I am disabled and limited in exercise options. What I did is get a script for PT to show me exercises and moves that I could safely do at home without further injuring myself. As I progressed, I did the same.
With the sleeve, I've gone from about 275# to 119# this morning. I've been maintaining since 2013.

I had the gastric sleeve and am disabled. I did not exercise and lost 131lbs the first year by sticking to the plan. I did however have to revise due to GERD last year.

Thank you so much this really helped me feel more confident about continuing the process towards the weight loss surgery. I can definitely do Water aerobics it’s just hard for me to be able to get to the pool most days I might consider getting one of those therapy pools that could fit in to my Florida room.

yes - I know of several people who did with with little to no exercise. Like NovaLuna said above weight loss is 80% diet, so you'll be able to lose quite a bit of weight even if you can't exercise.

I did very little exercise while in the weight loss phase because I needed a hip replacement and could barely walk. I had my hip replacement when I was about 130 lbs ( 2 yrs ago today!) I can now walk as far as I want to and have no problem maintaining my weight at 108 lbs. I had the gastric bypass. I walk every day and have no problem doing 6-7 miles.

While I didn't have the gastric sleeve specifically (my surgery has a VSG stomach, but it also has the intestinal bypass bit because it's the Loop Duodenal Switch/SADI-S/SIPS) I AM disabled due to two back injuries and osteoarthritis in my knees, back, hips, ankles, etc. that make it to where I can't really exercise. I was told that weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise and after having lost a grand total of 204 pounds (136 pounds of that since my surgery. The other 68 pounds was my monitored weight loss before my surgery) I agree with that statement. I WISH that I was more mobile because I KNOW I would have lost more, but I'm incredibly happy with my results. I mean, I'd like to lose the last 5 pounds to my goal weight, but if I hit maintenance I'd be okay where I'm at (lost 1 pound this month after a 30-odd day stall. Lost 4 pounds last month and 1 the month before that after a 30 day stall. I'm getting closer and closer to maintenance, I think).

Is anyone that is disabled get the gastric sleeve and lost a lot of weight without having to exercise too much I talk to my surgeon about my disability and I can’t really walk or stand or anything for too long and I was worried that I would be wasting my time getting the surgery and not lose any weight but he encouraged me that he has patients that can’t exercise and they’ve lost weight so I just want someone to confirm that this is possible.

Thank you so much! I will keep in mind for sure of everything I eat and thank you for being proud of me. Most of my family could care less. Basically the only support I had was my husband. Everyone else was like that's good or didn't say a dang word at all. All I wanted was one wow after Everyone saw me. Now my goal is to hit 299 then 250 and so on. I am doing it for me and my kids.

My first post to this forum and I'm grateful I found you.
My surgeon does Band to Bypass in two steps. I had my band removed about two months ago. Except for tugging on a stitch I didn't know was there and having that hurt bad, it went smoothly. Four days ago I went in for step two... RNY.
I was told in advance that there was about 20% chance that adhesions from a prior surgery (colon resection) might prevent the doc from pulling up the small intestine to meet the stomach. Imagine my surprise when I woke up and the nurse handed me ice Water to drink. I knew I didn't have the bypass. Why?
Holy Can of Worms Batman! I'm still waiting to get photographs from the doctor since I barely remember seeing them in post op but my initial Band Surgeon (Dr. Kuri in TJ) something "EXTREMELY" rare. (yup, my doc replied in caps to that) When I had the band in 2004 he said he put an extra stitch in to avoid slippage. I'm not sure what I have yet but apparently it was to dangerous to fix. I know there were stitches the doctor couldn't see when he removed the band and that my stomach is in the wrong place and he couldn't fix it.
I've tried contacting Dr. Kuri just to find out what his technique was called or if my doc could talk to him or something. No such luck.
My stomach is in knots in every way possible. I'm hoping to find out more about Dr. Kuri's surgical technique around 2004. Staff non-responsive so far.

