The best way to approach it is to just steer clear of anything processed when possible. Stick to a diet rich in whole foods and lean Protein. If it comes in a box, it's most likely processed...
Anytime things are "extracted" they are not the best way to consume them, with a few exceptions. Juicing vegetables will allow you to consume a lot more than if you were to only eat them. Juicing fruits on the other hand separates the sugar from the fiber, and that's a bad thing. A good rule of thumb when trying to add more fruits/vegetables into your diet is to "juice vegetables and blend fruits". Blending fruit keeps the fiber intact and still allows for some delicious drinks! You could also add some blended fruit smoothies to vegetable juice to mask the taste of some of the stronger greens, but I prefer green juice with some lemons and ginger.
There are a couple of exceptions that I make to the "don't juice fruits" rule, which are lemons, maybe an apple once in a while (only if trying to mask lots of greens), cucumbers (yes they're a fruit..a melon actually), tomatoes, and peppers.
White rice would be refined because the germ is removed. Brown rice would be the better choice (if you choose to eat rice at all). I think quinoa is the best choice for any grains, and perhaps farro once in a while. These are grains that you can eat in their "non-refined" state, so they take longer to be digested giving your body a chance to digest the natural sugars and carbs in them as opposed to eating refined carbs like Pasta, chips, wheat breads, or fruit juice, or anything with added sugar which causes your liver to go into "overdrive" trying to process everything quickly. When that happens, your liver just starts converting it to fat. It also wreaks havoc on your blood sugar levels and just throws everything out of balance.
I would bet that for most of us who have had procedures done, when you really look at the foods that got us into trouble (not the reasons for eating them), that refined carbohydrates and processed foods were at or near the top of the list.
I think the easiest way to approach it is to eat foods that are as minimally processed as possible. Stick to whole, fresh foods and lean Proteins and you'll be on the right track.
    Best of luck!

OK, so I am 16 months out from surgery and I have lost a total of 130lbs. I'm super proud of myself, but I am having the worst time shopping for clothes......which is strange, bc that is one of my favorite things to do! I feel so overwhelmed when I walk into a store because I have SO MANY OPTIONS now. I am used to shopping in a tiny little section in the back of the store and now I actually have choices and different styles to choose from. Surely I'm not alone here.........Anybody else dealing with this issue? Please share!!

The clinical term for our kind of hair loss is telogen effluvium. Nioxin does not work and neither does minoxidil. Don't waste your money or believe anyone who is trying to sell you a product to make your hair grow. I had a hairdresser try to push me into buying some very expensive stuff. I said no after doing my research. Our low calorie diet is why we lose our hair. All you can do is make sure you get enough Protein and Biotin. When you return to a normal diet, hair will grow again.

    Hello Everyone!
I figured it was time to join a forum because I'm sure I'm driving my friends crazy with all the VSG talk! Anywho, my name is Erin and I am 32. After many years of struggling with my weight decided to look into the VSG on July 28th. On that day I quit smoking (cold turkey), quit drinking alcohol, and coffee! I attended my first seminar on Aug 8th and it made me feel like this is definitely the right decision for me. Thankfully my family and friends are all very supportive so it helps. I have my first appointment with my surgeon on August 26 to go over the insurance and surgery requirements. I don't think I have any cormobidies but my BMI is 45.
Today I went to get a check up with my PCP and am scheduled for an ultrasound due to some stomach pain I have been having. He is worried it may be my spleen. I'm hoping it is nothing that will hinder me getting my surgery. I asked my PCP how he felt about wls and he is absolutely against it. He said he would rather me try medication to curb my appitite, because in his experience wls patients gain the weight back. I think I need a new PCP. Luckily my surgery program said they will write the letter of medical necessity for the insurance approval if I am a good candidate.
I am very excited to meet with the surgeon and finally get the ball rolling. My plan is to get that checklist completed ASAP so I can be one step closer to a healthier version of myself!
    Thanks for reading my story!

My long term goal is to be able to shop in the same stores as my daughter when she gets to be a teen. She's almost two, so it's a very long term goal!
Near term, I want to be able to ride roller coasters, get scuba certified and dive with my husband, and not have to use a seatbelt extender on the airplane.

Don't tell people you are having surgery and you won't have to come up with comebacks.
If people are saying this to you, they don't really care about you. Just cut them loose.
