Coexister got a reaction from Christina760 in Sleeve to Bypass & hungry?
I had revision surgery October 7th and it took awhile before my hunger went away. I am now on soft foods and definitely do not feel the restrictions I did when I had the sleeve but I have also not eaten anywhere close to the amount I was eating pre-surgery. I am being cautious in my intake. Normally with sleeve I would feel some resistance with liquids but now they go down easier than ever which worries me. So I pray with regular food I will some kind of restrictions ?

I am the exact same way !!! I dont get the signal either until its too late. I had to start measuring food again because I can eat more with this bypass and it gets me into trouble with feeling like crap afterwards. I have to lay down and I cant throw up either so I suffer too. The sleeve was easier for me because it felt more natural. I knew when to stop.
I am sure you will have no problem reaching your goal and more then likely you will go under 145 !! Best of luck

I had revision due to bad reflux that was causing damage to my vocal chords but I also never reached my goal weight with the sleeve. I am hoping to reach 145 with this revision. I am currently at 154 and seem to be holding steady and am hoping for another drop. ; ) I was about 173 pre-surgery before the pre-op diet. I am now eating regular foods and am now realizing that there is a restriction and that if I do eat too much, it hurts really bad. I have had a few episodes with dumping however my body doesn't throw things up. I think it's because of the hiatal hernia repair with mesh that keeps foods from coming up. I wish I could throw up as it would be easier and provide relief at times but my body was always one that to hold things down and just make me suffer. So instead, I get the sweats and the pains and just suffer for a period of time. I am pretty much noticing that there is no indication of "about full" and that I am going to have to measure stuff and just stop before reaching the point the of no return. It seems to be all or nothing with this pouch. Once it realizes it is full, it's too late and I have overdone it. I probably need to learn to slow down even more and see if that works but I don't seem to get a signal to the brain that I am full? Maybe, I just never feel hungry and am just eating because I know I need too and so there is no signal because the head doesn't think it is hungry? I guess I need to take stock of what my body is feeling more and see where it goes. I am so terrified of drinking because it goes down so easy and I am always afraid that I am drinking too fast as being told that I could stretch my pouch by drinking to fast. So with that I am constantly trying to slow down my drinking and making sure I don't gulp down Water. My bowels are definitely acting different and I am hoping they level out at some point and they get easier as well as I am currently living on Miralax twice daily to keep things smooth, LOL. This is definitely a different journey then the sleeve. Seems the sleeve was easier?

I'm worried about the "restriction". A lot of VSG revision patients have said the same thing. They do not feel any restriction. Which goes to show, the mental part of this is so hard. Good for you. Keep up the hard, but good work.

I lost the 20 in about 10 weeks and it was actually 22 lbs. I now bounce around 5 lbs but am having no problems keeping it in that range. With VSG I wasnt able to get under 164.8 and struggled to stay under 170. I am not having that problem with this revision, but am missing the restriction from the VSG.

I know exactly what you are talking about and going through. It really messed with my head not feeling anything and fear/anxiety that I would gain all the weight back from not having restriction. I am 6 months out today and all is well as far as weight goes. You will lose at least 20 lbs and if you want to lose more you will. I still have no restrictive feeling but if I over eat I will get sick and trust me you dont want to get sick. If you are a dumper like me you wont be able to eat the wrong foods and will find out quickly what those are !! Good luck to you !

I am 4 1/2 weeks post op and have not felt any kind of restrictions as I did with my sleeve before being converted to Roux-en-Y along with a hiatal hernia repair. I am worried and especially now after seeing my operative report and knowing my Doctor only did a 30 ml pouch with a 150 cm Roux alimentary limb. This I understand is big and long for this surgery. Now I am scared I won’t lose that last bit of weight or maintain per not feeling any restrictions like I did with the sleeve. I am only on the soft foods /purée diet but with the sleeve I could feel restrictions with soft and liquids. Everything goes down like nothing. I have had no issues with dumping or nausea and can drink Water and liquids endlessly. The surgery has seemed to cure my heartburn but I don’t want to gain my weight back because of it. Anyone else on here with a 30 ml / 150 cm and similar situation that could share their experience or offer any reassurance?

