In my opinion, you will not lose the "OLD" you, but you will gain a better you. I am still the same person that my morbid obese me was, but better. I feel better, I move much better, I can do things with my family (and not have to stop and catch my breath), and I am now running, which I had a hard time just walking. Relax and take a deep breath. You will be very happy that you had this surgery. God bless you on your journey.

Sorry I didn't get back to people after starting this post. I went to the hospital and ended up admitted for 12 days. I injured my kidneys due to dehydration. I'm now at home with 3 different types of anti-nausea pills. They determined there is no problem with my surgery (no stricture, no kink, no ulcers), but they don't have a reason why I've been so sick. Thanks everyone for the advise to get to the hospital!

CanadianDreamer got a reaction from Frustr8 in Vomiting for days - can't even keep down water
Hi there. I'm two months out from my surgery (July/16/2019) and I was doing great until about a week ago. Then I started vomiting unexpectedly. I've been very lucky up until then, as I had only been sick once from a food that didn't agree with me to that point. When I got sick last week, I took note as to what I had eaten, and it was nothing new. The next day I vomited even more. Last Sunday I was vomiting a lot and could hardly eat or drink anything without feeling sick. I called my surgery clinic office to tell them what was happening on Monday, and told them I had an appointment with my family doctor booked for Tuesday (coincidentally). Since Monday noon, I've been unable to hold down anything solid. My family doctor thinks I have a stomach virus, but now it's Friday and I still can't hold down anything (I keep vomiting water). I've phoned my clinic 3 times now and they make note of it, but have given me little guidance on what to do. I've tried Gravol and it helps a bit (at least some Water stays down), but seeing no improvement after a week has me worried that it's something going wrong with my surgery. Has anyone else experienced extreme nausea and vomiting for days? What caused it?

Hi! Is there anyone else out there who is in Canada and going through the pre-op process? I'm in Ontario and would love to talk to anyone, especially if you go to St. Jo's in Hamilton.
The staff there are wonderful and very informative! I'm scheduled to have surgery on October 15!! I'm so excited to get started on this journey.
I've already lost 35 lbs on my own! Can't wait to lose the rest and feel better. I'll be able to keep up with my grandkids, get off some medication and just feel better!

When you deny craving it can make you want them more. Keep healthy options for sweet and salty cravings on hand. Real food stage You can make old favorites in a healthy way. No need to add extra calories and gain weight.
Make sure my examples fit your food plan and stay within your weight loss calories/macros for the day. (log your food) Try to satify cravings with real whole foods first.
    pizza
mushroom cap pizza bites or cauliflower crust pizza – add lots of veggies use the meats allowed on your plan. Limit or omit cheese depending on your plan.
turkey meatballs dipped in pizza sauce
    Hamburgers –
Turkey burgers – You can buy butter ball frozen patties for convenience or make your own. I place them on a bed of salad add pickles, Tomato and onion. Optional olive oil mayo and mustard.
Or a lettuce wrapped burger -
    chips – Salty cravings
crisp veggies dipped in hummus or any low calorie dip – to cut the calories in hummus I add plain yogurt
Quest Protein chips. They are made from Protein Powder. The flavor is better if you dip them in salsa. I like the BBQ or nacho. I try not to make these a habit. (processed food) I use them as a snack to kick a craving.
    beef or chicken Jerkey
    chicken fajitas no tortilla
    Sweet –
Dannon light n fit Greek yogurt - option freeze to make popsicle
    Protein Bar or shake
Small amount of strawberries – option dip in hersheys sugar free cholate Syrup

My arthritis had gotten so bad from decades of carrying around extra weight. I had one knee replacement about 5 years ago and the other knee was due soon, as it hurt so bad all the time. Doc told me the cartilage was nearly gone. I also had continual lower back pain. But now, after losing over 100 pounds, I HAVE NO JOINT PAIN!!!! NONE!!!!. I have not used an NSAID for 7 months (ever since surgery) and not even a Tylenol. My back pain is GONE and my knees are fine! I can do anything now - including training for a triathelon in October! I am working in a new department where I am on my feet all day long and it is fine! I do 20+ flights of stairs a day, walk at least 10,000 steps, and am starting to bike. Joints are great!
You are going to feel soooooo much better! There is no way I would go back to the old way of eating and lose this new life and new body. (It looks kind of funny, to be sure, but it sure does work a lot better than the old one!) No brainer about the trade off: junk food for a triathelon. No contest.

