The GERD/acid reflux is the reason the Bariatric surgeon would not do the sleeve on me. I had the Gastric Bypass and my GERD/acid reflux is 100% gone.

I had my stomach stapled in 1991 and lost maybe 40 lbs. It wasn't worth it...now I am going to have an RNY soon, I hope, and I'm a little nervous. I gained back all my weight from the stapling, and I'm worried it will happen again. Did anyone else feel this way?

I had the band done in 2009- I lost 40pds but gained back 10-15 up and down- it was awful the band was never right either too tight or too loose- I just had a band to sleeve revision done- the band is such a failure I didn't think a lot of doctors still would suggest it

10 days is way too long for a BM. Please use an enema, suppository, milk of magnesia.. something to get things moving.

Jengo825 reacted to JohnnyCakes in What made you choose RNY over the sleeve?
to answer your first question - yes, we do. when people pop off at the mouth spreading false information to prospective patients for no reason, it's definitely something to get worked up over. a skilled surgeon can reverse an RNY. a back-alley Mexican chop-shop probably can't. but again, the RNY is such a superior procedure it is virtually never even ASKED FOR, much less done. compare that to the constant flood of sleeve patients who have to have revision surgery to.... you guessed it.... RNY.
second question - yes, ghrelin reduces with bypass. one study showed it reduced MORE than the sleeve.

It'll get better, one day at a time! I also had GERD, Lapband revision with Gastric bypass - NO reflux or symptoms of it since, praise the Lord! We're going to have better results than we imagined!

This makes me so happy to read. I just had band to bypass on 9/11. One week out and I feel physically okay, but depressed and nervous.

and millions of people who DON’T get gastric bypass also get skin-and-bones emaciated.
the surgery is no guarantee of life perfection. mental issues, eating disorders, economic challenges, drug abuse, other illnesses like cancer...... plenty other reasons that might have happened.

When you say more time on the table, do you mean time to eat? I have 20 minutes to eat. Do not drink 30 minutes before or after. That's the hard part! As far as Vitamins, my Bariatric dietitians said it has to have 19+ nutrients on the label and 18 mcg Iron 2x day. They recommend chewable. There are many that you can buy online but don't all have those specifications and are expensive. I have Flintstones Complete. For my Calcium, I have to take chewable (not gummy) calcium "citrate" 500 3x/day. The citrate absorbs better. I purchased Bariatric Advantage strawberry (many other flavors) at the hospital but you can purchase online. Bariatric Pal and Amazon might also have them. I look forward to taking them believe it or not! Kinda like Starburst! I'm not sure about dumping. All I know is that I never ever want it! I had enough pain from my Lapband. You may be able to have a few bites of something sweet down the road but not sure. Ask your doc. I am hoping to use natural sweetners to make something sweet but not sure when/if I can. I'm only 3 weeks out now and believe me..... I don't even crave sweets one little bit. I'm not hungry. During the surgery, the part of the stomach where ghrelin (hunger hormone) is stored is detached. It works! I hope this helps you some!

Jengo825 got a reaction from OmaJ in Trying to decide if I should just remove my band, or convert
First of all best of luck on your revision surgery! You are absolutely doing the right getting rid of the band. It will only get worse with time. I am having my lapband converted to RNY in July also. after 6.5 years I couldn't stand the pain and had to eat a "bunch" of Tums to only sometimes ease the horrid pain that would last for hours. This happened nearly every time I ate. I am also scared and very nervous going through this as an "older" woman. An EGD showed inflammation that nearly closed the opening from pouch to stomach, gastritis and esophagitis. The UGI showed the barium not going through well, a band slip and a flipped port! Oh, and I've had the night coughing for years since the band. I HATE this thing! My Dr. Said that 95% of band patients that have had them removed with no revision gained 100%* of their weight back. This was a non-starter for me. I originally asked for a sleeve but the gastric reflux that I developed after the band would get worse so the Dr. recommended RNY. I am on Medicare. The Dr.'s insurance girl said they would pay because it has made me so sick I must have it removed and I guess they've paid before in these instances. If they don't, they don't. I can't live like this anymore.

My first pic is just after surgery cause I didn't have any before good ones.

Started at 237 and that was heaviest.
Surgery was 4/11/17 I didn't have to do preop diet cause I needed to maintain.
2nd pic is 7/25/17. 60 lbs down weighing in last week at 177.

I want to be somewhere between 150-140.

Strained Soups were considered full liquids for me which was technically phase 2. Clear (3 days), Full (1.5 weeks), Pureed(2-3 weeks), Soft Solids(4-5 weeks), Regular (8+ weeks on) is how my diet went.

