At my surgeon's office, they sell Celebrate Vitamin Patches. It's awesome! I couldn't stomach the regular Vitamin, but with these I have zero side effects. With these Patches, you just put a new one on every day. I cannot recommend them more.

jambam-44 reacted to Babbs in 1 month in - I gained weight. How is that possible?
Don't be sad! It's not real weight gain. That's impossible as early out as you are. It's just your body acting wacky because of the rapid weight loss and lack of food. Happens to ALL of us. Here's the scientific explanation why it happens:
Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of Water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet.
However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

Ice is fine. It's going to be completely melted by the time it gets to your stomach anyway.
You can't stretch your sleeve on liquids. Your pyloric valve still functions, meaning it opens right up and lets liquids through. You will only get a feeling of having over-eaten when you get to purees or soft foods, and you have something with some heft so that your pyloric valve closes up to allow your stomach to get to work on digestion.
This is one of the reasons sleevers are cautioned not to drink their calories, except in the early going when you need those Protein Shakes. The sleeve will not stop you from drinking all the milkshakes and frappuccinos you want. It also won't stop you from eating a ton of high carb, low Protein foods like crackers and Cookies, but that's a story for another day
The reason some people struggle with liquids early on is because their stomachs are inflamed, bruised, and swollen after the major trauma of surgery. The fact that you have recovered quickly means you have a surgeon who did meticulous and excellent work, and you are a quick healer. It's a good thing, I promise!

@@brather yes they are. Way too high. You are lucky you lost anything given all the fluids you were pumped full of during surgery, and 6 lbs per week even without the trauma of surgery is more than anyone can expect on a regular basis, particularly a woman. You'll make yourself much happier if you dial those expectations way down. Good luck!

Most important are your liquids right now, Protein will become easier every day. I suggest Isopure or Proti Diet is a protein flavored mix you can add to your Water that is flavored so you get both, your fluids and your protein. They have grape, blue rasberry, orange and many other flavors. Each box brings about 8 packets and you mix the Syrup with 10 oz of Water. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Ive lost 51 pounds since Aug 1 and now weigh 199. I haven't weighed in the one hundreds in 4+ years... I'm not losing as quickly as I was in the beginning but that is to be expected. If I had to guess I'd say I lose between 2-3 pounds/week.

jambam-44 reacted to PorkChopExpress in Convenient food container for meals, post-op!
So I just hit two weeks post-op and I was advanced to soft/mushy foods. When I was happily shopping for items I would be allowed to eat, I discovered that Ziploc makes these nifty little 1/2 cup containers with a 1/4 cup line on them. If I put my meat and veggie in there to that line, it seems to be a perfect amount that gets me to "just full." Just thought I'd share the tip, it's working perfectly for me taking meals to work. It's just that I feel a little ridiculous when people come through the lunchroom and that's what I'm working on for half an hour
Still so mind-blowing to me...THAT is all it takes to get me full. It's hard to reconcile with my brain.

I know that you can not swallow gum or pieces of a mint. Why don't you try a mouth rinse until you can ask your surgeon if you can have gum or mints?

Prayers going up for you and your father---if you think an offered prayer might help.
    This is my mantra:
    "Yesterday was the past."
"Tomorrow is a goal yet to be reached".
"Today is called, "The Present" because it is a GIFT. We get to "open" it new every day and make it our own.
Leave the past behind, look forward to the future and being able to "be there" for you father, but for today--concentrate on the Lord's gift to you----The Present.
Make the most of what you have and the least of what you haven't.
Be kind to yourself. Listen to your sleeve. It will help you get through if you learn to listen to and work with it.
Take the time to take a deep breath, pause and THEN step off into your future.
PS: I live in Upstate NY. If there is any way that I can help you and/or your father do NOT hesitate to ask.
    Again, prayers offered.

The thing you have to keep in mind throughout this whole process is that while you had the physical issue addressed, you haven't addressed the mental issues...and the two things go together, with obesity. The weight is a byproduct that ends up becoming part of the problem, but the vast majority of the issue is psychological. That's what got you to the point where surgery was needed.
So evaluate what you're feeling, in light of that decision. Right now, you aren't feeling hunger. Your body isn't aching for food, your stomach right now, frankly, doesn't care if you put NOTHING in it. What you're going through is 100% psychological in nature. You are mourning food, mourning your old lifestyle, and your brain is desperate to hang onto the "old you." But you need to really dedicate yourself mentally to the idea that this change is good for you, it will be for the rest of your life, and better to get through this mourning period and find peace with it, than have your brain struggling against it for the months to come.
I just had the sleeve two weeks ago and for the first 6-8 days, I found I was preoccupied with food. What I wanted to eat, what I would be able to eat in X number of weeks, etc... Part of it was the mourning process, part of it was having had nothing but liquids for like 3-4 weeks. But I really did some self-analysis and realized that it was just my mind coming to the sad realization that everything it knew before September 23rd had been thrown out, and it was never coming back...and my mind may have wanted things to stay the same, but they couldn't.
It's a little like breaking up with someone. Sometimes, some part of you misses the familiarity and comfort of being with them, even if things were super unhealthy. But eventually, over time, all of that fades and you start to realize that it was very good that you broke up, and you're way better off now. That's what you gotta go through, with food.
So don't screw up on this. Follow your surgeon's instructions. Enjoy the little food that you do get to eat and make sure that you're eating stuff that you like...don't make it torture. But also don't break the rules. Re-train your stomach and re-train your brain, it's REALLY important...because it IS possible to screw this up and not lose weight, and after all that you've been through, is that really where you want to be in six months? A cautionary tale?
