shirleyjohn001 got a reaction from MSer07 in Hair Loss
I did my one year post op blood work and all looked normal except for my A1C and fasting blood sugar which was a little high (A1c came down from 8 to 5.8 and fasting blood sugar was 102). But they did not mention anything about thyroid. Do you think I should ask them for that specifically?

    Hi,
I'm new to this. I was recently diagonsed with Type2 diabetic and my A1C was 8 and now I'm on metamorphin 500mg once a day and my doc told me to take a blood preasure medicine, though my preasure was normal, but said that you need to coz preasure meds need to be taken when diabetic.
I would like to please know if anybody who has had the sleeve surgery, been able to totally be diabetic free and off meds. Has the A1C become normal and if so, how long would it be, before you see results. I am extremely worried, coz both my parents are diabetic and my parents have been insulin dependent for a few decades, so I dont know if it is genetic and will ever go away.
How long is it advisable to take time off work ? coz I dont have leave since I just started a new job. My job is not very hectic coz I have a desk job and do my work in the computer all day.
I do not have my surgery date yet and dont know what to expect, though this website has been extremely helpful to get more insight or knowledge into what to expect and what not to.
Any response, would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was planning to go alone for the surgery. But since my older daughter knew about it and I was comfortable with her being there, I took her since she insisted. She is 16. I recommend that since your BF and children know about them, you should take ur son, coz the day of the surgery and the next day will be hard and it would be nice to have someone of your own around to get u stuff when ur in pain. But after the first week, you will be able to pull it off well. I was glad I took my daughter and that's the best decision I made. Please don't go alone, unless u don't have one, but since u do then use it. Good luck!

I had a thiamin deficiency last year. We caught it before it got critically low. It is normal this year. Our bodies store certain Vitamins and deficiencies may not cause issues until years later, then it may be irreversible. If you have a chance to attend a class on vitamins, please do so.

    Hi,
I do work a lot on my computer and talk to people, and do not do any lifting at all. Can anybody tell me as how to many days is it generally advisable to take time off from work as I do not have much leave left ?
I only want to apply the minimum that is absolutely required, coz at work I am only sitting at my desk and use the computer.
    Thanks,

The pre-op diets vary from surgeon to surgeon...mine was eating every two hours...i could interchange light yogurt, sf pudding and sugar free applesauce...8 ounces of gatorade a day and a Protein Shake for lunch and dinner
free foods were chicken broth and sf Jello
Some report being allowed to eat light meals at dinner and various other combinations
Ask your nutritionist and I am sure they can give you a copy of what they follow

    Hi ...
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as well, back on march 4th at my last appointment with he anesthesiologist. They postponed my surgery until I got my sugars levelled out. My A1C was 9 at the time. It was all so new to me and extremely frightening to me because I am getting the surgery for the same reasons you are. At this time also, my mother is going through lots of issues with her body which was mainly caused by obesity and sedentary lifestyle she had when she was younger. She has kidney issues, heart disease, of course type 2 diabetes, etc...
For these reasons I am determined to get this surgery done to prevent these type of things from happening to me when I'm older. Of course there are so many other things that could happen to me in the meantime that could affect my health but this I can do something about NOW!
I have a date now(June 8th) but and also on a cancellation list as well. So hoping and praying I get it sooner than later!
Good luck with managing your diabetes!!

I was sleeved on March 18, 2015 and have lost 30 lbs. I am also a Type 2 diabetic, I was taken off Metformin 2 days before surgery and have not taken it since that date. My A1c was always very high, I was on two types of insulin, long acting & fast acting. I am not taking as much insulin as pre-surgery, but still need to use it every day. My family doctor said that it does take some people longer to come off meds, it seems to be more related to the weight loss. I can definitely relate to the worry of family members having the disease. My father died at age 55 of Type 1 related complications and my brother died at age 54 of Type 2 related complications, along with some other issues. My primary reason for the decision was to hopefully put diabetes in permanent remission! Good luck to all my fellow diabetic sleevers!! Let's kick Type 2 diabetes in the butt!!!

I have been really at a sort of stand still for a while. I am making a new standard for myself from now on. I didn't sign up for a quick fix! I signed up for a hard yet rewarding road and having your stomach cut from your body is no joke! So why am I treating it as such. Today I have been reflecting and I need to be proud of myself to continue to grow. 100 lbs ago I beat myself up and it didn't get me anywhere so why would that work now. So I am proud of my journey... And the journey has just begun. The road is long... One year feels long but it's no where near the end! No more feeling guilty!