Your steps are different than mine. Our step two is anything that can fit through a solid mesh strainer. It is pretty much creamed Soups, baby food and Jello for me. I was told meats I would not be able to get down until 4 weeks or so. The 2 pounds is probably just Fluid. Our natural weights are constantly adjusting. I would not imagine it is fat. You would have had to consume 7k calories to have gained 2 pounds.

    Oops, pressed send by accident!

Don't be afraid. I feel so much better and The surgery wasn't bad. I was off pain meds the day I got home. Getting rid of that Lapband that did so many complications was the best thing ever to do and I no longer live in pain or suffer with GERD. Best of luck to you!

to answer your question, CLEARLY you should have had RNY from the beginning. that question has answered itself! the LapBand has been proven so ineffective that it's barely done anymore. and I predict that in 5 years, doctors won't touch the sleeve either because SO many patients (like you) suffer debilitating GERD.
let me try to address the fears you listed one by one:
    1. i'm afraid i'll never have an ice cream cone again - in my opinion, if the occasional ice cream cone holds that much power over you, you have other food addiction problems you need to address. first of all, dumping is rare in RNY patients. usually around 25% experience it ever. and a lot people who experience it LIKE it because it keeps them off the sweets and avoids regain (something that sounds like it might benefit you too). i have never experienced dumping. and i have no desire whatsoever to eat ice cream. zero. last night there was an interesting dessert placed in front of me at a restaurant. i had a bite purely out of curiosity, enjoyed it, and didn't need/want anymore. best of all worlds if you ask me.
    2. i'm afraid of Vitamin deficiencies - again, this does not happen to everyone. it doesn't even happen to the majority of people who don't take the prescribed vitamins!!! your doctor will definitely tell you to take a Multivitamin for the rest of your life as INSURANCE that it will never happen. but - and this is important - that doesn't mean it's guaranteed to happen if you don't take Vitamins. it's still rare. but it is a small risk. so, take a damn vitamin! it's not that bloody hard! it boggles my mind that people who have been heavy their entire lives and suffered thru all that entails can then turn around and whine about having to take a pill everyday. jesus...
    3. i fear i won't be a blessing to stop losing weight. - please tell me of any instance, ever... on this website or elsewhere, that someone has gotten RNY and wasted away to anorexia-like emaciation. IT. DOESN'T. HAPPEN. yes you will lose more than the sleeve and a lot more than the lapland. but your weight loss will stop at a healthy level. because your body will tell you (and allow you) to eat more when you reach that level.
in less than two months after my bypass surgery, the thing that i marveled at most was how NORMAL i feel. like... the surgery never even happened. i eat the same whole-food, delicious, paleo-style diet i ate before my surgery. can tolerate virtually any food (even beef and salad). i just eat a little less. and I'm rarely hungry and have great energy. no nausea. no throwing up. no GERD. no dumping.
please take this website for what it is... a place for people to come and complain and make things into a lot bigger deal than they are. the chances are very high that you will turn out just like me and MOST patients of RNY. just fine. BETTER than fine. amazing actually. i mean, life can't get any worse than what you're going thru, right? so you have to look forward to more weight loss and the complete remission/curing of your GERD problems. what is there to be afraid of? i'd be running towards the hospital right now if i were you!

I'm not a big banana fan either, but a friend gave me 2 of the banana cream, and rather than waste it, this made it not as ick to me. chocolate is my favorite so far, and I think I'm going to try the Jello sugar-free cheesecake flavor with the vanilla. That ought to be good : )

On making Protein pudding...I buy whatever sugar free flavor of store brand, or Jello brand pudding I like. Then I add the Protein Shake instead of milk, to the instant mix. A small box takes 2 cups of milk, so I use a full Premier Protein, and then the balance in non-fat milk, whisk it up, pop it into a container and into fridge for atleast 10 min. Overnight is better, as it gives a smoother texture. I've done Choc pudding with choc protein, vanilla pudding with banana cream protein, and vanilla with vanilla pudding
I love the chocolate, and a little serving works wonders...YUM!

I had been trying for nearly my who life to get the weight off. I had taken so many different medications, trainers, gym visits, shakes, and Protein and on and on. As a healthcare worker, I knew that if I didn't get the weight off soon I would end up with much more serious issues. In addition, I wanted to be able to do things that I hadn't been able to do because of my weight - travel, zip line, horseback riding, fly in a plane and fasten the seat belt comfortably and many other things. I also starting feeling that perhaps my weight was limiting me from potential job promotions and even dating. I finally spoke with my doctor and she agreed it was time to do something more aggressive. During my 6 month surgery preparation I developed high blood pressure and was placed on blood pressure medication. It was finally catching up to me - I knew that I had made the right decision to move forward with the surgery and that once I could get the weight off, my blood pressure would get better.

No good advice here. I eat fast always have. I like my food super hot, so that is how it is.

If you are weighing and measuring your portions before you eat it shouldn't matter if you eat fast.