No sugar for me. Besides making my joints hurt, I do not want to risk dumping syndrome. No alcohol, soda, or coffee, either. I have Barret's esophagitis and do not want to risk any further damage to tissues. I have also seen the incredible damage alcohol can do to the anastamosis after WLS (I am a GI nurse.)
After WLS, every bite needs to be as nutritious as possible. We can't hold much volume, and there can be decreased nutritional absorption from what we do eat. We have to eat the healthiest diet possible, with very little room for junk. All my 6 month labs came back really good for the Vitamins, Protein, and Iron, complete blood count, and chemistry, so I know I am doing it right. I do not eat processed foods or anything artificial. No soda or artificial sweeteners. The liver works very hard during rapid weight loss. It doesn't need any more work from processing junk. Refined grains and carbs jack up the insulin levels which result in fat storage, so that is why WLS eating plans are low carb. My carbs come from fruits and vegetables/legumes - very little from grains.
So in a nutshell, yes, there are foods you will give up - many for life because they simply are not good for you and will not help with your weight loss and maintenance. BUT..... you will discover so many healthy alternatives that after a while, the crap food doesn't even taste good anymore. My daughter made a gluten free cake today to test out a recipe for a wedding cake. I made a rare exception and had a tiny piece to help her assess texture and taste. It was a good cake, but so nauseatingly sweet I(I have not eaten sugar for 8 months) that I couldn't have taken a second bite if I wanted to. It has no appeal whatsoever. A few frozen grapes is about all the sweetness I can take. Your tastes change as you change your lifestyle. You can't look at these "forbidden" foods as deprivation. You have to reframe your thinking to see them as harmful and to look forward to the amazing payoff of eating healthy choices. Feeling so much energy, wearing small sized clothes, able to exercise without pain or getting winded, walking into a room and being one of the SMALLEST people there instead of the biggest, .... the list goes on and on. Any dietary "sacrifices" need to exchanged for a wonderful new life that awaits. Again.....you have to look at the benefits you GAIN - not the stuff you give up.

Ok, so I'm gonna give you unpopular advice, but advice that comes from the men and women who give us these surgeries and the RDs who work for them...
We will never be "perfect" but you can at least plan for "ideal" and accept that you are human. What the means? Don't look at mini meals as high reward events to "treat" yourself. Don't plan for maintaining or supporting the negative habit of "snacking" by making it a high reward event. Go for boring. Go for fuel. Change the thought and reframe it.
Right now, you need to eat minimeals cuz of your volume limits and how new you are post op. So each meal should NOT consist of highly processed foods. It should be 3-6 pretty evenly balanced calorie/macro mini-meals. (And from my standpoint I try to do clean/low reward/minimally processed foods that still satisfy--but that's just me.)

So mini meals now, since I can get most if not all of my food into 3 events, is actually 3 meals + 1-2 "snacks" of 100cals or less (think raw veggies and a yogurt ranch dip--homemade) if ABSOLUTELY necessary.
Snacking is a slippery slope--especially if you can eat 1cup of food volume per meal. It just packs on mindless (often slidery calories) that will inhibit maximum weight loss. And it's so possible to have a 500-600 calorie snack from crap! And if we've made it to the MO Ball, chances are we KNOW how to snack.
So a better question would be, what are some QUICK and easy mini meals?
    1. cheese stick/baby bel/light wedges
    2. 1-2oz rotisserie chicken
    3. L/F or plain yogurt with 1oz blueberries + PB2 powder
    4. Cottage cheese + 1oz of some kind of fruit you can eat or some savory veg
    5. Tuna/chicken/salmon pouches (2oz)
    6. P3 (processed, but still sometimes necessary)
    7. Lunchmeat roll-ups (processed, but still sometimes necessary)
    8. Bone Broth
    9. Leftover meats from previous meals
    10. SF Jello
    11. SF Popsicles
    12. 1 cup of raw veggies or salad with Greek Ranch dressing
    13. 1 cup of cooked veg or salad of your choice with minimal calorie dressing
    14. hard boiled eggs
    15. 1 tbsp nut butter with veggie sticks
    16. Iced Protein latte or frappacino
    17. cold boiled shrimp
    18. meat stick/beef Jerky (processed but sometimes still necessary)
    19. hummus and carrots or raw veggies

