47NHeaven reacted to Afrikanaaa in Intermittent Fasting - 16:8
Hey! Wanted to start this thread because when I was researching it I didn't see much information about intermittent fasting after weight loss surgery (especially vsg). But I'm a year and half out, not yet at goal, and was stalled for about 3 months. So I went to my bariatric nutritionist, showed her myfitnesspal logs (I track everything—even my workouts) and she told me to increase my Water and try to get back to 500. For me, trying to stay and function at that low of calories gave me really bad headaches and made me feel really weak. So, I went to my primary care for some direction. She suggested that I try intermittent fasting (while adhering to my bariatric caloric restrictions).

Basically, I eat my meals between 12 noon and 8pm, and drink nothing but water/tea (sometimes coffee) the rest of the day. I do 2 meals and a snack or 3 meals (3-4oz each), and it brings me right about 800 cals a day. I guess the "science" around it is giving your body 16 hours without eating to process the food you consumed.

I've been doing this for about 2 weeks and it's really kickstarted my weight loss again. I'm down 5lbs. I'm also able to drink more water (which some days I struggle with).
Just thought I'd share for any one else who needed to shake things up as well!

Thank you for your words of wisdom. I didn't think 242lbs would be in the category of those who lost slow. I thought at 242 I could expect to lose chunks of weight at a time like everyone else. Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App

It's been one year today since I had my sleeve done. My life has changed in every aspect.
    My start weight was 333.1lbs
My weight this morning was 137.8lbs
    That's a total loss of 195.3lbs!!
    I've also lost a total of 95 inches...I'm a size 6 now...used to be a size 30.
I have accomplished this by being very focused and strict with my eating and exercise.
I eat very low carb, and always get in my Protein, Vitamins and Water every day.
For all of you just starting out, just know that anything is possible, and if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything!!

47NHeaven reacted to genn in Grocery shopping has changed so much
A few months back I would have went to the grocery store and had atleast 30% junk. A few months ago I would have went through about 24 sticks of butter cooking and eating with a family of five. I would never look at nutrition facts ever!!! I didn't care what I cooked or how I cooked it. I realized last night when I went grocery shopping that I only bought three things that were snack unhealthy foods and they were for our kids it used to be way more then that and for me as well. Last night it was more shrimp and meats ,turkey bites, tuna ,cauliflower ,broccoli, cucumbers, all healthy foods. And for the first time today I realized I don't even miss the sweets anymore. I made it through the entire holiday season not one cookie or cake or pie and I'm proud bc while everyone else gained the weight through the holidays, I shedded the pounds!!! I went through a couple weeks of regret bc everything would make me so sick when I went to regular foods but I went back to shakes for awhile then tried again and then I was fine. I watched my family eat and it really sucked I'm not going to lie but I also know I did this for a reason and wasn't giving in. It just took me realizing last night how much in just a couple months my life has changed drastically, and the healthier choices I make now and how much I focus on nutrition facts before I purchase anything. Shopping last night opened my eyes to my poor choices in life!!

Agree with cat woman. I'm counting total weight loss. Not just post surgery loss. You lost even more than me pre-op.

that's a factor as well. I also lost a bunch pre-op. People who lose weight pre-op tend not to have big initial drops, because part of that drop the first month is Water weight. If you lost a lot of weight pre-op, then that "water weight" is long gone. I was the same.

Your weight loss is similar to mine. I'm also 48 and started with a surgery weight of. 244. Did you do a preop diet? How much did you lose there? My dietician has told me that my weight loss has been incredibly fast. I can tell you a friend had the same surgery the day after me and I'm 10lbs ahead of her so I know that is true. Don't worry. You are doing well!

everyone loses at different rates due to many different factors. As long as she's sticking to her plan, she's good.

Wow! You look 28 in your photo!
There are a host of factors that contribute to the pace of your weight loss, from your starting BMI to what you're eating (too few calories can paradoxically cause a stall), and your activity level. I also lost around 13 pounds in six weeks. I stalled out for several weeks before I started to drop again. One of the only adverse reactions I had to surgery was having a really upset stomach when I started to reintroduce solid foods at the one-month mark. This caused me to progress through the post-op eating stages more slowly, staying on a liquid and soft foods diet that was really too low in calories and freaked my body out into thinking it was starving and holding onto weight to try to survive. When I was able to start eating solid foods and get into a reliable routine again the weight began to drop. It still went slow. My starting BMI was in the low 30s, and I knew in advance I'd lose more slowly due to it. I did eventually exceed my goals, but it took about 14 months.
You might experience silver linings to losing weight slowly, as I did. I lost a minimal amount of hair, and have absolutely no loose skin.

I've learned through all this that no one should compare themselves to others, because we all lose at different rates depending on a lot of factors (age, gender, starting weight, metabolism rate, whether or not you lost a lot of weight pre-op, etc). But just so you know, when I was five weeks out, I had lost 16 lbs. And I started out *way* heavier than you (almost 400 lbs). So don't worry about that at all. Again, if you stick to the program, the weight *will* come off. I was behind the curve for at least the first six months ,and I ended up blowing everyone else I went through classes with out of the Water. It's commitment to the program that makes the difference - not the rate of your weight loss. I was highly committed from day one.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far. If you lost at that rate, in six months you would lose ~65 pounds.
This is a journey not a race, you are doing great.

I'm slowly losing it too. My starting weight was 298 I'm a little under 5'9. I had surgery the end of April. I've only loss 67 lbs so far. The way I see it is my body needs more time then others to adjust and heal. Plus the slower you lose it the less loose skin you'll have. Be patient and keep making healthy choices. It will pay off over time.

you're what we in the bariatric community call a "lightweight" (I don't know what the actual weight requirements are to be considered a "lightweight", but I'd say under 250 lbs). Lightweights lose slower than us heavier folks because they have a lot less to lose. I know you read about people losing 30 lbs the first month, but those folks are few and far between and usually weigh over 300 lbs.
Your body's going to lose at the rate it wants to lose. The only control you have is to stick to your program. I was a "slow loser", and I have lost 227 lbs. It'll come off, whether fast or slow, if you stick to your program.
