Yvette804 reacted to Frenchie1977 in Complications from advancing diet too soon
So I just read yet another post about someone advancing their diet on their own too soon. This one from someone 4 days post op advancing to broccoli Soup. Probably won't kill them but it could. Then of course we get the irresponsible follow up poster saying that they too advanced their diet on their own way early and explored all kinds of foods and as long as their stomach tolerates it they see no problem with it.
Now I'm getting super frustrated, I had to put my two cents in. And perhaps I was harsh. But I watched someone die 4 years ago from doing just this.
My x mother in law had gastric sleeve surgery. At less than two weeks post op she started eating tidbits of foods she was not supposed to have, turkey, stuffing, ham, chicken in very small bites and yes chewed very well. All that didn't matter. She was fine at first. In fact showed no symptoms for days. Then she became extremely ill, with pain and fever. She had a leak which had to be repaired by surgery. After surgery she developed a serious infection and a fistula which led to the outside of her stomach. Everything she tried to drink seeped outside her stomach onto a large padded napkin that she held up to the opening of that fistula. They could not get the infection under control. They fought it for three months with the best antibiotics they had. Eventually she became septic, her organs began to fail and she passed away.
I am only 4 weeks post op VSG, you better believe I thought long and hard about having the same surgery that she had. But I can also say that I have followed my an to the T, with the exception of drinking coffee which I discussed with my surgeon beforehand.
When are people going to realize that following their diet is serious. And more so when are these idiots going to stop coming on and saying things like it's ok to explore foods early as long as you tolerate them!!!! My mother in law tolerated those foods just fine for damn near a week before she finally showed the signs of a serious leak.
Your prescribed diet plan after major stomach surgery is not just a guideline that they want you to follow so you can lose weight. It's a prescription that really can mean life or death, I've seen it with my own eyes.
    Ugggggh sooooooo frustrated!!!!!!!

I am so happy today I was sleeved this time last year on this day at 387 pounds and felt like I was headed to my death bed if I didn't make some changes. This is by far the best decision I have ever made for myself. I hit onederland (199) today as well and have surpassed all of my surgeons expectations. That is a total weight loss of 188 pounds and from a size 32 to a 14 in 1 year never thought I would see the scale for myself under 200 again. I feel great I exercise everyday and I am not dying of starvation! LOL! The best part is I think for the 1st time in my adult life I am truly happy and not just hiding behind a smile.

I am in the pre-surgery phase. I've lost 120, 100, and 170 pounds in my life through good diet and exercise. Every time, the weight loss itself was relatively easy, but I absolutely couldn't keep it off.
My doctor said the current thinking is people have between a 2-4% chance of keeping off weight they lose on their own. So while you're thinking you could have just done a low calorie diet without surgery and lost weight, you're probably right. But it very likely would come back and then some.
I'm not doing the surgery to help me lose weight. That's the easy part for me. I'm trying to give myself better odds than a lousy 2-4% to maintain my weight loss. It'll still be a lot of work, but I feel like at least I'll have a fighting chance.

Yvette804 reacted to Djmohr in Need guidance transitioning out of LB jeans. Who is comparable?
For me, I could not get out of them fast enough. About 6 months post op I walked into a Lucky Brand Jean store thinking I would just try a pair for fun and was shocked when I found that a 14 was too big and had to move to a 12 and then ultimately an 8.
They are the only jeans I buy. They are soft, and have movement to them. the more you wear them, the softer they get.
I was thrilled to cut up my Lane Bryant card. I still get mail from them and love to run it through the shredder. LOL

One size fits all... Interesting. I have seen many like you who eat everything in moderation, and they aren't attacked. I fall in the moderate carb (eat whole fruits and sometimes whole grains) vs low carb, and no one attacks me. Discussions, debates are always welcomed here. It's the self created drama that is not. If you get my drift...

    Wait, whuuuuuuut?

There is a BIG difference between creating your own path by eating what you choose to eat on/off plan both pre and post op and eating something that could potentially cause serious health risks 3 or 5 days post op.
I really don't give a rat's patoot if you choose to eat a cupcake, a pizza, a taco or an entire pan of brownies if you so desire once you are cleared for all foods. That said, I am certainly not going to help you justify that behavior, especially if you know it's a poor choice and you are looking for permission to make said choices.

If you are on liquids or mushies and eating pork chops and swedish fish and come here looking for validation or a stamp of approval? It's probably not going to happen.
If it's working for you, AWESOME! I can make poor choices, too, at 3.5 years out because I learned good habits along the way by sticking to my doc's PRESCRIBED diet.
But that's just me. It says so in my signature.
