Discuss this with your surgeon. Extended release medications are a problem with gastric BYPASS patients as their intestinal path is shortened. Gastric SLEEVE patients have no change in their ability to absorb medications, including extended release, as these drugs are absorbed in the intestines. It sounds like your psychiatrist isn’t familiar with the difference between the different forms of bariatric surgery (which isn’t that weird, your psych probably hasn’t seen the inside of an operating room since med school). It sounds like your psychiatrist needs a consult with your surgeon regarding how your metabolism is and isn’t affected by your surgery. By the way, consults happen all the time, you wouldn’t be asking for anything out of the ordinary.

I only had anxiety (panic attacks at night) due to sleep apnea. I was prescribed Cipralex I believe it was (the generic of it was escitalopram). Once the apnea was gone didn't need it any more and have been off. My situation was a lot more straight forward. For many others, it's a lot more complicated with the brain is wired. I'd keep expectations to a minimum and just do your best.

    P.S. to my note above.
If you're going to go from rectum to vagina, peel off the condom first.
If you insist on not using condoms, at least never go from rectum to vagina without a good penis wash first.

I’m only six days out, but I don’t have any feeling of it being cut per se. However, when I consumed liquids in the first couple of days, I definitely knew there was a wall as there was a mild discomfort as the liquids were going down. I still have that feeling, but can drink much more. Not sure when it will go away.

Yeah, that does sound about right according to the literature I received from my program. How long did it take you to get the Soup down? What brand did you get? I am going with Healthwise as I tried a few samples and they were quite good.

Sleeved 12/28, down 43.5 lbs total.
Things slowed down around weeks 5-6 (I wasn't exercising, and I also went on vacation) but I've started exercising more and the scale is dropping again now. Yay.

I was fortunate to have very little pain associated with the surgery. I stopped taking any pain meds the afternoon of the surgery. I only had some complications with bleeding that would cause me to become light headed, dizzy, and faint when sitting up or standing, so my stay in the hospital was prolonged by two days. Once the bleeding stopped, I was up and moving and ready to go home.

My surgeon nicked a blood vessel to my spleen during the surgery causing this exact pain (splenic infarction) and the pain was so bad I didn't even notice any other pains from the surgery. I was in the hospital for 4 days and getting out of bed to use the bathroom was excrutiating but I did it, and tried to walk the halls a little bit each time as well. It took me almost 2 weeks of round-the-clock Oxycodone to recover from the splenic infarction, at which point my stomach was completely fine. (I'll be 3 weeks post-op tomorrow.)

Yep...agree on everything. Salads are a mainstay in my diet for the Fiber. I can't think of any veggie that has given me any sort of problem since surgery. I just followed my plan as to when I could eat certain things. As Creek said try anything new in small batches and see how it goes.

I think everyone is just different, Fluff. Best to try each new food one at a time and see how you do. I have no problems with any of the things you've listed, if that helps. That said, not much bothers me. I eat finely diced celery in my chicken salad now with no problem...which I should technically avoid....but my nutritionist said if I tolerate it well...it's healthy Fiber. Some folks do NOT tolerate fibrous foods, though, and it can mean pain for them. Go a little at a time and ease into new things.

Thank you so much for your input! I’ve been itching to reply all week but was having trouble logging on to BP.

Anyway, I decided to follow your advice and consult with my Doctor. As I said they arent as great with giving detailed information on nutrition but this time they took their time with me on the phone and explained everything. They said if I’m going to be spending more than 300-400 calories per day on exercising (and I definitely burn 2-3x that amount accordinf to my fitbit), I definitely needed to up my calories. So they cleared me for 1,600 calories when working out,140g of Protein (as long as I drink a lot of Water to protect my kidneys), and the 36g of fat but said absolutely no more than 100g of carbs/day which made a lot of sense to me. My trainer said she can work with that. I’m going to try it for a week and see how that goes but will follow your advice and monitor closely. If I start to gain weight I’ll go back to Keto for sure.

Per my RD, while on the liquid stage, there is no reason to differential between Protein Drinks and non-protein liquids. They all add to your total liquid goal. Also, no need to wait 30 minutes before or after until you get to the puree stage. Maybe that will help you?

I guess I'll ask for more clarification from my surgeon but it does look like there's a lot of different thoughts on this stuff. But again, does this mean that I just need to power through and diet like I would have before the surgery? If that's the case what was the point of the surgery? The metabolic advantage?

Good points. Mine was a week after yours. I desperately want to be successful. I've upped my Water intake to see if that helps. Are you meeting your water goals?
