Worried about dumping syndrome with gastric bypass....advice...thoughts?
I totally understand why you mean by one day knowing this is what you know you need to do and being so sure of yourself and then hearing something that freaks you out! I'm in that boat, Surgery is June 1st. I probably would have changed my mind a million times if my surgeon didn't charge a $1000 if you change or cancel your date. Most days I am sure. I know this is the only thing I can do, I've tried everything else. Whatever happens can't be any worse than what I'm doing to my body now! So I'm going in head first and I'm going to do everything I'm told as to avoid as many complications as possible. This is my only chance to get healthy!

GOT MY DATE - JUNE!
So how are my June WLS buddies doing? Anyone started their Pre-op diet yet? I don't start till Monday (Surgery June 1) and of course that is a traditional pig out holiday for me!! Then I'm taking my Girl Scout troop camping the weekend before surgery so while they are roasting marshmallows I'll be drinking my Protein drinks! Oh this is going to be difficult!

Pre-Op Tests
I have GERD, High Cholesterol, sleep Apnea. Had to have cardiac stress test, pulmonary function test, endoscopy, psych eval, and nutrition consult. Went from first free consult in April to Surgery June 1st with insurance approval!

Now What? Colonoscopy and Endoscopy
Actually you may be a perfect candidate for WLS. Don't just give up! Reducing your stomach will reduce acids along with your Omerazole. The acid is causing a lot of your problems. The hernia can be fixed during the WLS, hang in there. It's not a total scrap yet.

Psych eval or nuissance... you decide
That's just terrible!! Mine didn't ask much about my "love of food" but didn't harp on one thing either. Did you go to someone your doctor recommended? Usually they don't send you to someone who has a history of recommending patients not have surgery.

DVT machine ...
Yep, they want me to also, and I have zero risk for DVT other than the surgery. To me it will hinder me getting up and moving around which would be better than the machine!

Pre surgery diet
Really? I haven't heard of anyone not being on a liquid diet. The whole reason behind the liquids is to shrink the liver. If I were you I would do liquids anyhow, and lots of Protein liquids.

June 1st Surgery Date!
I'm worried about just one week of liquids! My surgery is June 1st also and I start liquids on Monday, of course on a holiday and the weekend before Surgery I am taking my Girl Scout troop camping! While they are roasting marshmallows I'll be drinking liquids! This is going to be so hard!

Did people treat you differently after weight loss?
I have been trying to decide how to answer the folks who ask how I lost weight and I can't decide. Should I say I had WLS so that others can see it works and encourage others to take a chance (like someone did for me) or should I just say "a lot of hard work and dedication" because it will be hard work and dedication????

What did your breast's do?
My surgery is June 1st and I'm currently a 48DD, so friend me and remind me along the way and I'll let you know how the ladies are doing. I don't mind shrinking a little if they will perk up! Currently the sag and get in the way!!!

HELP... Cardiac & Pulmonary clearance
I had to have both of those also and I am on a CPAP also. My doc said it was for my safety and because the insurance wanted to make sure that I was a good candidate for the surgery. In other words the insurance company didn't want to pay for WLS and then me die of some pulmonary or heart condition on the table! For the cardiac test they hooked me up to electrodes and put a mask on my face (very similar to my CPAP) and had me pedal on a stationary bike for 8 minutes, the only really difficult part was the last eight minutes. Apparently the bike adjust to get you to the heart rate they want you at within the 8 minutes and for the amount of time they want you at that heart rate. The pulmonary function test was just a bunch of blowing in tubes. None of it was difficult and as long as you aren't out of breath all the time already you'll be fine.

Ring, Ring

Feeling like I am taking the easy way out :-/
I totally understand the guilt feeling, still dealing with it myself. It doesn't help when people say "oh you don't need surgery, you can do it on your own" and even my Primary Care doctor said "that's extreme, you haven't given traditional dieting a fair chance". Well I have been trying for over 20 years!! Come on people! If I could do it on my own I think I would have by now! I've tried everything, including prescription drugs! I'm not even sure this is gonna work but I gotta try!

Drainage catheter
My doc hasn't mentioned a drain of any kind. I guess it all depends.

Who have you told about your surgery?
I get it, when I first decided to have the surgery, since I feel like it's my only hope to loose weight, I wasn't going to tell anybody. I felt guilt that I couldn't do it on my own and I didn't want to hear all the negative people tell me "it's not going to work, you'll just gain it all back" "that's not for you, you love food to much" "you'll never exercise enough" "you'll be miserable" etc etc But I figured they were going to figure something was up when I wasn't doing my usual eating and loosing weight so I told a few folks, just not my dad yet, don't want him to worry. And yes I got several of the comments I stated above. I haven't found the support I needed from my friends. Some just don't believe in me, some just are jealous and some think this is the easy way out. Honestly I'm tired of defending my decision and I am just going to let my actions speak for me.

Scared
From everything I have read and heard sleeve makes GERD worse. As long as you are getting your Protein and taking your Vitamins you won't loose to much weight. Your body will stop losing weight when it needs to.

Brand new to the forum
Even my PCP said it was extreme when I just asked her what her thoughts were on it. She said I hadn't given traditional weight loss a chance. Excuse me!? I have been trying to loose weight since I was 14! So I changed Primary care doctors. The new doctor told me it could be the best thing in the world for me or the worst thing depending on how I handled it all and how I followed through. I also thought this was the easy way out. I know see it as the only way out! My surgery (RNY) is June 1st and I can't wait to get on with the rest of my life with more energy and ability to do the things I want to do!

What size do you think I might be wearing?
That does help! I have this dream of getting back into a size 10 and was just trying to get some idea of what I would need to weigh to get there! I can't wait to shop in regular stores again!! So many clearance and mark down racks to choose from instead of just the one or two in the large size store!

Psych Eval
Don't worry about it, it's really just a formality and to make sure you aren't a bulimic and have anorexia. Are you going to someone your surgeon recommended? I did and the person who was doing my evaluation talked more than I did! He asked about my family and my support after surgery, etc. Did I smoke or drink, etc. Really not a big deal at all. My surgery is June 1st, hope yours is soon!!
