week.

RichelleGetsFit0309 reacted to AZhiker in Carbs and fats
I think the general feeling is to limit the carbs until you get closer to maintenance. Just getting the Protein and fluids in is a major accomplishment for a long time, and then adding veggies and some fruit is more than enough. Adding carbs and fatty foods like nuts and nut butters can slow down your weight loss. I reached goal in 7 months, but did not even think of adding a grain based carb, nuts, or nut butters until then. Then I added them very gradually, to ensure I wouldn't start regaining.
I am 18 months out now, and am eating a whole foods plant based (WFPB) diet now. I get all my protein in, but it comes from legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and non dairy milk/yogurt. I eat a lot of carbs now - but they are whole grains, legumes, fruits and veggies - nothing processed. I eat nuts and seeds every day. I also eat 8-10 servings of veggies/fruit every day, so I am NEVER hungry with that much volume. This all to say that there are a lot of different ways to eat after surgery, but initially, until you reach goal, you need to stick to your protein, Water, legumes, veggies. The other stuff can come later.
The first 6 months are where you are going to lose a lot of weight. The first year is the golden year, and you want to maximize the opportunity to lose as much as you can during that time. After 12-18 months (sometimes sooner, sometimes later), the weight loss will slow down, your body will start absorbing nutrients more easily, you will lose the tight restriction, and all your new lifestyle modifications will be the real tools you will use to maintain your new weight. The surgery gets the weight off, but you need to do the rest. Don't waste those first months. Hold off on maintenance foods like grain based carbs, starchy vegetables, and nuts/nut butters until you are ready to stop losing and start maintaining. Just my 2 cents worth. I'm sure others will have different ideas.

I had a few reasons for not telling anyone about my surgery. I didn't tell my family because I first looked into this surgery about 15 years ago, and my mom played a big role in talking me out of it because she thought it was dangerous and that I was going to die or have horrible complications. This time around, I did my own research and made my own decision and didn't want to give my mom or anyone else a chance to talk me out of it. I have three siblings who have always been thin, so I have a feeling they would be judgmental about it. People who have never struggled with their weight don't understand why it's not that easy for everyone to just eat less and exercise more.
I didn't tell anyone at work because I have heard negative comments about weight loss surgery from coworkers. Something that has stuck with me for years is a former coworker who complained about his wife's health insurance costs going up because she worked at a small company and two employees had weight loss surgery in one year. This guy was on his wife's health insurance instead of our company's because it used to cost less, and he complained that it was now more expensive than ours because these two ladies were "too lazy to just go on a diet." I have several current coworkers who are really into diet and fitness to the point that they make me uncomfortable, and although I've never heard any comments from them specifically about weight loss surgery, I have a feeling they would be judgmental.
Finally, I am a very private person in general and I am careful about what information I share about my life. I wouldn't tell my coworkers if I were having, say, gallbladder surgery or a hysterectomy, either. People might figure it out on their own if I lose enough weight, but I'm not going out of my way to tell anyone about it.

My surgery is Monday, so on one hand I’m hoping the weekend goes quickly, but on the other, hand, not so much as I’m starting to get a bit nervous.
I received a surprise call from my surgeon yesterday which was great, and a separate call from one of Bariatric nurses, reviewing final details and pre op prep for the day before and morning of surgery. So I’m ready, just nervous.

I totally agree that each mistake needs to be an opportunity for insight, learning, and growth. This first year is the time to really zero in on WHY you overeat, and to develop tools to change both the thinking patterns and the habits. For example, I caved to cravings for French fries after 2 long bike rides. I was sick afterward and regretted the choices. But I discovered I was not getting enough electrolytes during my rides and was craving the salt. Once I learned a new way to hydrate, I was fine. I still struggle with eating during the evenings. I still haven't unraveled the complexities of night time binging, but in the mean time, I am making choices to drink a big mug of hot herbal tea in the evenings. I also prep raw veggies to have on hand if there is a total munch attack. There is a theory that you cannot break a bad habit without replacing it with a better habit. So until I figure out the evening "hand-to-mouth" disease, I will substitute healthy alternatives. Just some thoughts....... but the big lesson is to LEARN a lesson every time there is a slip. You can't just brush it under the rug and pretend it didn't happen and that you will do better next time. Unless you learn and prepare for "next time" there will never be a permanent change.

I don’t think they will cancel the surgery and you have plenty of time to drop the weight before your surgery date. During the liquid diet phase I lost 13 pounds. You got this!

Day 21 - progressing to soft foods. This morning I had 2 eggs scrambled with 1/2 tsp of smart balance with low fat Mexican cheese blend. It was a bit dry so I used Sabra guacamole in the single serving size on the side. Delicious! I tried a 1/4 cup of daisy low fat cheese which I ate after taking two lactase enzyme pills. For dinner I grilled frozen tilapia with 1 tsp of olive oil. I chopped it well and served it with 3 tabs plain yogurt mixed with Lipton dry vegetable Soup mix. I ate very slowly using an infant feeding spoon. I stopped when I felt full and finished the rest as tolerated. I’m getting bored with plain Water. I’m going to see about getting some Crystal light powders to change things up. I’m craving pink lemonade flavor. I put on a little makeup today which I haven’t done in a long time. I don’t want to wear any shabby clothes either. I’m tossing them out. I don’t want to save any big clothes. I know how big I got. I have pictures that cause me great pain to look at. No need to keep the outfits.

People *really* like to stick their noses in people's business where it doesn't belong. I brought it up thinking my friends and family would be happy to hear about me taking a positive change toward healthy, but I was met with a lot of negative comments. I ended up not telling anyone else until afterward, once I started losing the weight.
It is *not* a quick fix, no matter what people tell you. It's a tool to help you get your life on track in a healthy way. There will be a honeymoon period where the weight falls off with you doing nothing, but once that stops, it's all on you. It's not the "easy way out."
I had a lot of health problems before this. I've lost almost 100 pounds in 8 months and, despite a little saggy skin, my health is the best it's ever been in my entire life. I have normal blood pressure, I'm not longer at risk of a heart attack, I am not at risk for diabetes, I have more energy than ever before and actually want to get out and do things...
People are going to be supportive and people are going to be total jerks about it. You just gotta make sure you listen to what *you* want to do. It's your body and it's your health. ❤️

Ok so surgery went well for me. I just had to learn to sip slowly or you will get the throwing up feeling but nothing will come out. I stayed in the hospital overnight. I was originally told no one would be able to go with me on the floor but that wasn't the case. My husband stayed with me for almost two hours. He then came back when I was on the floor. Visiting hours were 2 to 6. He stayed for a little bit but let me rest. I was able to walk to the bathroom by myself several times. Overall not a bad surgery.

Well today I officially joined the losers bench. Surgery went really well and for the first time, I didn’t experience any post op nausea which I normally do even with EGD’s, my hysterectomy and my ball bladder removal.

Prior to surgery they gave me Tylenol, Celebrex and Gamapentin and that combination seemed to work well for me. I’ve been sleeping off and on all day .

I’ve drank about 10 ounces of Water for far and I’ve walked the halls a few times.

I did ask what size sleeve I was given and the fellow for my surgeon told me a 32 French.  I don’t have any clue if that’s small or not.

I will say the care here at Cleveland Clinic has been amazing so far.

My husband spent the better part of the day here and he has gone home now.

If everyone continues to go well, I will get to go home tomorrow.

One thing- my first trip to the bathroom was well, interesting, as I had no clue I was peeing and when I stood up thinking I was done I realized I was still going and had to clean myself up some 😂.
