WOW! It is hard to believe that I am less than a month away from being a year post op. The time has flown by even though it seems like just yesterday I was seeing the surgeon for my initial consultation. I haven't missed a support group meeting since the surgery, I have mentored 4 people that have had the surgery after me and I am loving my new life.
My only regret is that I didn't look into this sooner.

klouisa64 reacted to bostonmama in Why is alcohol banned post op -forever???
Addiction transfer to alcohol is scary stuff. I rarely drank pre op (maybe once every few months). When I started drinking post op everything was fine for months, until I noticed that I was drinking a lot more often, then I started having trouble stopping once I start. Then I noticed I was looking forward to drinking the same way I used to look forward to food. Now I promise myself I won't drink, but can't resist the urge and have the old pattern of guilt and regret I used to have with fast food.

This all happened pretty quickly. Now I'm going to counseling and considering AA, even though I'm not a "real" alcoholic yet.

I was of course warned about this pre op, but didn't think it would happen to me since I've never had a problem with alcohol or drugs, and I guess I didn't consider myself a good addict either, but I can see now that I was. Alcohol is much much worse of an addiction, I certainly wish I hadn't started drinking post op.

I have said this before, and it may apply here too. Tell people about your surgery to Inform them, NOT to Affirm you. If and when you are comfortable, you can share with others. I have been amazed at how many people are either thinking about WLS, or know someone who is considering it. I see it as a chance to counter the negative junk out there about WLS failures and complications.
If you tell no one, it is your choice and NO ONE should condemn you for your silence. Just be comfortable with who you are and who you will become once the surgery succeeds for you!

klouisa64 reacted to SharBear617 in When can I eat a salad?
I'm rny, started eating salad about week 10....I have no problem with it at all. If you do a salad for a meal, get that Protein in there (chicken, shrimp, salmon, boiled egg, cheese, bacon) keep it all on the top so you can get it in. If you eat a side salad with your Protein, just focus on the protein source first, and then if room have at it with the salad.

Premier Protein is my favorite of the ready-made shakes. They have several flavors, but I think the chocolate is best. 160 calories, 2 net carbs, 30 grams of Protein.< /p>

The statistics were against me. I went to the hospital completely unsure if I would have the courage to go through with my surgery, and terrified I would die. No one... I promise you, NO ONE, ever wanted to have bariatric surgery less than I. I was an emotional food addict whose life had shrunk so much that food was my entire social life. I weighed 367.8 pounds, had out of control diabetes, and could no longer walk across my own kitchen on most days. I needed both knees replaced and my doctor refused to do it until I lost a lot of weight.
The night before my surgery I was alone in the house and I sobbed a funeral dirge for my best friend, food. I was certain I would lose my mind without it.
My friends, are you hesitating?? Struggling? Regretting?? If you can stay with me, read on.
I will tell you that after the first month there hasn't been one day in five years that I haven't thought, "I never could have done this before."
My journey has been difficult, and you will have your struggles, too. The first year, I cared for and buried my beloved sister--my "person" in this world--who died in my arms. The second year, I had my right knee replaced. The third year, my left knee. My weight loss stalled, but I never gave up. The fourth year, my father died and right afterwards, my husband almost died and needed months of nursing.
I didn't tell you all that to whine. I told you in order to try to put some context to my life, because in spite of all that sorrow and pain, I am filled with joy. I have taken back my life, and you can, too.
When I came out of my surgery, I vowed that having taken the drastic step of altering my body, I was going to be all in. I have honored that vow.
I had to learn to walk again. Now I am a landscape, wedding and portrait photographer.
I had to accept that I couldn't go on vacation and eat like the old me without gaining back weight it took me months to lose. Now I usually drop a couple of pounds on vacation, and I have one thing every day that I really want. To eat, that is!! I get to have experiences instead of food now!
I had to accept that carbs are not part of my daily eating. But I have learned to actually prefer zucchini spaghetti!!
Most importantly, I learned that no one will ever abuse me again. And that includes me.
I learned that emotional eating may feel like self care, but it is self destruction, and self destruction and self preservation can never exist side by side.
Last year, I photographed the cliffs of Maine, the mountains of West Virginia (going by rope down to the waterfalls), beaches in the Carolinas, and so many other things. (Check out my stuff at mlwolfephotos.com if you are inclined!).
I could babble on and on...
Today, I am at my lowest weight in 34 years. I have not met my weight loss goal. I'm still just over 200 pounds--a weight many people begin this journey at!! It may take me a year, but I'll get there.
On January 1st I turned 60, and I cried. A lot. I didn't cry because I was 60. I cried because I wasted so many years... My 30s... My 40s...half my 50s. I cannot get them back. But I have what's left, and I will cherish each breath.
So, I lost much of my stomach. I lost 153 pounds. I gained the world.
I wish that for each and every one of you! May you work to make all your dreams come true!
Attaching a few pics, not just of what I look(ed) like, but of who I am!!!

I won't be deleting any accounts. You are more than welcome to unsubscribe from our emails and go your merry way.
The straw that broke the camels back was a group of weight loss surgeons, bariatric psychologists, and other integrated health members that approached me recently at a weight loss surgery conference I was attending. They said they love suggesting BariatricPal to their patients but were very concerned about some bullying that was taking place. They didn't feel it was a "safe" place for their patients. Many of our members ended up becoming overweight because of the bullying and trauma they had suffered earlier on in life. It's quite sickening that they should be required to re-live the same trauma while seeking "support" online!
I opened up an investigation a few weeks ago and what I discovered was nauseating. There are hundreds of private messages between some members that discuss strategy on how to bully or make fun of other members that disagree with them publicly. At the end of the day, we're an online support group and everyone needs to learn how to play nice. If you can't abide by the rules, you're not welcome here.
If this was about $, I'd keep things status quo and wouldn't ruffle any feathers. I promised myself that 2017 would be an awesome one for the BariatricPal community and our members. If you're not happy with my decision, you are more than welcome to follow the members I banned to the other online communities that are readily available to you.

Look at it from a different perspective. If you die prematurely from medical conditions related to obesity, who will lose out. It will be your kids. How will they cope? So take care of yourself so you can take care of your kids.

Yay, I have mastered chicken! I made a chicken Soup and it was the best one yet. No protests from the pouch and it was delicious. So I guess Soups will be a staple on my menu from now on. I just have to learn how to make smaller batches, my freezer is getting full and hubby can't eat it all alone.
Still have to be careful with dumping, since my pouch seems overly sensitive with simple carbs. But that's a small price to pay.
It seems like my stricture fix is holding well and I'm happy with the way things are progressing. Weight loss is still slow, but I'm losing, so I can't complain too much. Tomorrow will be 7 weeks post-op and I'm down 17 lbs today. So my average is better than 2 lbs / week! Wohoo!!

Me!! I went through what you're describing. I'm 11 weeks post-op. The first 2 or 3 weeks I felt like myself and so excited to start my journey. Then "it" hit me. I felt a little depressed some days. Sad I guess. I also felt alienated I guess is the word that comes to mind. Finally this past weekend all of a sudden it hit me that I was feeling really good. Like my old self again! I realized this as I was preparing my pill boxes for the week. I remember thinking how normal that felt. That's when the sun seemed to come out over me and I felt happy and at peace. You may just need time to adjust to all that is new now. Give it yourself to me.
