LolaSerena got a reaction from Sugary Sweetheart in Told my Mother I was having surgery and her repsonse is.........
I'm pretty much on the same boat as Diana except my mother started the criticism when I became a teenager. I didn't tell anyone in my family and I never will. I had my surgery May 9th and my husband was there for me. He was supportive and told me it was my decision whether or not I wanted to tell my family. My mother makes everything about her. When I initially mentioned that I was participating of weight loss classes and that if I didn't lose enough weight I would consider the surgery she went off on a drama queen attack.
It helped that my closest family member lives 400 miles away and my parents are 4000 miles away.

Diet Soda and The Metabolic Syndrome
The metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors for disease that often occur together and raise your risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
It is defined as having at least three of the following:
Abdominal obesity (belly fat) High fasting glucose High triglycerides Low HDL cholesterol Elevated blood pressure Drinking “calorie free” beverages instead of sugary ones does not appear to be helpful against the metabolic syndrome.
In a study published in the journal Circulation in 2008, which followed 9,514 people for 9 years, drinking artificially sweetened beverages was associated with a 34% greater risk of developing the metabolic syndrome (1).
Another study found a 36% increased risk of metabolic syndrome and a drastically increased risk of diabetes in diet soda drinkers (2).
Bottom Line: Observational studies show a correlation between diet soda and the metabolic syndrome, which can lead to serious diseases. There is an association between diet soda and depression
In a study of 263,925 adults aged 51-70, individuals who drank soda were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with depression over a period of 10 years.
The link was stronger for diet soda than regular soda (3).
Diet soda is also associated with preterm delivery.
In a study of 59,334 pregnant women in Denmark, 1 serving per day of diet drinks was associated with a 38% increased risk of preterm delivery. 4 servings per day increased the risk

@@s.thompson you may not have read this thread you just bumped up, but the original poster had complications and was regretting their surgery because things weren't working for them the way they are supposed to work.
You are just barely a week out. You are experiencing what many people go through the first days/weeks after surgery. (including the regret and feeling of "what the hell did I just do?" feelings)
Everything you're going through is in the range of normal - some are lucky enough to have zero issues right after, but most do experience discomfort, pain, pressure and difficulties swallowing. If the meds your doc gave you don't work, call them back the next day and get help. But it sounds like you're just really swollen and need to get the right dose of pain meds and get fluids in to feel better and get through the first few days of discomfort.
Try sipping warm/cold (I used broth and sugar-free popsciles alternately) and I had difficulties swallowing for days after before I figured out to use that method. You're likely in pain from the gas they used to inflate your abdomen too, and the only thing that works for that is to get up and walk so the gas gets absorbed and out of your system.
It absolutely will get better. Have faith that it will and just keep sipping fluids, walking and take your pain meds as often as allowed. If it doesn't get better really soon, call that doctor back and get them to help. Good luck!

Gladys62, I have been reading your journey. I don't know if you've found a new bariatric surgeon but I am in Slidell and have the most amazing Dr ! If you would like his info, I will gladly pass it along. He is so caring, gives out his cell, his dietician emails me back right away with my crazy questions. You deserve good care. Please let me know if I can help

I have actually eaten food since Thursday!! It's amazing! The barium coated my system and the pain stopped. I ate!
The UGI showed "erosion" so my two doses of Dexilant daily and 4 doses of Carafate daily are helping!! Still can't handle Protein Shakes (they burn) but soft meat is working!! I actually have some energy today!! I think I am going to live.
My GI is going to attempt the scope again in May to check the stitch he saw so There may be more work to be done but getting in more than 200-300 calories a day has made me feel so much better. Almost at 800 today!!!
The support on here has kept me fighting!! Thank you from my children and me!!! I am going to live!!

