I’m ten pounds from where I’d like to be but overall have had a good year. My constant issue is snacking junk but I do have my positive habits (exercise, Water, protein) intact. How you doing?

Have you tried tracking your daily intake at MyFitnessPal? The app is great, every food in the world is on there and you will be able to identify if its your diet that needs tweaked, or if your body has simply hit a plateau. Be patient, but in my opinion WW probably would not be applicable for our little belly.

I noticed today that I actually weigh 5 lbs. less than the wild lie that has been listed on my driver's license for the past 25 years! 🤣🤩 I guess it qualifies as a NSV.

It's crazy that some states require a weight for the driver's license. I've had a license in 3 states - PA, FL, and MA, and none required me to put a weight. Anyway, Congrats!

Congratulations on your persistence! Great results! Thanks for sharing specifics of your routine. I am 5 pounds from Onederland and just plan on sticking with what I have been doing and I will get there. Like you: avoid junk, exercise and 900-1100 calories of clean food daily. Even the Water intake at 50-60 ounces is getting easier/automatic. Yay!

Weight loss is an important way to improve or maintain health, but it is not the only way. Can you forget about weight loss for a while and work on finding a healthy diet and regular exercise that you can stick to and even enjoy for the long term? Focusing on weight loss can be counterproductive since failure leads to giving up, when the ultimate goal is improved health and vitality, not dress size. For me walking, bicycling and dancing are so much more enjoyable than CrossFit, so I would be much more likely to continue them, even if I don’t lose weight. The same thing applies to your diet. Work with a nutritionist (if you can) to come up with a sustainable diet plan. It may be that your doctor’s weight goal won’t be attained, but if your health and happiness improves, you win anyway.

    Officially 9 months post op and I weigh 169lbs at 5’8 1/2.

    HW 252lbs (January 2020)
    Pre-op diet starting weight (236lbs on August 14, 2020)
    SW: 228 (August 27, 2020)
    CW: 169
    Goal Weight (158-163 range)

My BMI is currently 24.99 so I’ve finally crossed into what “they” call the normal range! Ha

    I feel great.

    I’ve had zero complications.

I have not had any alcohol since pre surgery and don’t plan on trying any until at least 1 year post op. (I’ve never been a big drinker but would enjoy the occasional margarita or glass of wine). My surgeon asks his patients to wait a year and I told him I would.

I do exercise at least 5 times a week incorporating cardio and strength (arms to try and tighten the loose skin- at age 44 things down bounce back like the used to). I’ve done this since I was 6 weeks post op.

I haven’t cut out any foods. I don’t tolerate spicy foods like I used too so I don’t eat a lot of those. I don’t eat a lot of Pasta or rice either - I’ll try a bite or put a small servings (think tablespoon) on my plate but I’m still focusing on Protein and still aim for 80 grams of protein a day and drink one Premier Protein shake on most days). Yes I eat carbs and will have mashed potatoes, cookie or piece of cake (everything in moderation right?)

Some days I get in 64-72 ounces of Water other days I’m lucky if I get 45.

For all of those in the fence (I was too), just know you can do it - it’s never too late to get yourself healthy.

I turned a blessed 69 yesterday! I had my VSG last August. My fears of being too old were unfounded. All of my numbers have improved and I'm thrilled. The hardest part has been eliminating my junk food snacking habit. It has been easier to control in the past few weeks. Dropping the crap has been the key to my success. How are you all doing it?

I am so happy to see someone addressing this "age issue."I am just like many of you who already responded. I was average weight until after I had my second child and from then on it was nothing but yo-yo dieting. I thought about surgery in my mid-50s but found it unaffordable. I knew nothing about ways to get insurance to pay. Plus I was leery of the invasive procedure. Thank God for Medicare . So now I am 68, six weeks postop and feeling fine. I had no nausea ,pain or other difficulties at surgery and my recovery and food plan compliance have been fantastic. I wish I had done this years ago and I am looking forward to a very bright future . I say go for it!!!

I’m 62 right now but will be 63 by the time I have my surgery 6/1/21. I was put on my first diet when I was in 2nd grade. They actually put me on diet pills that made me sooooo shaky! Mom cut the pills in half but I was still shaky so cut them into quarters and that worked better but now, today looking back at that and knowing what I now know (I’m a nurse) I just want to ask them “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????” Putting a 4th grader on dexies!!! OMG! After gaining back the 40 lbs id lost (plus some, of course) I was on Weight Watchers, Optifast, Medifast, cabbage Soup diet, Atkins, and on and on. This surgery is hopefully the tool I’ve been searching for! I’m excited by the support from others on this site and I hope to be able to offer support to there as well! We got this!!!

Your surgeon expects you to lose 30lb a month with a start weight of 227lb? That is ridiculous, talk about setting up a patient for disappointment and sense of failure.

