Rochester NY
hi! I'm in Brockport, not too far from Greece and Rochester. Gastric bypass June 8th this year. Started at 352 and I'm now down to 292.

So tired of people saying you dont need surgery!
I hate when people say that. I started at 350, how can you possibly say I didn't need it!? It's basically the 'nice' way to say you're unsupportive. My new favorite, I've seen a few people who asked how much I've lost, and I told them and they're all 'wow I didn't realize you needed to lose that much'. Come on. Super awkward. Grrr.. people this week. Lol

Zumba - first time
that is so true! I've been to classes before where if you don't know what you're doing, or you can't keep up, it can be uncomfortable. Zumba is NOT like that. It's fun and easy going. And every class I've gone to has some people doing basic step work and some who are really into it. I've always felt really comfortable even when it gets a little too tough for me .

pre op support needed.
I totally understand that feeling. My boyfriend is the most amazing man I know and so supportive. But he can't understand everything. He doesn't really know how I feel. I can talk to him about it, but I come to this site regularly now, and it really has helped me. I just don't feel alone through this, and that's what I really needed

Help---- how do I even start quitting things ....
that actually makes sense. I saw thus article the other day that talked about what changes when you quit drinking soda, and sweet tooth cravings subside was one of the things it said. Also it said you taste things better. I never noticed that after stopping soda though lol

At the very beginning (Or hello from a newbie.)
you actually might find foods that are currently appealing to you, aren't after surgery. Post surgery I have very little interest in junk foods. I was a big pizza fan, but I have no interest anymore. I know that bread hurts my stomach, so I don't even think about it. And I really don't crave any sugary foods. I might have something sweet (sugar free popsicle, sugar free pudding, 100 calorie frozen yogurt) once a week. And I don't feel like im missing out on anything else. My biggest suggestion right now, is as you're starting the process, start doing research, checking out this site and others, to look into foods. You said you're a finicky eater. Nows the time to start figuring out what you do like that will be good after surgery, because the first year post surgery is critical. It's good to have a plan. Congrats on the decision! We're all here to support you

Zumba - first time
Zumba is a great workout. Good thing to remember too is, if the moves they are doing get too intense, make it easier. Don't do the arm movements, or walk in place for a couple minutes. It will get easier everytime you go

Wls at 17
My younger sisters are interested in the surgery, they're 18. And my only reason I'm against them getting it YET is I don't think they are anywhere near mentally ready for wls. You need a certain mindset for this. You need to be ready to eat healthy, exercise and change your mentality towards food. I think showing a true attempt to lose weight through diet and exercise is important, simply because if shows you know what it's going to take and that wls isn't the easy fix. Unfortunately my sisters seem to still think it's magic. If your daughter puts a real effort into being healthy and understands the consequences of it being a lifetime change, then why wait.

Do you wear a medical alert bracelet
Yeah, idk. I was thinking the same thing. When I Googled and found a handful of sites about it, I assumed that it must be somewhat common... but I've never heard of this before.
-
When did you start feeling better?
Hang in there! It'll get better soon. Just try to get the water down, that will make you feel better and speed up the process

Do you wear a medical alert bracelet
not sure on the sugar thing actually, I just saw multiple that said it. The phone screen saver is a smart idea

Do you wear a medical alert bracelet
I read an article today about Bariatric patients wearing medical alert bracelets. Most said something along the lines of: Jane Doe Gastric bypass no NG tube No NSAIDS/no sugar Anyone heard of this? Is it common? Do you wear one?

I know better, but I...
How often are you eating a day?I know everyone's doctor says different. Mine said 3 meals and 2 'snacks' a day. So I never go all day without eating. I eat every 3-4 hrs. I don't know if not eating all day necessarily would cause getting sick in the evening, but as a whole, only eating 600-800 calories a day and not eating all day could get pretty unhealthy. Glad to hear things are going better and congrats on getting in the 2's. I got there last week

Hi Everyone! I'm New!
Wow! That's awesome how's eating going so far? Tummy doing ok? 3 weeks out I was starting to do pretty good, but there is such a wide range of how people do.

Finally here... my RNY surgery is tomorrow!
Yay! Good luck. Congrats on making such a big step

Hi Everyone! I'm New!
Wow! Good for you!!!! You clearly got your head in the game. Losing all that weight pre-surgery is no small task. It's great to see how positive you've remained despite the bumps in the road you've encountered. Welcome to the family!

Start dieting before surgery?
Don't get discouraged. They can be hard on you, but try to remember they want you to succeed. Whenever I get frustrated at things at my hospital or bariatric center I always try to remember, these people have dedicated their life to help us. They know it's hard, but I can totally admit sometimes I need a kick in the butt to get the ball rolling. Just try making little changes, don't try everything at once. Maybe start working on getting all your Water in, and exercising 3x a week. No one's perfect, I didn't eat 100% healthy on my pre-op diet. But if you can start making small changes to your diet it will make it much easier after surgery. Good luck! You can do this. I know it doesn't seem it now but it gets easier.

Help---- how do I even start quitting things ....
I would try substituting healthier options for your current ones. Try drinking Water instead of diet coke. Or crystal light. Maybe try herbal tea instead of coffee. I found that it wasn't the caffeine I needed in the morning, I just liked a hot drink. It's not easy, and I agree with everyone else, you can't change them all at once. But boosting your water intake and going to the gym regularly are so important post surgery and getting in the habit now will make it a much easier transition. As for sugars, now could be a good time to start checking out healthier sweet tooth foods. sugar free Popsicles are a favorite of mine, and sugar free pudding. I also found healthy choice makes 100 calorie frozen greek yogurts (little bit higher in sugar and carbs than my normal foods, but everyone needs a treat once in awhile!). Most important thing I found pre-surgery is record everything!!! Journal what time you eat and how much. Record how much water you're drinking, and how much you exercise. It can be really helpful to look back and reflect on what you did good and what you can improve on. Good luck!!! You can do this

How much are you eating or were eating Six weeks post op
I wouldn't worry that you're eating too much, you are eating small portions and healthy foods, that's what matters most. All doctors and nuts are different but mine has me on 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. One meal us my breakfast protein shake. 1/2c yogurt for morning snack, 1/2c food at lunch, usually a cheese stick or a couple veggies with hummus for afternoon snack, then 1/2c to 3/4c food for dinner. Sometimes I'll have fruit or a sugar free popsicle or something in evening. Even with eating all that my caloric intake is usually somewhere between 550-800 a day which is definitly not alot. If you're eating healthy, taking small bites and eating small portions you are doing great . As for hunger, make sure you're getting all your water in. That cab make a big difference

New protein source.
I haven't had many issues with it getting lumpy. I use Now Sports whey protein isolate and mix one scoop with 16oz and just shake it really well. I get the occasional clump of powder (yuck) but for the most part it mixes great and I don't even taste it. I've mixed it with other sugar free fruit drinks as well but lemonade is my favorite. it's also low calorie, like 110calories

New protein source.
I'm not a protein shake fan. I power through it in the morning, but don't like it lol. I also add protein powder to crystal light. When I mix it with lemonade I don't even taste it

How much are you eating or were eating Six weeks post op
How much protein are you getting in? Drinking protein shakes? I'm 8wks out and eat btween 1/2-3/4 cup of food. Typically dinner I eat 3/4c otherwise 1/2c or less. Definitly keep up on the water, that will help alot. I add protein powder and crystal light to my water once a day also, get an extra 25g protein and it's only around 110calories
