Well I'm a nurse at a hospital in Alabama and I work with about ten other nurses that have had wls. You are right when you say people will judge. One of my close coworkers had it and has yet to tell anyone. We know because of the way she eats now and the weight coming off so quickly after going to Mexico.
I've just been honest about mine. I needed to gain some. I had one person be almost mad about it. My boss said your gonna gain weight and then not qualify anyway... lol... wow. Way to be supportive. I have experienced a lot of support though. I decided that even if it meant taking some heat I was going to talk about my experience. I'm having serious health issues. Everyone of my family is a diabetic but me and I'm headed that way and already have sleep apnea GURD and high blood pressure and cholesterol. I'm 51. I don't want to waist anymore of my life wishing to be thin and if I could do it by myself I wouldn't be overweight to begin with now would I?

Great post. I have the same exact problem and I had it prior to my surgery as well. Back in 2014 I was diagnosed with Achalasia which means my espahagus is nothing more than a dead tube. Because of this condition I had horrible heartburn but didn't know it because I couldn't feel it. I developed a hernia and my (bariatric) surgeon repaired the hernia and cut my lower esophagus sphincter to allow food to simply drop from my "dead tube" into my stomach. But.... without the reflux medicine I would get the foamies and I would have food kinda get stuck and have to bring it back up often. And when I'd bring it up it felt like a mucus ball.. I know it's gross but it's annoying too.
So now, after a second hernia repair and bariatric surgery last month I am noticing that that problem is still here if I stop taking the reflux medicine. Which if I understood things correctly I thought the full surgery would eliminate my need to take the medicine and suffer any gerd.
I'm sorry you're having this issue but I'm kinda relieved I'm not crazy.

First. 93 lbs is AMAZING! Whatever you do, DO NOT ignore that amazing feat right there!
Now, a little tip that a LOT of people miss out on. Muscle building. Larger muscles require more energy at rest than small muscles do. Cardio is great, but it's only going to do so much, because those muscles aren't needing anything more (and weighing 93 lbs less means you are working a LOT less to do the same cardio) Try to do some muscle building on your gluts and quads as well as your triceps (which are around 3 times larger than biceps but most people forget to work them out). Add some muscle building to your work out and you should start seeing more fat / weight coming off. Just remember, the larger the muscle, the more fuel it needs. You might see some weight gain due to muscle mass, but as long as you keep up your intake routine, those numbers will start to drop again. Muscle does weigh more than fat as well. But you have done amazing. Don't stress too much!

    Congrats on getting a date!
I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to ask you why you're taking the time, as long as you say it's a medical issue, I'd think you would be fine, they may ask for proof, in which case you have your Doctor give you something and that should be more than enough.
You could also tell your direct supervisor or HR rep and make sure they handle it with discretion, or else.
    Good Luck!

So excited that I've finally gotten scheduled for surgery may 12! I can't believe it. I was getting so discouraged because it had take so long!
Now I'm trying to decide what to say at work. I'm getting surgery.. just leave it at that...? Really it's no ones business but being a nurse I worry they will try to ask me to put surgery off... they've not done that to anyone else though. I should be good since I have enough PTO

Omg overalls!!! My husband ADORED how I looked in overalls (when I was 13 to 15 before I got big). He's expressed missing it and wanting me to get another pair, but not only do they not make sizes big enough for me, but I know it will look horrible on my current body shape and would just be a disappointment for him.

wareaglex5 reacted to RickM in DS vs Sleeve
One can make a good argument in either direction. I went with the sleeve because I was at a similar low 40s BMI at surgery time but without the diabetes. Further, I had already lost about a third of what I needed to lose while my wife went through her DS and effectively worked myself into a WLS maintenance lifestyle, maintaining what I had lost for several years, so I didn't feel that I needed the extra kicker on regain resistance that the DS provides. So far, so good after six years.

wareaglex5 reacted to RickM in DS vs Sleeve
From a strictly weight loss perspective, there is a lot of overlap between the two, with the DS being better for those starting in the higher BMI ranges. The sleeve works well in the moderate BMI ranges (35-50) and also works well above that with somewhat more intensive dieting and greater discipline needed in the long term. The DS is stronger in regain resistance than any of the other mainstream procedures, so is particularly good for those with long term yo yo dieting patterns.
From a diabetes perspective, the sleeve is similar to the bypass, with remission/resolution rates of around 85%, while the DS typically sees 98-99% rates. This should not be overly surprising as the DS started as a procedure specifically targeting diabetes, to which the VSG was added to make it a WLS procedure. Longer term, the sleeve is still relatively new with only some five year data available for any kind of significant patient populations. There are some indications of somewhat significant recurrance after five years, though it is not clear how well correlated that may be with whatever regain problems some may be having. The DS does seem to show more significant staying power in the face of regain, which in itself is less of a problem due to the long term malabsorption, compared to the VSG or RNY
Note that this only applies to the "classic" DS and not the newer SIPS/SADI/"loop DS" which is a different procedure for which there is little long term data.
There is a fair bit of experience that indicates that the longer one has been diabetic, the longer it takes to knock it out even with the DS. My wife had been under treatment for it for some twenty years when she had her DS and it took the better part of a year for her to be off of all meds for it. Others, even long termers, will walk out of the hospital free of meds with either the sleeve or the DS - YMMV. She is still off of all diabetes meds after twelve years.
My feeling is that for a younger patient, particularly one whose obesity problem is only "moderate" in WLS terms can do very well with just the sleeve, particularly if they concentrate on learning long term weight control. If necessary in the future, a move to completing the DS (which is based upon the VSG so one is half way there already,) if the diabetes comes back again can be done. Last year at one of our support group meetings i was chatting with a gal who was some 25 years out on a RNY and by all measures has been successful in her weight maintenance until some of life's stresses hit a few years ago and brought on some regain (not the total regain we sometimes read about,) - enough to bring her diabetes out of remission, so she was lining up to get that revised to a DS to knock it out again (she would have done the DS originally had it been available then.)
All of these procedures can give you something of a "do over" and let you start relatively fresh, but one has to take that opportunity to learn how to manage oneself in the long term and not go back to whatever got us here in the first place. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

I just use a kind of weight watcher diet. I use mostly weight watcher friendly recipes. I'm 10 or so months out and down a total of 236 from the 6 months pre and then post op. I don't restrict my carbs because that's not a diet I can do long term.

Hi Wareaglex5, we may be similar in BMI and why we are getting the sleeve done. My consult was done over the phone. I am cash pay, traveling about 6 1/2 hours to Louisiana to have my surgery with Dr. Borland. There are a lot or pre op test that I have to get done where I live and then have the results faxed to his office within 30 days of my surgery, which is scheduled for April 11th. I am very nervous and excited. Like so many others on the board, I have struggled with the yo-yo.
A deciding factor for me, was to hear my 70 year old mother constantly talk about her weight and how much she would like to have the WLS. I am almost 40 and do not want to wait any longer. I would like to permanently lose 55 pounds.