Upper GI today. Severe inflammation from acid in lower esophagus and upper stomach. (Hmmmm maybe a PPI or acid reducer would have been an idea! But NO, not for Dr Arrogant).
Anyway, Carafate FOUR times a day PLUS the new PPI (starts with a D something like....Dexalon) twice a day. Then if the swelling is down enough in a month then another scope attempt.
I do have hope now. I am in good, compassionate hands so I WILL be okay.
Interesting fact: Barium is amazing at easing off stomach pain and burning!! I actually ATE 2 oz of moist chicken right after the test and it didn't hurt!!!
I have hope. I'd still reverse it but for now I'll take feeling good. And I see that on MY horizon.
I will keep you posted and I wouldn't be where I am now without the encouragement from all of you.
    Thank you!

He did get some biopsies but couldn't get to the mass seen on CT. He saw a stricture but could not get to it until swelling goes down. I have a mess. But this doctor CARES!!! He told my daughter that I WILL get better soon!!! Upper GI Thursday and go from there. I see hope now.

I was sleeved 5-17 and I've lost almost 13 pounds in 2 weeks (12.7). I lost 12 pounds on the pre-op diet so it's a total of 24.7 pounds in 24 days, that's a pound a day. My scale has been fluctuating 2-3 pounds the last few days which is frustrating but I just try and remind myself that this is an amazing rate and I can't be greedy or rush things. I think 17 pounds is fantastic! Just keep moving forward.

I was sleeved on 5/10. I've lost 13 lbs since surgery and 21 including pre-op diet. I've been stalled for a few days. Trying not to stress and just following my doctors instructions.

That's over a pound a day! Have you ever loss that much before on a diet? I hate to tell you but you will shortly see a stall for a week or 2 and then HOPEFULLY a 2-3lb a week if you exercise regularly.
Over a pound a day is melting. I am much much larger than you and lost 10lbs in 10 days after surgery. I am staying off the scale until I see my surgeon next month because I read about the 3 week in stall.

You think 17 lbs in two weeks is barely losing? What were you expecting?
Couple pieces of advice looking forward:
--you are very likely about to hit a stall that will last a couple of weeks. Stay off the scale if that will upset you.
--30+ lbs per month (which is what you would be at if your rate of loss stayed the same) is almost unheard of, especially for women. So you should expect your long-term rate of weight loss to slow down significantly. If it doesn't, you can be pleasantly surprised, but in no way should you expect to keep losing at the incredibly fast rate you are losing right now. Enjoy it while you can.
--don't look to compare your rate of weight loss to other people's. I know it is tempting but it never ends well. "Comparison is the thief of joy" -- Teddy Roosevelt. Though to be honest I have never heard of a woman losing as fast as you are post op so maybe it would make you happy!

Completely normal feelings. Give it some time. I felt the same way for probably 3 months but then the weight loss picked up, the nausea went away and I am SO thrilled! I will be 1 year post-op on Saturday and I am down 120 pounds since surgery and a total of 145 pounds. Diabetes is gone. Off cholesterol meds. Can do so much more than I could have before! Worth every second! But I promise you I didn't feel that way in the beginning. Just know you are among friends and you can come here and vent. You will be amazed when you look back at this in a few months!

@@LolaSerena - I'm glad it helped! And thanks! I was just telling someone else how shocked I am that it has all added up and here I am at goal at 1 year post-op. Never thought it would happen! But boy you should see some of my posts from the first few months! Just couldn't get past the "what have I done?!" stage. I am well past that now.

    Hello
I had my sleeve on the 11th May and have those feelings as well. But mostly I feel energised and motivated. I think my not so great times stem from still being on liquids, I never thought I'd be excited to eat puréed food.
I'm still certain that this was right for me and I'm excited to start learning about food again.

Hi May Sleevers - I finally got my surgery date - May 10th. It's a ways off, but it'll be here before I realize it. I'd love to have a partner to pass the time with. So if you want a virtual buddy - let me know.
I've been doing pretty good with loosing some of the pre-surgery weight my surgeon wants me to lose, but I was down sick for over a week and know I need to get refocused. I"m looking forward to making some connections in this group. Thanks!
