endlessquest got a reaction from Sai in Starting weight 340 - age 50
Im a guy...I had my sleeve at age 55 and was 348lbs. I'm now 4 months out and down 110lbs. I'm off all medications, off insulin, diabetes is in full remission, sleep apnea gone, 4x to xl in shirt size and 52 to 40 waist size. No regrets and life is great! Don't get me wrong, this is a tool and not a magic fix. I've worked very hard working out every day, walking and riding my bike. I've also followed my nutritionist eating plan to the T and not cheating with red flag foods.

Well, I PM'ed Alex just two short days ago asking him to consider a regain forum, and well, here we are!
He asked me to start the first thread.
    So here goes...
I am 27 months post op and have gained 20 lbs from my lowest. I have had a massive personal loss (stress eating) and took a night position that I LOVE (but snack all night) so 20 lbs and here I am.
    Plan:
    1. Came back to bariatric pal and owned my gain. admitted to it and moved forward.
    2. Seeing a new doc and nut next week. Changed insurance due to job change and have an incredible new clinic/doc/nut and getting established with them wednesday.
    3. Started 5 day Pouch Test and trying to re-learn restriction.
    4. Found the coordinator of the support group associated with my new doc. called the coordinator. announced myself. now they are expecting me, so I have to go and face it.
    5. ordered Slim in 6 program from Beachbody since i have not exercised like I should in a LONG time so that's a pretty mellow start.
    6. bought all sorts of proteins-new flavor shakes, Soups, Quest Cookies and Cream bars etc because variety will keep me going.
So...there it is. My truth. I have gained. Yes, I have regained. But through the loss of my dad, my grief, a new career path I am in love with, and learning how to balance a night job with my eating I have also regained perspective.
I regained some weight. Now I regain control. Then I regain my life.

I am so glad it's 20 pounds - and will be watching to see how you do with your progress. my dad died unexpectedly this summer too, and I know how it can throw you off balance.

I'm 4 years post op. I had regained 35 lbs. Back in April I decided to get it off and I have. I'm at the lowest weight I've been at since my surgery. I'm going to try to lose about 10 more lbs. otherwise I'm happy where I am now.

Great idea...to have a regain forum. At my lowest, I was 113 lbs. I'm now at 133. I didn't ever expect to stay at 113 but I do want to be between 120-125. So I'm approximately 10 lbs. more than I'd like. My clothes still fit but some are tight. I don't want to wear tight clothes unless they are tight in the right areas. I REFUSE to buy larger sizes. I just won't go there again and have my closet look like a clothing store...with items in every size.
So, each and every day, I vow to eat clean. Some days I do...and some I don't. I don't consider myself a bad person if I gained...but I adjust if I have seen the scale go in the wrong direction.
Most important, is I remember that I'm mobile and normal sized and can do pretty much anything I want. That was not always the case. I remember that I can catch up to my toddler grandson as he runs around, and can also hang with my teenaged granddaughter while she plays softball and volleyball. Was a time I was unable to fly to see her because of the weight.
Point is...I live my life and it's not based on the number on the scale. If I can't get it to go down..I head back to the doctor for an additional fill. I also reign in what I know are bad choices and start anew.
Sorry for not focusing more on the specifics of weight gain....but I also wanted to note where the focus should be..or at least where I think the focus should be.

I have type 2 diabetes and prior to my surgury I was put on a 5 week semi liquid / liquid diet. I was on an insulin pump and took metforman and Januvia. My endocrinologist cut my insulin in half at the start of my pre op diet. 3 weeks in I lost 40 lbs and she took me off the insulin pump. Prior to surgury I had lost 55 lbs and she took me off all my medications declareing that my diabetes was is in full remission. Now 16 weeks out and my blood sugars consistently test in the 80's & 90's.

I've been doing cardio one hour per day 7 days per week since 1 week post op. Plus I walk maybe 3 miles per day as well. I probably burn 800 calories a day exercising and took in less than 800 calories a day eating. I was loosing about 8 lbs per week. Now I'm eating maybe 1100 Calories a day and my weight loss has dropped to about 2 lbs per week. I'm 16 weeks out and have dropped 115 lbs and about 15 lbs from goal weight.

None of the following is meant to sound mean or critical (please don't read it that way - just being honest and trying to hit points you may not have considered or might be in denial about).
It's great that you're exercising because it's going to make you feel better overall, but weight gain/loss is 90% food and diet related.
My doc said that all people will lose even eating absolute crap for the first year, but they will regain if they don't take the time to throw out all they know about food/eating and relearn how to properly eat healthy and figure out correct (small) portion sizing.
Your problem seems to be that you're eating things you shouldn't (simple carbs/sugar) and possibly eating too many calories, and that is causing you to regain (simple carbs and sugar are usually high calorie, low nutrition slider foods that make it really easy to overeat).
Are you tracking every bite and sip of food/drink? You probably should be measuring and tracking all of it, especially since you're regaining. You likely are overeating and eating foods low in nutrition as well. It would give you a much better idea of whether the failure is your sleeve or more likely - a disconnect with what and how much you you actually eat. I imagine even consulting another surgeon, they'd like to see how many calories you're consuming and what those calories are made up from to make a truly honest opinion about whether another surgery is a good step for you or not.
Simple carbs and sugar are known to cause you to crave them all the more once you start eating them regularly, so that would explain the feelings of hunger. (you're not really hungry if you are eating good protein/complex carbs and getting enough calories - it's cravings or head hunger)
I would think the answer is counseling with a therapist familiar with food addictions, and a serious mental reset regarding your relationship with food, not more surgery.
I'd suggest you go back to the beginning of a sleeve diet - do a week of Protein liquids, then mushies, then onto solids. Get your Water and Protein and eat good veggies and healthy complex carbs in moderation. You need to research healthy meals and throw out the crap foods and seriously dedicate yourself to resetting your whole food relationship.
That's what we are supposed to do during the honeymoon phase of the sleeve (roughly the first year). If you didn't get your diet stuff down cold, then you won't do well over the long term. It's a sad fact, but most surgeons aren't really driving that point home. The weight loss effects won't last if you regularly eat crap foods. The surgeries allow you a measure of control for you to get back to basics without the gnawing hunger and drastically reduce the portion sizes in the beginning... so you can lose weight and relearn how to eat properly.
Maybe once you've got that stuff down well, you can add back in some sugar treats for very special occasions, but they should never, ever be something you eat regularly again. But maybe, if you can't control yourself, it might come down to eliminating them completely if you want to stay healthy.
I know it's sucky that you aren't doing so well right now, but you can get stuff figured out if you're willing to do the hard work. It might be worth it rather than going to another surgery and hoping that it does all the work; because it won't. You have to do it, the surgery(ies) are just a tool, but they won't work if you don't commit to using them properly.
    Good luck!!

Your weight loss is fantastic! I anticipated a weight loss of 2 lbs per week....your at 2.5lbs per week. Look at it this way, at 2 lbs per week you'll be down a 100lbs in just about a year...and that's somthing to smile about! So insted of grumbling about "only loosing 16 lbs in 6 weeks"...try shouting out "hey everyone, I've lost 16 lbs in 6 weeks!!!

My A1C prior to my pre op diet was 9.5 and I was on an insulin pump, metformin and Januvia. 4 weeks into my pre op diet I dropped 40 lbs and my blood sugars ranged in the 80's. And A1C dropped to 6.9. My endocrinologist took me off my insulin pump and all diabetes medications even before surgury. Today I'm 6 days post op and my numbers are below 100. I follow up with my endocrinologist ar the end if the month so I'm hoping my diabetes will stay in remission.