You will lose weight. I was surprised that I hit the 150s. I never got below 164.8 with the sleeve and fought just to stay under 175. My metabolism isnt the best and I have never exercised through this whole thing because of my back. I strictly lost all my weight following the plan . I did lose 22 lbs after my revision 5 months ago and am maintaining with no problems. Its just different. Good luck

I was the same way after my revision. When I hit solid foods though, oh man there was a huge difference. I still have days 3 months out where even a 1/4 cup of things like pumpkin seeds (thoroughly chewed) or a couple bites of chicken make me hurt.
Lots of people notice more restrictions when they get to solid foods and dense Protein so try and just wait and see.

Do a pizza in a Cup - I am a chef so here you go
Take a cupcake tin or small bowl. Layer the bottom with moist bread crumbs. Soak them in Pizza sauce
Now bake that for 8 min to get them a little dry but still moist
Now add you meat - Of course Ground in a food proccessor and sauce again.
Now add you sprinkled cheese - and cover with a thin slice of cheese - Top with Oregano
Bake again - Eat with spoon getting each layer and there you go! WWPC

You are very early out and it's usually food intolerances that trigger this but since your gut is still adapting give it time before changing anything. Try chewable digestive enzymes. Garden of life makes great chewable digestive enzymes that are Whole Foods based but there are other brand said as well either from sites like or stores like Vitamin Shoppe (costs a bit more)

i only get this now when I have food intolerances or forget to take digestive enzymes with certain foods. Or just am generally feeling unwell. Give it time since your body is still recovering from the surgery. The digestive enzymes should be helpful and are great long term for anyone.

I am only 6 weeks out, but I have the same problem. I talked to my surgeon and he prescribed Cotazym ECS, Amylase & Protease & Lipase. This is very effective, but I also have to keep my intake at very low fat and sugar. Try this, it helped me.

Honestly gas can be avoided, especially stinky gas. Excessive and stinky gas is a signal from your body that it has an intolerance to something that you are eating, and/or is not digesting it properly.

    A. Figure out what foods are the worst offenders and avoid them
    b. For minor offenders and harder to digest meals in general take digestive enzymes, they are a good addition to everyone’s routine anyway (I’m trying out a new chewable digestive enzyme)
    c. If all else fails take a gas reliever... for me personally I like Hylands gas, it’s a sublingual homeopathic medication but for some reason it seems to work better. I’ve taken gas x and felt worse (likely an allergy to an ingredient)
better to go to the bathroom when you feel gassy than hold it in. But like I said even though we have altered digestive systems and yes poo will stink when it processes through the gut faster, that’s no reason for excessive gas. Or to just let loose and foul up everyone else’s day.

you can buy special underwear ... but better to look into the cause and preventing it first.
having digestive issues most of my life I know a bit too much on the subject of which I loathe.

Right. It just infuriates me that drs and hospitals will not manage pain very well after major surgery. It’s not only hard to deal with but it impedes healing.

Coexister reacted to Foxbins in VSG to RNY due to Gerd
My sleeve recovery was a breeze, too. RNY was a little harder. I definitely felt like my insides were rearranged the first couple of weeks. Now now so much.
My understanding, from my surgeon, is that it's the sleeve itself that makes the GERD so bad. It's a skinny tube with a valve at the bottom, and if the valve is shut, the only place for the reflux to go is up. RNY gives you a hose, open at both ends. The vagus nerve is also severed during RNY and has something to do with acid secretion. No acid+open-ended hose = no GERD. At least, that's the way it was explained to me.

I had a VSG December 2019. In March ended up developing a hiatal hernia and severe GERD. It was so bad I was on protonix, Pepcid, ans Tums for the reflux. I had also developed intractable hiccups esophagitis from the GERD. I had a VSG to RNY on 8/11 so I’m only 3 weeks out. I will say that I don’t remember being in this much pain after my VSG but the GERD is pretty much gone as far as I can tell. Still on the protonix twice a day until I’m 3months post-op.

Had my surgery October 7th converted to bypass and hiatal hernia repair. Had someStill feeling pain and had some really rough nights. Last night was first night I slept through without any incidents. Turns out nurse in hospital told me wrong pills to crush and once I figured that out it made a huge difference. Loss of energy , sleeping a lot , walking a lot to move gas . Things are improving day by day. No issues with drinking Water or Protein Shakes.