CanadianDreamer got a reaction from New_Me2019 in Anyone use a CPAP machine?
Hi, I just had my surgery last month. I have severe sleep apnea, and was required to provide proof of compliance (a one month report) to my surgical team before surgery. I have an "auto-PAP" machine that adjusts pressures as needed throughout the night. I wear a full mask, because I breathe through my mouth when I'm sleeping. I was told to bring my machine to the hospital when I had my surgery, and that they'd keep me in the recovery area longer because of my sleep apnea because it was dangerous to be asleep without it while recovering from the effects of anesthesia. They never put the machine on me there, but the nurse would often wake me when I was dozing and tell me to "breathe deeply". That night, they were delayed setting up my mask (they wanted oxygen added), so I slept without it for a few hours (with just an oxygen canula in my nose). I was awakened numerous times with the low oxygen alarm monitor ringing. Once awake, the alarm would stop. I probably drove my roommate mad! I was so happy when they set my machine up for me. I slept so much better for the rest of the night!
The sleep specialist doctor that I see has told me how serious it is to go without treating sleep apnea. It's really important to wear your machine if at all possible.

Please take sleep apnea very very serious. My husband has severe damage to his heart because of untreated sleep apnea. He spent 3 weeks in CICU for AFIB, Flutter and Congested Heart Failure due to sleep apnea. He is 48 years old. His heart has been damaged and is functioning at a 18% rate. He did not have problems sleeping, he snored! He was not tired or fatigued. Sleep apnea is a co-morbidity because it is no joke and kills. Weight loss often improves or cures sleep apnea. People do not stop using your CPAP without having a sleep study. We did this surgery to have a better longer life. Best of luck on your journey. I hope you take the medical steps needed to have a long and healthy future.

    Howdy sleevers!

My weight has stabilised at about 69kg over the past 5-6 months, and an opportunity came up with my plastic surgeon to take a cancellation surgery place (with 1 weeks notice) for last Tuesday 6th August for my first planned skin removal, FDL Tummy Tuck, and I went for it I had been set to get this operation at end of November.

I got home late yesterday after 5 days in hospital, and with 1 central drain still in place until I see my surgeon for follow up on Tuesday. Very happy with how my tummy is looking so far, and post op pain is being managed with panadol and some endone still. My waist was quite small before the op, but looks REEAAALLY tiny now, even with the post op swelling

I plan to have second skin removal at the end of November, after being in my little sister's wedding party, to get breast reduction and lift. Then further operations for upper arms in inner thighs next year.

Who else has started skin removal operations now post sleeve?

    Cheers,
    Tanya

Hi. Complications like a leak are not common. Both the bypass and sleeve have that as a remote possibility, but it doesn't happen very often. On the other hand, the complications that come with being morbidly obese are much more common!! Don't let your friend's experience cloud your judgment. I had gastric bypass 4.5 months ago and am off all diabetes meds, almost off blood pressure meds, no longer have constant body pain, and am healthier and happier. Have a positive attitude going into this, pick your surgeon well, and it is more likely than not that you won't have major complications! Good luck to you!

Oh man I can relate! Every day I was at least a 7 or 8 on a 1-10 scale and really most days I was at a 9-10. I would cry daily. And took pain pills and drank to help dim the pain. It was an awful existence non-existence!
I can tell you the difference at 5'4" and 56 years from 287lbs to 135lbs today is dramatically different!!! I still have neuropathy from cancer treatment/surgery, but my pain at the end of the day is a very manageable 3-4. I live life and can be active now! It's night and day difference in pain relief. And I only have had pain pills for an emergency surgery-and no alcohol for pain management either! It's a miracle! Can't wait for y'all to experience this!!!
