When they put the IV in, you will feel a little prick. (My first ex-husband was a little prick!). Then just let them give you a nice nap. When you wake up, you will have your new tummy.

I just had my vsg on 7/24/15 and am curious as to how much people have lost within the first few months? Also, what kind of foods/drinks did you find most easily to eat/drink the first month after the surgery? Thanks!!

Mine didn't give me any specific percentages or goal numbers. I'm glad because to me it's as dangerous as living by the scale. Those numbers become ALL you focus on instead of embracing a new lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise. The closest I got to a number was really general information at the pre-appointment seminar where they informed us that sleevers lose 50 - 60% of their weight. I wasn't locked into a time frame or a goal number.

Mine estimated that after 6 months I'd have lost the amount I ended up losing in 3 months. It's so individual and it really does depend on how closely you follow your plan as well as the body you're brining into this process

@@snowkitten I think you have done excellent and do not look at your journey as a failure.
I am only 10 weeks post and I had my first f/u visit with the surgeon and I felt like I wasn't losing enough, for him. I was down 20lbs from my last weigh-in (at his other office) that was done about 2 weeks before surgery. He told me to try to only eat two meals right now and if I was hungry in between to drink Water first and if I still felt hungry after making sure it wasn't head hunger to eat fruit. I ask if I could have veggies instead and he said either was fine.
I joined the Labor day challenge here because my next visit with him (at the same office, with the same scale) is Sept 8th. I hope to be close to 200. I am ok with losing 60+ pounds since April by Sept 8th! I will be 4 months 2 days post at that point. ANY LOSS is reason to celebrate!

My surgeon didn't set ANY specific goals for me.
He asked me what MY goals were. And he just said, "You'll do great!"
For the record, at 6 months post-op, I had lost 53.6 pounds since my VSG surgery. And I'd lost 73.2 pounds from my highest weight (thanks to the 11 pounds I lost on a 2+ month diet I put myself on pre-op and the 8 pounds I lost on my surgeon's 2-week pre-op diet).
My weight loss goal was 150 pounds (I'm 5'5" tall and 69 years old). I've lost an additional 5-6 pounds in the 2.5 months since I reached goal, and I'm pretty much done losing.
You can do all the % math if you wish.

Very cool! I'm definitely going to try cottage cheese, pintos and cheese, I heard the Chinese hot and sour Soup is great, and i'm definitely going to work on deli meats, I didn't even think of that.
I tried broccoli and cheddar soup and that was a BIG no-no for my stomach. THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTIONS!!!

    How about cottage cheese?
One of my favorite things at this stage was Taco Bell pintos and cheese. One tiny cup of that was like 4 meals.

me too buddy, and I have 2 more weeks of full liquids. Doctor said up to the consistency of tomato paste.
You can add sugar free pudding! I also blend broccoli cheddar Soup, and I do mashed potatoes at a really thin consistency.

TexasGirl86 reacted to WL WARRIOR in Night Eating Syndrome
I was diagnosed with NES (Night Eating Syndrome) when I was an adolescent. This syndrome has a genetic component and has been an issue in my family for the past three generations. Mostly only the males in my family are conflicted with the cycle of night eating. The cabinets in my kitchen were always locked because me, my brothers, and my Dad would get up (knowingly and unknowingly) 1-3 times a night to get something to eat.
I was determined to break the night eating cycle during my post op phase and did so for the first 6 months. After that, it all started again full force. I wake up three times a night at the same times every night (12:30, 3:00, 4:30). I absolutely cannot get back to sleep unless I eat something. It has always been that way. My food choices are still smart and I have not gained any weight since this problem reappeared. My consumption at night is usually cucumbers with vinegar or pickles.
For those of you that think night eating should be easily controlled, think again. Sleep medications and antidepressants have not helped at all. Night Eating Syndrome is characterized by these 5 primary signs:
    1. Not hungry in the morning
    2. Overeating in the evening
    3. Difficulty falling asleep
    4. Waking at night and eating (usually 2 or more times)
    5. Feeling depressed
I'm currently working through a step by step guidebook. I've reduced eating three times a night to two times night. I'm hoping to get it decreased to at least once a night. When I share this problem with others, I usually get a lecture about weight gain. I'm still including the calories from my night eating into my overall daily count. So, its not a huge problem yet because I've lost 140 pounds while struggling with this syndrome. I would love to be able to sleep through the night or get up only once. Part of me thinks that this is just a habit that I have to break like everything else.
I would love to hear from others that struggle with night eating syndrome. If anyone has found a way to break the cycle or know some effective strategies, then that would be appreciated.