My surgeon explained it to me that the issue is that if the liver is still too fatty after the pre-op diet it's just impossible to lift up the liver to do the bypass. My bloods b4 the pre-op diet showed that my liver was very fatty and so I had to do the pre-op diet for 18 days beforehand rather than 14. The nutritionist's diet sheet included carbs, so I didn't go into ketosis as some people do.
So, I'll be honest, I was hungry most of the time, but I did what all the other posters here did and drank plenty & filled up on veggies. I managed to stick to it simply because it was so time limited. I knew it was only for 18 days and the surgeon had told me of one patient who he'd opened up but whose liver was still too fatty to move, so he'd had to sew him back up again without doing it and I was determined not to let that happen if I could help it.
Just focus on the fact that it's only for a very short period of time. The hunger is good - you're losing weight and visceral fat. You can do it!

Right before my revision surgery, I questioned why I had to adhere so strictly to the preop diet (especially since I was at my goal weight)
I was told that not only does the pre-op diet reduce the fat in the abdominal cavity making it easier to navigate during surgery, but it also reduces any fat remaining inside the liver. They took preventative measure for better surgical outcomes.
The liver is one of the organs that must be lifted in order to reach the digestive track. If it has too much fat, it is not pliable and becomes prone to injuries like tears, scaring and even breaking.
My surgeon asked me to imagine a marbled steak as opposed to a leaner steak. The fat filled areas of the steak will tear easier that the purely muscular areas.

After that conversation I (begrudgingly) complied with the pre-op diet.

Here’s the thing: the pre-op diet also serves as mental prep for after surgery. While your stomach is healing, you have to adhere to your surgeon’s instructions perfectly. Weeks or months of liquid/pureed/soft foods.

I think there is a real advantage going into the surgery already in ketosis. It took me a good 3 or 4 day to get there but I made sure I did not add in any carbs during the pre surgery liquid diet. I had headaches the first three day of the liquid diet but I'm relieved that I won't be going through carb withdrawal right after surgery.

For what it’s worth, my doctor said he could tell that I did really well on the pre op diet (guess my liver was really small) and I didn’t have any pain post op. I like to think it was cause the liver was shrunk down and out of the way he had a lot more room to move around in there and I didn’t get bruised inside from them trying to retract things to make room?? Perhaps if you think of it that way it will help you stick to it.

Catwoman is 100% correct. Once you get a few days in it will get easier. Sounds weird but it will. Drink broth. It’s warm and filling when you’re hungry. To be successful you need to commit to this. We have all had to do this so I’m speaking from experience. You can do this too!
One last piece of advice. Don’t put yourself in the same room as people eating things you will want. When my kids and husband would come home and eat I’d simple go into my bedroom w my liquid of choice and stay in there until they were done. I did that so I wouldn’t smell, see or make myself ravenous w the food being around. You can do this. Set yourself up to succeed. Don’t put yourself in situations of temptation.
YOU CAN DO THIS!! Keep us updated. I wish you success.

it's a challenge -- but most of us are required to do it. You just have to white knuckle it. I never cheated. It was hard, but I powered through it, as I suspect the majority do. Yes - some people have reported here that they cheated once or twice - but I didn't want to go down that rabbit hole. I don't know how much better it is if you have a couple of "cheats", since you have to be on the diet for 14 days, so you're still going to have many days where you're going to have to deal with the diet and the hunger. That is, unless you "cheat" every day (or most days), which defeats the purpose and can cause your surgery to be canceled.
I never thought I'd be able to do it, but I did it. It gets a lot easier by day 3 or 4, when your body gets into ketosis. And that's another issue - I'm not sure your body is going to go into ketosis if you cheat. So you'll be dealing with hunger the whole two weeks.
there's nothing you can really do to prepare except to stock up on things you're going to need. In my case, it was sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, chicken broth, Tomato juice/V8, and lots of clear no-cal (or ultra-low-cal) beverages, like Crystal Light.
the thing I kept in mind is that if I could do this, I could definitely handle any of the post-op diet requirements.

I had to get myself away from artificial sweeteners too. Before the WLS I was addicted to diet coke. I weaned myself off of it a few months before the surgery. Now I wouldn't even try to take a sip of it. I was so afraid I would crave it, and I honestly don't.

That's what I like to hear, you don't miss it. When I was off sugar except for natural sugar in an occasional piece of fruit, I did not miss it. I eat sweet stuff more often now, and I have to make myself not give in too often. I'm logging again and my sugar grams per day are sometimes single digit! Thank you!

Just got back from my sons wedding. We had a nice time. Lots of comments that I am too thin and don't need to lose anymore weight. I am weighing the same as I did all last summer and into this past Feb, before Covid .