I was diagonosed diabetic and I hated that disease so much that I was in denial and would refuse to take medcations coz I thought I could do it myself, but the truth is that if you're diabetic and not taking medicine, you are only making your health worse day by day. So ultimately I decided to take metamorphin and the preasure medicine comes automatically with it, coz the presure medicine is required to protect your kidney. I do not have my dates yet and still have to have my psychic evaluation done and hoping to meet the surgeon sometime this June.
But my hope and prayer is that I can put my diabetics in remission after the surgery God willing and never have to look back again.
But my advise is that you please take ur diabetic meds coz it would only help than making ur numbers worst, which was my situation for alomost more than a year. If you dont keep your sugar nos. under control, it can damage ur eye sight, kidney and much more, so please do not ignore diabetics as I have seen the damge its done to both my parents and my lost my dad to that killer disease...

@Cannonbaby- Good thinking. I did not even think about it that it would take around 3-4months before checking the blood sugar. I wonder if they want my A1C to be normal before the surgery? coz nobody mentioned about it. So I guess in my next visit I plan to ask the NP about this.
@@Jamie -Thx for the information, that was helpful so that financially I can plan myself.

In fact I don’t take any other medications other than the metaphormin and 1 BP medicine, though, my pressure is normal, but my doc told me that I have to take the BP med because I am taking the diabetic medicine.
I was told by the nutritionist in my last visit last week that I have to take so many medicines for Vitamins and Calcium and ......which I will not get from my regular food intake. And the cost that was told is almost $175 per month for my Vitamins, which I feel is extremely expensive. It just blew me out for the cost. I was thinking, the idea for doing the surgery was to get away with my diabetes so that I can avoid more complications down the road, coz I know how much this disease can damage our body, since I saw my dad battling this disease.
Would it so much for the vitamins per month? If not, how much should I expect as the cost for the vitamins, so that I can financially plan ahead more wisely.
Can somebody tell me, will I be able to do my normal functions the day you finish the surgery? Or what should I expect before the surgery and what to expect after the surgery. ? Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas would be very helpful, so me to prepare both physically and mentally. I have not yet met the surgeon and physiatrist yet, and hoping to meet them this month.
My hope is that my A1C comes to normal and I am diabetic free which is my prayer!

    @@kathysleeve
One thing to remember is WHEN your A1C test was taken, as it contains 3 to 4 months of cell history. So, if you had it taken a month, 2 or 3 PRIOR to your surgery, it will contain that history, which is NOT going to show you the surgery results until 3 to 4 month AFTER your surgery. To see how well the surgery helped the diabetes numbers, have the A1C take again 3-4 months after your surgery. If your PCP is like mine, they should be having you do the A1C every 3 months for diabetes. Good luck to you!

@@shirleyjohn001 Vitamins are definitely pricey, but $175 per month seems high. I probably spend more like $100 per month. It probably depends on the brands. If your nutritionist is pushing a specific brand, some of those bariatric brands are pricey. The only bariatric branded Vitamin I'm still taking is my Vitaleph Bariatric Multivitamin, which costs me $100 for a 4 month supply. Everything else I take, I buy at the grocery store or off Amazon. And I take a lot more than a lot of people do. My nutritionist requires Multivitamin, Calcium +D3, probiotic, and liquid B12. I take a lot of others on top of those.
Also, for at least the first couple of months post op, you will need to be on a PPI (like Prilosec) to reduce acid production. You may have to be on that for life (like me) or you may be able to wean off of it after the first couple of months.
I don't really know what you mean by "normal functions" the day after surgery. You will spend at least one night in a hospital/clinic. And most doctors recommend two weeks off of work, though many people do manage to go back after one week if they have a desk job.

I was on Avandamet before the sleeve procedure and my diabetes was under control with my A1c at 6.4. Now almost 2 years out I just had my follow up labs and my A1c is 5.7, I stopped the avandamet before the surgery and started taking metformin daily after starting back on solid foods (at about 3 months post surgery). I hope to get off this when I get to my ideal weight. If I need the medication, I am happy to take it since the alternative is the complications of diabetes.
I am off all blood pressure medication!
Funny thing is that I take more pills now (all the blasted vitamins) than before the surgery.