At 11 months out, I go through spurts. Some days I'm starving (especially work out days) and have to be very careful not to over eat. Then I have days where I'm not hungry at all, and food almost repulses me. Today is one of those days. I have to actually force myself to eat today. I don't know how long my spurts will last, but I'll take the "non hungry" days

TexasGirl86 reacted to Cujucuyo in Warning: Fresh/frozen cherries
Just a fair warning, I love cherries, specially the dark sweet type, and have been consuming them in their canned form since I was a kid, even after the surgery once they were allowed, these are OK if canned apparently...
Just avoid the frozen/fresh ones, they cause painful, and I do mean PAINFUL bloating, I learned this the hard way... apparently cherries of all kinds contain a carbohydrate that's difficult to digest and may cause you to feel gassy and bloated, specially if fresh/frozen, now take our tiny stomachs and the pain goes tenfold, I was writhing in pain for 1-2 hours after eating a measly 1/2 cup.

My surgeon recommended Milk of Magnesia- its natural, and it won't weaken your system over time like other laxatives. Take two tablespoons in the morning, and thats it. Some people take it every day.
Also remember that because you are eating so little, theres not a whole lot of bulk. You're not going to go like the old days I don't believe, but try asking your physician.

TexasGirl86 reacted to NCTRNL in It's not my marriage I'm worried about, it's my relationship with my friends...
Well just one friend really but it's been a very interesting experience. My wife is 1000% supportive and I don't have any worries at all that WLS will cause any problems with my marriage. What it does seem to be causing issues in is my relationship with my best friend.
It didn't take a lot of reflection to realize that a large part of my relationship with my best friend, in the past, has revolved around eating and drinking. Now it's like we don't have much to do when we hang out. It's pretty interesting so far and I'm really only 8 weeks into this process. I'm sure it will even itself out but I thought some of you on here might have the same issues.

I'm 3 weeks post op tomorrow! No more liquids, awesome! But man, am I already over this phase!!! Maybe I need some ideas? Here's what I've been eating:
    Apple sauce
    Greek Yogurt
    sugar free Jello
    Protein Shakes
    fruit smoothies (protein added)
    Hummus
    Bell Pepper Hummus
    Artichoke Hummus
    Garlic Hummus
    tuna fish
Trader Joe's organic Soups (Tomato, Tomato Basil, Squash)
What else can I eat? My menu is driving me nuts already. It might look like a good variety, but I feel like i'm eating the same 3 items over and over againl, I need more options! HELP!
Sorry for the whining. I'm done now.

The one thing I wish I would have been more prepared for were the emotional struggles after surgery. Even though I knew it was coming, and I'd already made changes, I struggled with the change in the relationship I had with food. I didn't really realize what a huge part of my life food was. It was almost like mourning the loss of a friend. I still struggle somewhat, and I think I probably always will, but counseling helped me a lot durung this time.

I am lucky too in that my surgeon didn't give hard numbers. Mine gave me statistical info so I knew the history of possibilities.
I find it better to not focus on the scale because it will not always tell the truth. I fluctuate weekly as much as 5lbs even when I had a bad flu and couldn't eat for days, lol. So I've decided that the scale and I are getting divorced. My new love is how I feel and how my clothes fit and what the tape measure says.
I'll visit the scale maybe once every month or so just to annoy it and remind it who's the boss. ????????????

oh my goodness, 1 week on clear fluids! I only had 3 days. When can you switch to full liquids? My surgeon requires 5 weeks full liquids post op, and I'm on week 3. Sick of it! But I keep telling myself "it'll be worth it" + "I don't want my stomach to explode and end up in the hospital for 3 months"...that usually brings me back to reality.
I also avoid the dinner table when the family eats, close the bedroom door, etc. They make sure not to talk about food around me (or they try) which is also helpful.

It gets better I promise. You have already made a huge decision to get healthy. You can do this, the pre-op diet is no joke but after a few days you will get into the routine of it. Think about how amazing you are going to look in a year! Every month you will be smaller! You will feel and be healthier! Good luck!!!!