How do you know that you've "stretched your stomach"? Because most likely you didn't. You got used to larger portions and that's normal up to a certain degree. Dr. Matthew Weiner has interesting videos on this on YouTube.
But you did go to the planned appointments?
What "lies" did you tell yourself and why do you feel that you "didn't earn" your weight loss? Weight loss after surgery is nothing that needs to be "earned". WLS is a surgical therapy that is supposed to work for the patient like coronary bypass surgery is supposed to work for the patient. You don't need to earn anything here!
Having WLS is like learning to swim. You can read everything about swimming that's available, you can get lessons on how to learn the best technique, you can talk to people who have learnt to swim until you're blue in the face - but you know what? Most of this stuff means diddly squat the moment you hit the Water for the first time!
I'm curious about the title. Tell us!
There are people who lost weight without exercising. Yes, there are many benefits to exercising like cardiovascular health, bone strength, uplifting your mood etc but if you hate it - you don't need to.
Stop acting like a sinner that needs to do penance, it's so damn destructive and will get you nowhere in the end. There's nothing to confess. We all screwed up with quite a few things in life.
Be kind to yourself, as hard as it might be right now.

Rara reacted to Jaelzion in HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE LOSS OF FOOD AS AN EMOTIONAL TOOL?
I definitely have experienced this. At first I found myself substituting shopping for eating (easy to do, having lost so much weight). Then I realized I was doing that and took a step back. Now when I feel that craving (whether for food or to buy something) I stop and ask myself why? What's going on that I am trying to assuage or pacify? Not long ago, I really wanted a cookie and when I stopped to ask myself why, I realized that I had just come out of a meeting that did not go as well as I had hoped. I felt disappointed, embarrassed, upset. And I wanted a cookie. Once I realized what was at the root of my craving, I was able to redirect those feelings. I got a cup of coffee instead. It was warm and sweet and about 200 fewer calories than the cookie. And I took it and went and sat around the backside of the building where it was quiet and peaceful (being an introvert, that was comforting to me). I thought through what had happened and what to do next as I drank my coffee. And 30 minutes later I was good to go. Every situation is different, but I'm getting better at asking myself "What's going on? Why do you want that?"

Rara reacted to Arabesque in Diet Once You’re Back to Regular Foods
I kept it very simple: any meat or seafood, vegetables (no root vegetables), fruit, dairy, low fat, very low carb (naturally occurring like in vegetables & rolled oats) & very low sugar (none if I could help it) . Didn’t follow a particular diet just the recommended foods to eat & avoid from my surgeon & dietician. I prepped & cooked everything myself so I could control the ingredients & how it was cooked. I still pretty much follow this.
Don’t be surprised if you find you struggle with a lot of food to begin. Many find their taste buds change & your sense of smell may be very sensitive. You may even find something you eat one day makes you unwell the next. Your tummy is pretty sensitive to begin. This all does improve as time passes. Honestly I was lucky, I could eat most foods ... just really small portions of course. It was my beloved vegetables that caused me the most problems - they tasted terrible or just didn’t sit right. It’s a bit of trial & error to start to find what you & your tummy likes at first.
Also, I didn’t do any shakes once I got to solid food because I wanted to get all my nutrients from the food I ate (plus they were disgusting) - has worked well for me.
Take this time to establish new ways of cooking & prepping foods & try new healthier food choices. Do your research & cherry pick the best ideas that work for you, enable you to meet your Protein goal, get your nutrients in & not compromise how you want to enjoy your life.
I don’t follow a particular diet nor consider that I’m on a diet. This is just how & what I eat.
    Good luck.

Hi, My Situation is very similar to yours. In my early 30s, after I had my second child my weight began to soar. I tried every diet and yo-yo’ed for years until I was able to have VSG last summer at the age of 68. The surgery and recovery was easy and after almost 6 months out I’ve lost about 47 pounds. If I had been more diligent, my loss would’ve been greater..... but those old demons of snacking on chips and candy are still a reality, even after surgery. I had a lot of questions about having surgery as a senior but doctors and friends have shown me the fight is the same for all of us! I’m sure you will be very happy with your journey and progress to a whole new better you.

Your body is wondering what the hell you just did to it. It went through a major trauma of surgery and is healing. Now you're feeding it way less than it's used to getting. It happens. It really is okay, I promise you. You're doing everything right. I can't explain the science to you, I just know it's real. For instance, I have been eating 650-800 calories for the past 12 days. For the first 5 days I lost weight. For the next 3 days, I GAINED weight. How the hell do you gain weight on 800 calories/day? But I did and I figured it was my body adjusting, plus I was eating green olives, which are high in sodium. So now fast forward two more days and it's slowly coming down again. Weight fluctuations are normal. Take it easy on yourself and take care and trust the process. 😀
