I just had surgery at OCC with Dr Ortez on Tuesday. Everything was 5*. Look him up! He is in Tijuana. I'm heading home tomorrow and couldn't be happier to start my new journey!

I am 23 days post op. I too have had the same pain as described. The first two weeks it was excruciatingly painful. To the point it would make me cry. I still cannot bend at the waist,or lay on either side of my stomach without severe pain. It has got "slightly" better over the last 4 days but I am worried to return to work because it hurts to sit in a 90 degree position which I do all day at my job. I see my surgeon today to see what is going on.

Rowvin reacted to Apple1 in I am I crazy for considering surgery
This is my first post. I will try not to write a book. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize.
I have been researching the gastric sleeve surgery for a while now. At my last doctor appointment in December, with my endocrinologist, he suggested that it could be an option for me because I have uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. To be honest I dismissed it right away because I was embarrassed that I would even qualify for weight loss surgery. At that time I weighed 248 BMI 36.5 and my A!C was 11.2. Since then I have been doing my best to eat low carb and get my diabetes under control. I also have hashimotos thyroid and this makes losing weight even harder. I have managed to lose 22 pounds in the past 4 months and have hit a wall. I always hit a wall and I am tired of being frustrated. I have lost and gained the same 25-30 pounds for the past 6 years and added dealing with type 2 diabetes 3 years ago. I am already taking metformin and Victoza and my doctor said if I can't get my A1c down insulin is my nest step. My ideal weight is 145 and I feel like I will never get there on my own.
Am I crazy to be thinking about going to Mexico to have gastric sleeve surgery? My current BMI is 32 with the 22 pounds I lost so my insurance won't cover the surgery. They said I have to have at least 35 BMI and then with my type 2 they would approve me. I am not going to gain weight just to qualify for surgery. I have made some progress on my own, but I really want the help that this surgery could give me as well as the likely-hood that my diabetes would improve greatly.

I am looking for advice from anyone in a similar situation that chose surgery. Are you happy with your decision?
    Thank you.

Has anyone gotten a breast reduction after their surgery ? I went to see a plastic surgeon for a lift and was informed if I get a reduction it would be covered 100% by my insurance . They automatically do a lift with a reduction which is much needed after losing 85 pounds with my sleeve. I have plenty to spare so I am considering it . Can anyone share their experiences or offer any advice ?

Just wanted to follow up and share what my doctor said. They put a stitch inside and sometimes there can be some nerve entrapment as it heals, causing the pain I described. He prescribed heat, which I have been doing, and Flexeril, which I am about to try. I will report back as to the efficacy.

I am 11 days post sleeve and my pain was getting much better, I could even lay on my side with a pillow pressed against my stomach. Starting yesterday the area under the incision (not the incision itself, the muscles underneath) began to feel extremely painful, making it difficult to move. This feels like a step backwards. This pain takes my breath away. Is this normal or should I call my surgeon's office?

I'm 4 months post op, and this is the info my NUT gave me for what I should aim for as far as nutrition. I am usually right within these numbers.
Calories: between 800-1000 calories per day
Carbs: recommendations are 90 grams per day for patients 6 months post-op and 130 grams per day for patients greater than 1 year post-op. So I would say between 60 and 90 grams per day for you.
Fat: between 25 and 30 grams per day (mostly from healthy fats)
Protein: goal is a minimum of 65-70 grams per day
Sodium: less than 2000 mg per day
Sugar: less than 6 grams of sugar per serving (so if you are eating 3 meals per day, then you want to keep total sugars below 18 grams)

Hello dearest Queen. Lovely to see a post from you. You were my greatest inspiration when I was a newbie and I devoured your book with great gusto so that I could have a hint of what my weight loss journey could be like. It should be required reading for all the newly sleeved as it is just simple common sense from front cover to back. Oh yes, and humour, which always makes things that much more enjoyable.
I'm now in the maintaining camp having had my surgery 18 months ago at the age of 58. I reckon that the really hard work starts once the main bulk has left your frame and the maintenance has to become part of every day life. It's hard sometimes. Worth it though.
I walk 6-7 miles with my dogs every day, loving every step of it. I do two ballet classes every week with a teacher who taught me when I was a professional dancer. Although I take it a lot easier and don't have the ability (or the suppleness or strength) to get my legs up around my ears I can quite happily move my normal weight body around the moves. The thought of even trying to do that with all the pre-sleeve excess weight just doesn't bear thinking about! I couldn't have done it.
As far as I'm concerned, it's never too late to start an active life so bariatric surgery in later life is one of the most wonderful options open to those of us who wake up one day and find, to our horror, that all those random extra ounces that were slowly creeping onto our frames have turned into serious poundage!

You won't feel any restriction on liquids...they don't 'fill' your sleeve. You'll feel it when you start eating dense Protein.< br /> You're able to take in more liquid as time goes by because the swelling in your sleeve is going down.
And no, liquids don't/won't/can't stretch your sleeve

I lost quickly the first 5 weeks and entering 6th week to about the 9th week I lost very very very slowly... then out of no where I started losing again! Don't get discouraged, you're probably not doing anything wrong. It's just your body trying to adjust. Had surgery Feb 17th and down 60lbs

I'd agree to contact your surgeon. I'm 9 days out and just today realized I could take a bigger sip than I normally could a few days ago. I think it may have caused you some extra gas but to be on the safe side, especially since your in pain, contact your surgeon.
I've forgotten to take mine antacid as well a few days back. The Doc told me to take it now so I did. Not too much pain for the additional meals.

Rowvin reacted to MSinger in Gastric sleeve as outpatient?
Hello all, I found out through my insurance that they will only approve VSG as an outpatient surgery going forward. They used to approve 1day inpatient at the same time as the surgery review. I'm feeling nervous as I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to go home on the day of surgery, plus, when I spoke with my surgeon he told me to expect a 2 day inpatient stay and that he usually does not find himself discharging patients on POD1.
Like most people, I've read case after case of VSG surgeries and I have yet to come across a person who went home the same day. My impression was 1 day inpatient was reasonable, and of course I'd understand staying inpatient for a second night if my pain or nausea was out of control, or I was not tolerating fluids.
Has anyone done VSG as an outpatient? If you stayed inpatient, how did you feel right after surgery? Did you feel like you can go home that night?

Hang in there. I'm 7 days post op and the liquid diet sucked for the first 5 or so days. After that, I felt great, had a ton of energy and wasn't even hungry. It'll get better.

I know exactly how you feel! I'm the same. The only way I've been able to cope is by reading the successful posts on line. This helps me soooo much and turns my negative thoughts into positive. Mine isn't until the 26th, but I'm already having sleepless nights scared and anxious. But you can do this. Change is difficult... but this is going to be a magnificent change to our lives. We just need to focus on how much better our health will be. Wishing you all the very best xx
