I'm 5 months post op gastric bypass. I do go out to eat but I make smart choices like salad, chicken, Soup. Lite choices on the menu. At this stage I couldn't eat something "bad" I don't have the room in my pouch. Also I'm trying to teach myself not to think of food as a reward. I know when I get to maintenence I can ocassionally have a bite of something off of my plan. I was and still am a food adict. I will always have to be careful not to fall back into that behavior. My brain is a fat girl brain in a thinner body. Surgery can't change that.

I brought my mother to the information seminar that doctors held once a month for prospective patients. she was able to hear the information and statistics from the doctor directly and ask questions. It helped relieve a lot of her concerns. Maybe your mother would agree to go and listen?
PS. I'm not a kid, I'm quite middle aged - still need Mom

I eat every 2 to 3 hours. It isn't grazing because all my portions are measure and accounted for.
You posted your calories and not your Protein. If you are eating 900 calories a day but your Protein is over 90 grams, there is nothing wrong with that.
Eating in the 1000 calorie range is not going to stop you from losing fast, but if you are getting most of those calories from carbs, that will stop you from losing fast.
Also at this point for you, all the nerves are not reconnected to your stomach. It is hard I think to understand this post-op, but when they do reconnect you know the difference. My Dr explained it to me so I understood it. And you can't eat anything that is dense right now. When you get to the point you can eat solid forms of protein, you won't want to or be able to graze. If I have a steak or a pork chop, it legit takes a solid 2 hours or more for me to want to eat again, that fullness/tension from eating dense protein lasts a long time.
Focus on getting your protein in, and don't worry about the calories. The sooner you get off starvation level calories, the better.

I don't avoid fat other than trans fats, and I make sure I eat at least one meal a day with a minimum of 10 grams of fat -- I take my Vitamins with that meal, as many vitamins are not properly absorbed without fat. I do eat some pretty high fat foods such as avocados, eggs, nuts (small amounts) and fatty fish, but as long as I stay within my calories for the day I don't care. My cholesterol and triglyceride numbers are always fantastic so I think I must be doing something right.
As far as carbs go, when I was in weight loss mode, I kept carbs under 60 grams per day. I don't count carbs anymore now that I am in maintenance (well, MFP counts them for me but I don't even look at the number). However, my carbs tend to stay in the low range naturally as I eat a lower-carb diet in maintenance: no more than one serving of whole grains per day (no refined grains), no bread, no sweets, no starchy veggies, no tropical fruit, no alcohol, and modest amounts of dairy, Beans, and legumes.
This eating plan works well for me.

I don't avoid fat unless it is manufactured fats like cooking oils , margarine etc. I eat daily pinion nuts, almonds, butter and half and half.I make no apologies about that either. It is what works for me.

I'm just 3 months out of surgery and I follow my NUTs plan of 5 meals per day - 3 servings of healthy fats per day (1 oz nuts, avocado, 1 tsp olive oil), 3-4 oz lean Protein per meal, and any other food should not have more than 6 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fats and 1 gram of monosaturated fats per serving. However, if I want mayo or butter, I use the real thing - just a lot less. I also eat cheese as a Protein source - 2% or full-fat.

Healthy fat has been a key to my success pre- and post-op. Pre-op, I was having about 100 grams of fat per day (as part of a 1200 calorie per day diet). Post-op, I haven't measured it. It would be less than that since my calories are only around 1000ish now, but it is probably in the 80 gram range I would imagine.

I have only told 4 immediate family members. It is not because I am embarrassed. It is because I don't want to hear unsolicited advice or intrusive questions.
are you allowed to eat that?
how much have you lost so far?
I knew someone who had surgery and got sick.

Look at how many friends you have here - and all from just being yourself. we all care about you.
I'm sorry you are struggling right now, but I promise that life has good times in store for you. Its like that for everyone, ups and downs. the important thing is that you love yourself and take care of yourself when things suck for a while, and constantly remind yourself that everyone goes through bad times, it just happens, and it is a temporary period in your life.
Every day, you need to remind yourself about all the ways that you are awesome. Make a list and read it every morning. It will help boost your confidence. Here are some I can see to get you started: I am beautiful, I have a great smile, I am smart and going to college, I am kind.....now keep adding.... I bet there is long list.
A question... at dinner, when the other people went to another table, did they purposely walk past you? Or is it possible that you may be feeling so down that you misread the situation or let it feed into your sadness? Ask yourself if it had been someone else who got there first, if they would have yelled out and said, "hey guys, over here"?

You're absolutely right. It is a tool that does not go away just because someone loses focus. I got more "comfortable" with my diet around maybe 2 years post op, and that is a slippery slope. I was able to regain focus and lose the 15 pounds I regained. I didn't do any "reset" or "diet" necessarily. I just returned to the basics. It's amazing to me how cutting out the simple carbs and increasing Protein makes you feel fuller longer and even in the days after you feel more restriction, have more energy, better motivation, etc. It's a cycle either in a positive or negative way. For me, most of it is a mental/emotional battle, and getting myself in the right place with my coping mechanisms.

    Great topic.
I guess it is human nature to view the world through the filter of your own experiences. People who have never struggled with weight mistakenly assume that our brains/hormones work the same way as theirs, so judge us by their own experiences and will never understand or empathize.
No matter how much weight I lose, I will never forget the struggle and will always have compassion - because I lived it. My question to myself is, what biases/prejudices do I have for people who struggle with other challenges or addictions that I have never experienced?
On the other hand, it is very scary to allow someone into your daily life that could potentially derail you. So I can see the youtube guys point. My newfound behavior changes are so delicate. I know fat brain is lurking in the background, ready to take over if I open the door even a crack.

@@Momcat - Here is a study that shows something very important:
As a person becomes fitter and gains muscle mass, it is correct that he or she burns more calories at rest. However, some exercise enthusiasts have insufficient energy intakes, which do not meet the demands of their exercise programs. This imbalance may eventually reduce resting metabolic rate.

@@JamieLogical is correct muscle uses more energy than fat, but this summary states that it is not particularly significant.(50 calories a day). But over the course of a year, it adds up. But don't think you will see weight loss results quickly. But there are other plusses, including making loose skin look better.

I don't track my food anymore, but I know I ALWAYS get at least 100 grams of Protein a day, That is my top priority. I do also eat a fair amount of carbs, because as was mentioned by another poster, I am a distance runner. I don't go crazy with the carbs, but I don't shy away from them either, if I am confident I will make my protein goal for the day. I probably get close to 200 carbs when I am in the serious part of my training.
Clicking back through some of my logs from when I was tracking food as I was training for my half marathon, it looks like I was around 2100-2500 calories, 100 grams of fat, 200 grams of carbs, and 100-140 grams of protein.
