I'm losing slow too, on average 2 to 3 lbs a week and I'm 4 weeks out on Monday. I actually lost more on my pre op diet the week before surgery. How ever I'm still down almost 25 lbs in a month thats way more than I've been able to lose in ages. I average about 600 calories a day some times more some times less and I wonder if maybe I'm not eating enough either. Hang in there you're doing great

Hi everyone! I'm new here. I had gastric sleeve surgery on 12/2 so tomorrow I am 3 weeks out. I have actually lost the most weight on the week long pre OP diet the surgery had me on and since surgery ive lost 9 lbs. I have at least 120 lbs to lose so not sure why its going so slow considering I am only taking in about 600 calories a day. We all hear about starvation mode but I'm not sure if that's a myth plus were able to eat so little now our bodies have to catch up I think. I'm a bit frustrated as it seems like I'm not losing as quick how ever I'm down 21 lbs in just under 4 weeks which is way more than ive lost in ages. Has anyone else had slow weight loss even in the beginning?? Thanks!

On Monday I'll hit 6 weeks out of surgery and have lost 32ish lbs. I'm on my cycle now, so I'm guessing that's why I haven't lost so much this week lol

I agree with this - sounds like the dreaded three-week stall (usually happens during the third week, but not always - the first major stall can happen any time during the first 4-6 weeks or so of surgery). Just stick to your plan and the weight loss will start up again. My first stall lasted two weeks, but once my weight loss started up again, I dropped like 6-8 lbs within a couple of days.

Keep in Mind, the ER Nurse is ONLY going to see those with issues. Those of us that have had absolutely no issues have not been to the ER.

I totally agree with this. As soon as I added 100 to 150 calories a day (I max at 800ish), i have consistently been losing close to 1/2 lb a day! We have to realize even 800 a day is a pretty big calorie deficit as most of us are well over 200 lbs when we start

In my opinion, any WLS is what you make of it in terms of weight loss. WLS is only a tool to help you along a weight loss journey. It's entirely up to YOU to follow your dietary and exercise recommendations, not only for immediate post-op but to continue to eat healthy and exercise well past maintenance.

I don't know what the statistics are, but a lot of WLS patients DO gain back weight. Maybe not all of it (although some do...), but big gains aren't all that uncommon. I think the biggest reason is that people start slacking off once they hit maintenance (if not before). You really have to keep on top of your eating for the rest of your life or you WILL gain weight.

I'm losing on average 3 lbs a week and I'm happy because before surgery I had trouble losing weight every damn day of my life. 5 years ago I lost 85, it crept back on and I had so much trouble since. I'm down 30.5 since surgery 5 weeks ago and I am not complaining.

I lost slowly as well. If a firm believer that my body did what was best for me. I can't help but to thing of the Tortoise and the Hare parable and it always comforted me.
    Good Luck everyone 💚

Before surgery, I found the slower I lost weight the longer I kept it off. As long as the needle moves slowly in the right direction, I’m happy. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Also, most people, like my surgeon, think I’m losing faster than average. I don’t think the people who are really sabotaging themselves post here unless they want to change.

Average expected weight loss post surgery is 2-4lbs per week. I know it FEELS like you are losing slowly, but you are averaging 14lbs/mo and there are 4.33 weeks in a month: you actually at about the 75% percentile which is really really lovely!
Not trying to denegrate your perception. Cuz perception is real. But WE control our thoughts which then control our emotions. And my knowing that in reality you AREN'T a slow loser, would allow you to feel and understand the great progress you are making?
    I shared your angst too...

Get off the dang Scale! You keep that up and you will end up in a rubber room with a jacket that buckles from the back - You are focusing on getting healthy - The weight loss will come - weigh in every 10 days that way Water weight changes will be not driving you nutz every day

I upped calories and Protein and I lost 5 lbs in the last 10 days. When i was eating 500 to 600... losing less. 700 to 850ish coming off easier. I dont believe necessarily in starvation mode but I'm eating pretty much low carb so I think that's helping as well even with a bit more calories

You and I have the same surgery date, 12/2! And I've lost about the same since surgery - it turns out there's a standard three-week stall. Check out the discussions under POST-operative weight loss surgery Q & A - they have been super helpful to me. I'm now stalled after three weeks having lost 12 lbs since surgery but only 2 lbs this past week, and 8 lbs two weeks prior.
In a couple articles I read online it says the liver was shrunk for surgery but works to get back to a normal size afterward and it takes - yep - three weeks. Sometimes this stall can last several weeks but afterward there can be a sudden, large loss. Apparently there will be multiple stalls along the way.
The articles also said not to go below 600 calories a day as that can backfire as the body tries to store what it can during what it perceives as starvation time. I know many don't believe in starvation mode and I'm not sure it isn't just a myth. But to stay healthy it makes sense that at least 600 good quality calories a day is a good idea no matter the reason.
Also, the weight loss rate depends on several factors. Males lose faster, those who are much bigger initially lose faster, women after menopause slower (that's me), etc. I'm reminding myself that prior to surgery it took me six months to lose 11 lbs. on my own...and my pre-diabetes and non-alcoholic liver disease labs and my borderline high blood pressure had not improved at all, though my cholesterol levels did. Post-surgery all are now in the normal range! No diabetes looming for me (like my mother), thank goodness.
Here's wishing us both good luck during the dreaded three-week stall. We'll get there! I'm greatly encouraged by some of the posts about the three-week stall under the Post-op Q & A where the stats show those posting lost all or most of there weight and reached their goals despite having stalls and slow weight loss overall.
