This is the most recent comparison that I have. SW (5/1/19) 327, VSG (12/17/19)- 264, RNY revision (8/11/20)- 211, Thanksgiving weight- 185
I had emergency surgery 12/26/20 so I haven’t taken a current photo lately but my current weight is 157, so 7lbs from goal.

Starting weight over 220 (not sure I wouldn’t get on a scale but estimate that) RNY July 2020, current weight 138. Wearing size small/medium and 6/8 bottoms. In the before I was wearing 18 shorts and XXL tops. I feel so amazing and so happy with the results!!

Okay, I'll play along! I don't have a "before" pic that really represents how big I was, because I generally avoided being photographed back then. My before is from a chorus concert I did--and I will admit that I was wearing a "man girdle" at the time. (Cringe.)
I went from 250 to a low of 132 before bouncing back up to 142.

This is more of a before and during, as I am not quite to goal. First pics were right before starting my pre-op diet in late June and the last pic is two days ago. Size 20-22 down to an 8 in less than seven months. Loving all of the energy I have now!

Everyone looks so great. Congrats on your success.
I lost 31kg in 6 months which was my goal & a further 11kg in the last 13 months. The first pxt was about 6 months before surgery - can’t believe I was that big. The second was last week.
It’s a big decision to change how your body functions so your worries are understandable. Having surgery was the best decision I ever made. My journey was pretty smooth. A couple of little hiccups (low blood pressure, a little hyperglycaemia) all manageable & all things I’d experienced in the past when I had been slim. Certainly nothing that makes me regret my decision.
    Good luck on your journey.

I'm a guy but hope this helps. This came up as one of those "memories" timeline photos - MAY 2019 vs MAY 2020 on the same day. Surgery is a helpful tool, but you have to put in work as well! (VSG not bypass - but same concept)

first picture was me before I started my six-month supervised diet (2014). I think I was at my highest weight ever. Second picture (from 2017) is of me when I was two years out of surgery (this was before I had my skin removal surgery, though...I had that in Aug 2018 and March 2019). Last one was of me on my 60th birthday (last year). I've put on some weight since the 2017 picture - but excess skin is gone!

My Dr said the surgery would get me to the top range of the healthy BMI for my height, that was what he'd count as a successful surgery outcome. I've smashed past that and now I'm closer to an underweight BMI than a healthy one, which seems surreal to me.

the average weight loss for a bariatric patient is about 70% of your excess weight, so that's what they'll often give you as a goal since statistically, that's likely where you'll end up. But as with any average, there are people who lose more or less than that. You'll find several people on here who've lost much more than that - even 100% of their excess weight. It takes a lot of work, but some people do manage to get there.
I should add that there's a line of thought (and my PCP happens to agree with this) that a 23-27 BMI is the healthiest range for adults, esp for older adults (and I'm one of them....) - so it could be that your surgeon is one who's on board with that opinion, too.
in either case, if you put your mind to it and really work at it, you can probably do better than that (if you want to...)

My surgeon asked me if I had a goal. I suggested 60kg (BMI of about 23) as I had been that weight before & had been happy then. He agreed & said it was a sensible goal for my height, age & lifestyle. When I surpassed it by 5kg he was initially concerned but after we talked about it he was ok. I lost another 5kg while I was working out my maintenance plan but have been stable for about 4 months.
Personally I think you need to consider what is the weight that will allow you to live the life you want & you can happily maintain. And if your goal changes, that’s your choice. It’s not always about the number on the scales. For me it’s about being happy & healthy.

Oh, all the time. When I first was out of surgery, it was worse, though. I think the amount of hormones rushing around in your body has something to do with it, but it does settle down over time. Now that I've lost a lot of weight, it's just because I don't have that fat layer warming me anymore. Not complaining, though. I live in the desert, so it's kinda nice that I'm not miserable all the time now.

    Love these updates!

The first place I’m getting plastics done will be face/neck.
Never realized how “old” losing >100 pounds would make me look.

Then maybe— maybe this time next year I’ll think about other parts of my bod (I’m looking at you, thighs)

Congrats on losing 50lb - amazing.
I think some people have a mental image of us & it takes a long time for it to change to the new reality. A friend said she was surprised when I told her how much I weighed because she didn’t think I was anywhere near that big - I was. A niece asked me last month when I’d cut my hair. It had been >4months since I’d had 12inches cut off & I’d seen her several times (ahh self involved youth).
Also we all carry & lose weight weight differently. Unfortunately it seems the higher our starting weight the longer it takes for any loss to become noticeable. You may find people will comment on a loss of a couple of pounds when you’re near or at your goal.
I think we like to hear positive comments about our weight loss progress because it’s motivating. They reaffirm our achievements & hard work. We are human & we all like to be acknowledged & receive praise. 😁

Last time I lost weight I got really offended by people who commented on it... like was I so bad looking before? Now I welcome the compliments, but I can understand people not wanting to offend either way.

P.S. I ran into a former co-worker once and she didn't recognize me (she knew me when I was 200 lbs heavier). When I told her who I was, she said "oh - sorry - you look so different - your hairstyle is different or something". WTF???? I do think some people are just afraid to comment on other people's weight.
