Did you have to share a room in the hospital?
Well the hospital was full so I was able to get a small room in the recovery ward. It was really small but at least it had a door and when I was up all night long I wasn’t disturbing anyone else. It was pretty quiet on that ward because people usually don’t end up staying there so I practically had a nurse all to myself. I guess it kind of worked out

January surgeries?!

January surgeries?!
I had surgery yesterday. It’s been really tough. NO water, no ice chips, nothing in my mouth because I guess the doctor wants to do a test for leakage first. I’m in pain and have nausea too. Praying that today gets better.

Craving coffee ☕️
My program is NO coffee for life, it is too acidic for your new pouch. I bought Dandy Blend on Amazon which i drink every morning now. It tastes like instant coffee. Walmart also has a grain based coffee substitute which is just fine with me. I mix it with vanilla Premiere protein and its like a latte.

Sneezing and Other Weird Signs Your Pouch is Full
from another site: After surgery the Vagus Nerve, an important sensor that runs from your brain to your gut, is easily stimulated due to our altered anatomy. This nerve regulates digestion, detoxification, our “fight or flight” response, various aspects of heart rate and blood pressure and more. When it is stimulated you may have repetitive or single hiccups, sneezing, and or a runny nose. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY as this is your new warning system telling you that you are getting really close to being full! Pay close attention to not over eat past this point. This action is NOT a cue for you to take a break and then go back and finish. It means you are done.

Is anyone else having a hard time deciding what their goal weight is?
My healthy weight is 135 according to charts. The last time I weighed that much was age 21 and I remember wearing a juniors size 9 (I’m 5’8”) I think if I weighed around 140-150 I’d still look slim. That being said I’d LOVE to shoot for the moon and get down to 130-135

What does a control freak do before surgery?
I am in the same boat. I am going in next Tuesday. I have my bariatric pantry with all my protein and bone broth soups etc. I am going to get all my vitamins organized and medications all together. I have to make a daily chart which I'll be checking off water intake, protein and medication since there is SO much to track. I dont have any idea how people go back to work right away. I need to choose a few more books on Audible and have those ready to go. I really didnt want to make too many pureed soups etc because I have no idea what I'll tolerate and dont want to have gallons of pureed soup I dont like. I guess I could do a few. I need to be careful not to read too many people's experiences as it just ramps up my anxiety (what if that happens to me). I am a major control freak and it's very very hard for me not to know what to expect!! Hang in there. Pretty soon we'll be looking back on these posts as a distant memory!

How long did it take you to get your surgeries?
I made an Excel sheet and I treated it like a part time job. I spent hours on the phone scheduling and charting what I had to do. Thats the only way to do it. Get 'er done!

Did you have to share a room in the hospital?
My last surgery I had to share a room with a lady who did nothing but fart and belch constantly. I felt like I was going to be ill having to spend a day and a half with that lady. And aside from that she talked constantly even when I told her I was putting earbuds in to listen to my audio book. ugh.

How long did it take you to get your surgeries?
I guess Im lucky. I had HealthNet. I had my initial consultation in October of 2018 and completed the required testing/labs/appointments (probably 10 in all) by December of 2018. I was required to do 3 "weight management" visits with my PCP. Because of the Christmas holiday I was not able to get a surgery date in December but I am scheduled for next Tuesday 1/22. So it took about 4 months. I scheduled all my labs and specialist appointments and I really moved heaven and earth to get them all done as quickly as I could.

All that travel sounds great to me. What do you do?

50 and Up Sleevers
If I loose a little slower that’s ok. If you lose too fast you’re more likely to lose your hair!

50+
I’m 51 and I know I can do this. I think a 70 year old can be successful if they really stick to the plan

What did your hair look like when it grew back
I have fine blonde hair and Im scared to do extensions if needed because I dont want to damage the hair thats left. Did you do tape ins or clip in? Is the hair not coming out that youre attaching it to?

Did you have to share a room in the hospital?
I'm kinda freaking out because they told me I would be sharing a room in the hospital. I am deathly afraid of vomit, like it's my BIGGEST phobia!! I'm scared I'll get put in a room with another bariatric patient who may be puking in the bed next to me. If you had to share a room how was it? Was your room mate also in for gastric surgery?

Jan 2019 bypass buddies
YAY! Thats encouraging. You so often hear about all the terrible stuff after surgery. I am hoping to be like you and get through recovery without any major drama

People with no more than 100 pounds to lose
I met with my doctor yesterday. He said that I have just as good of a chance as anyone else of losing all my excess weight. In other words I don’t think that we are at a disadvantage with having less to lose. It seems that the number one factor is to follow the plan. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do that!

Check to make sure your protein is covered by insurance
Saw my doctor yesterday and he said he didn’t know he could even do that. I talk to somebody at the insurance company so I know for a fact that it is true that they cover it. I think it will save me at least a couple hundred dollars

Got my surgery date!
Congrats! It’s very exciting to finally get a date

No regrets?
I think younger people may have a harder time with it because you still may be thinking in the back of your mind that you can do it on your own. At age 50 I am absolutely positive that I’ve tried everything and that this is definitely my last resort. So any nervousness that I had is pretty much gone. I know that the worst thing that I could do is not have the surgery and continue to struggle every day with my weight. If anything I’m just excited now. 2 weeks to go!

do you tell your weight lost
If anybody probes me about how much weight I’ve lost or what I did to lose it I plan on being passive aggressive and just giving them some type of vague response like “oh you know it’s a process, we’ll see” and then just change the subject. I am not willing to discuss my weight with anybody. If they don’t get the hint then I will just have to say “ I don’t really want to discuss my weight” period!
