Ugh. So I am in Canada so while it's free I have to wait and wait and wait. I was first referred in March. I did not get my first apt until June. I jumped through all the hoops from July through to December (last paperwork goes in today. I will likely meet with the surgeon in March and likely will not have surgery until June! So 15 months in total. And that is an estimate. It could be longer.

100 pounds in 9 months is about 11 pounds a month. You have lost 17 pounds in 3 weeks or like 35 pounds in not much more than a month! Try and be patient.

I am actually hoping for slow weight loss. I know that sharing of this surgery would be received negatively by family and friends, therefore I am keeping it to myself. I am hoping that if I am able to loose the weight slowly, it will be both healthy and raise less eyebrows. I just don't want the negativity in my life from nay sayers.

I would do it anyways. Do you still want to salvage your marriage. If so, I would ask him for more time. If you have not been happy because of your weight and that is a big part of cause for divorce, it might be worth you both holding on a little longer. Yes, life is so hard. Hugs.

If he's into statistics and studies, I would approach from that angle.
Studies show that 1/1200 women will be able to lose 100lbs and keep it off for 5 years. So your trainer and gym and diet plan has about 0.0008% of working out, short term. There are no real long term studies, probably because basically no one loses that much weight and keeps it off for 10, 20, 50 years.
It takes your body 3-4 years to adjust to your new weight. So lose ALL your excess weight, then don't gain anything for 3-4 years before your metabolism starts to upregulate and your genetic profile shifts away from being an obese person.
Most of us cannot (1199/1200 people). We lose the weight and start to slip up. Even though we are no longer obese, our genetic profile still is. THIS is the challenge of weight loss, not just getting the scale to move. THIS is the reason we fight to lose weight but regain is so easily and so quickly.
Bariatric surgery offers you a 5ish year window to lose the weight, and maintain the loss long enough to make the genetic shift. Thousands of genes express themselves in different ways, and your lifestyle absolutely can change them.

It's been a whole year since I took control of my life and had RNY gastric bypass. I've had ups and downs and physical delay after delay(chronic Lupus flares, swollen joints, torn rotator cuff, loss of ability to use my right arm, etc), but here we are! It's been one year and I don't regret it for one moment! I am not where I want to be YET, but I will get there. Here are my stats: hw:429lbs sw:386 cw:220lbs

RJrocks got a reaction from Dee~Dee in How did you decide your goal weight, and did you reach it?
Good question. I am 5' 3". HW 230, CW 220. I am 4 months out from surgery. I have told my team my goal is 170 as that is the highest weight I still felt normal at. So I could live here and be happy. But my real personal goal is 137, my wedding weight. My stretch would be 127, my lowest adult weight. 127 puts me at the most ideal BMI (not that I put much value in the BMI thing, it's only a guide).

A "stall" a few weeks after surgery is not uncommon, and here's why.
Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of Water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet.
However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

RJrocks reacted to tired mommy0231 in My surgery on November 7 with Dr Illan and Bariatric Pal Team
I have been overweight for sometime and everyone in my hometown is getting gastric sleeve. My daughter cheers for high school and every Friday night another person would have had it done, I was finished, I told my husband. He said whatever, I called the insurance company and they wouldn't pay. So I started looking for cash options 10,500 is lowest I found one night in hospital. Really. So I had read Bariatric Pal forums before and started looking for Drs. I researched, I bet I have read everyone's story. I picked Dr. Illan and his group. I believe, I called October 12 sent deposit and scheduled for November 7. I called Bill the coordinator so many times with questions. But every time I called I never got a answer machine He or Henry answered. My pre- diet was explained to me, I was picked up by Stacy the NUT. Then off to the hospital, yes I was nervous, I did go alone. But these people knew I was and calmed me down and was great. They even found someone that had surgery the day before to ease my nerves to talk to me. She was great. I had test best surgery and met Dr. Illan wonderful Dr. Then after surgery was a little rough nothing can't handle nurses was awesome ring call bell there within 1 minute or less. You are never alone. There is a vallet or helper there also beside nurse, they are wonderful. There is a doctor in the hospital 24 hours a day. The care you get is unbelievable. You will be up moving night of surgery, it will help with gas. Then when Wednesday roles around you move to the hotel. You graduate, you are a little tired. You are not turned loose. You still have a vallet to show you around and where to eat and he is very nice. The hotel has a restaurant and a casino. It is a nice hotel. Believe me they take care of you every step. They only thing I regret is not flying home first class, my back hurt. I would have paid it. Everyone is like you went to Mexico by yourself, Yes I did. I would go back in a heartbeat to THIS group of people again because they treat you special. Thank you Bariatric Pal

RJrocks reacted to PorkChopExpress in It's done...although with last-minute changes
Well, the surgeon had to make the decision to switch me from Roux-en-y to vertical sleeve gastrectomy, but the surgery was done successfully yesterday and I'm at home recouperating now. Still trying to get rid of the last of the very uncomfortable gas, but I feel okay. Not very interested in putting anything in my stomach right now, but I'm trying to get fluids and Protein Shakes down...it's just VERY slow going. I get at most maybe 2oz done per hour right now. As the gas pain and general discomfort subside, I'm sure it'll get easier. Unfortunately, apparently the mesh that a prior surgeon used to repair an umbilical hernia was the wrong type, and resulted in my intestines scarring into the mesh such that he couldn't do anything without risking damage to my intestine, so he made the judgment call. I'm glad for that, I don't want complications if I can help it. It's just a bummer because that's what I've been feeding my brain with for over a year and I haven't really read up on VSG, though I imagine it's going to be much the same, behavior-wise.
Anyway, I'm glad to have it behind me and now I just want to make a full recovery and get on with this business of losing weight and getting fit.
On a side note, my pre-surgery weight was 351.2 - I lost over 35 pounds leading up to surgery. Not bad!
