    Post op and diabetes

Hi there! First off congrats on you're WLS journey thus far! I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 6 years ago. By the time I decided to have RNY I was taking Metformin 1000mg twice a day and Victoza injections 20 units once a day to control my glucose levels. I also had high blood pressure and was on meds for it for about 16 years. Post op I was taken off all diabetes medication before I was even discharged from the hospital. About 2 months post op I was taken off of my blood pressure meds. I take not prescription medication anymore. The only pills I take are vitamins. Lots of vitamins lol! I am so happy I had the surgery! It has been an amazing success for me and my health! Now I will say that it depends on how bad your diabetes is. My sister is a really bad diabetic. She also had RNY and she still takes some medication. It's about a 1/4 of what she had to take pre-surgery. So I would still call that a success. I think weight loss is always beneficial to people struggling with type 2 diabetes. I hope this helps? Good luck with the rest of your journey! [emoji4]

    Hungry all the time?

I had RNY as well. I never had any complications post op thankfully. My recovery went very smoothly. The worst I've had was throwing up from overeating. I don't think you've stretched out your pouch? My doctor told me that it's not possible to stretch out your pouch. There is scar tissue around the area where they reconnect your stomach pouch to your intestine. That tissue is what slows your food from digesting too fast. They did tell me if you over eat all the time the scar tissue will wear down and stop slowing down the digestion causing your food to pass a lot faster. So that's why you get hungry so often. Also I did hear that once you hit the 1 year post op mark your appetite comes back at full force. I can say that I totally believe that because that's when I started feeling hungry all the time. I think all we can do is make smart food choices. High protein, low carb intake. Also stay active. Try and workout as much as possible. I have not exercised much since I had the surgery. I was losing weight so fast that I didn't worry about exercise. I've started working out recently. I hope it helps me lose those last 60lbs. [emoji4]

    Hungry all the time?

I'm 14 months post surgery and I've noticed that I don't stay feeling full for very long anymore? Usually about and hour after I eat I feel hungry again? Also I can hold quite a bit of food down now? I'm worried about gaining? I have lost about 105 lbs. and have plateaued. I still need to lose 60 lbs. to reach my goal weight. I haven't lost anything for a couple months now? I just hate that I feel hungry so often? Usually I try and eat high protein foods because it's supposed to keep you feeling full longer but I still feel hungry again about an hour after eating? Anyone having and/or have the same problem?

    Protein / hair loss

Unfortunately hair loss is just par for the course. I'm 14 months post surgery. I started losing hair right around the 3 month mark. I lost quite a bit. My hair is about half as thick as it use to be. The good news is your hair will grow back. Mine has just started to. I have baby hair again at 32 years old lol!! Just hang in there and don't let the hair loss get you down.

    No Complications

I had no complications with my surgery or my recovery. I never developed dumping syndrome either. I am 5 1/2 months out and have lost 65lbs since my surgery and 85lbs total since I started my WLS journey. I have had small issues with eating certain foods. Like if I eat anything super sweet I get extremely nauseous. Also I have had issues with eating certain hard fruits and veggies like carrots or apples. They tend to get stuck and I end up throwing them up. I just stay away from those types of food. It's a learning process. Your body is going to change drastically. All you can do is ease yourself into it. Go slow. Only try one new thing at a time. You'll do great!

    CARB CONFESSIONS!

I am 5 months post-op and I guess I am lucky in a way because I can't eat anything overly sweet or else I get sick. I tried eating Dairy Queen one night and it made me so sick. My biggest carb splurge is crackers , popcorn, and tortilla chips. My advice to you would be to always eat your protein first. Then vegetables and if you have room left eat your carbs. I know it is hard to avoid the foods you love. You can do it! You just have to keep reminding yourself why you went through the WLS process in the first place. Also I look at old pictures of myself before I lost weight and it really motivates me to eat better and get out and exercise more! Good luck!

One week post op protein makes me sick

After my surgery I could never drink the protein shakes. I still can't. I am 11 weeks post op. Right after my surgery I barely drank protein. I waited until I got to the puréed stage and I would eat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, puréed beans, and I even puréed certain meats. I just tried to get as much of those high protein foods in. Skim milk has like 9 grams per serving. I would try and drink milk as much as possible even though I hate it. I still don't get enough protein. I try but I can't only eat so much meat. I have actually began to hate meat. I want to become a vegetarian but I would never get any protein because I can't stand the shakes lol.

    Fat free Creamer...

I am about 10 weeks post-op. I started drinking regular coffee a few weeks ago. I usually make one 16oz. cup in the morning. I use fat free coffee mate creamer. I sip on it all morning and most of the time I don't finish the whole cup. I switch to water after that. I haven't had any problems yet but I only allow myself that one cup a day.

    Dizzy spells 2 weeks out

I had the same problem. I would get so dizzy and nauseous that I felt like I was going to pass out. When I went to my first post-op appointment they had to give me IV fluids because I was dehydrated. I had a hard time with my intake for the first month after surgery. I'm about 10 weeks out now and am doing a lot better. My intake has increased significantly. I still get a dizzy spell once in a while. I still have problems getting the whole 64oz. of fluid in daily but I try my best. Just try and stay hydrated.
  10. Wow! That looks two completely different people in those pics! Congrats girl!! You look great! I can't wait to get to my goal weight. I have a ways to go. I had RNY on Feb. 16th this year. Last summer I was 310lbs. When i decided to have surgery. I am down to 251lbs. now! I'm really happy with what I've lost so far but I have about 100lbs to go to hit my goal weight. Your pics are very inspiring! Thanks for sharing!
  11. Your true friends will only be happy for you and continue to encourage you through your journey. If you have someone in your life who is making you feel bad for the changes that are happening in your life due to the weight loss you should distance yourself from these people. You should be as proud as you can be for making the decision to lead a healthy lifestyle. Don't ever let anyone take that away from you! Good luck with everything!

    Very scared.. Right decision?

I've been overweight/morbidly obese my whole life. I had RNY 8 weeks ago. I have to say I was scared to death. I even had a moment of regret after the surgery. It was harder than I thought it was going to be. Adjusting to the new me. Mostly the new way of eating. I have lost 32lbs. since the surgery. I am so happy now. I don't have any regrets now. You just have to get over the "hump". Once you do it will seem so worth it. I have a lot more weight to lose but I am so excited to start seeing more changes. I can't wait to be more confident. I can't wait to go shopping and actually enjoy it. I know I have a ways to go but I am so ready for the journey! Good luck with everything!

What will happen if I drink caffeine?

Thanks! I'm usually a one and done person when it comes to coffee. I just love my morning pick me up.

When will I really feel better?

I had the same problem after my surgery. It took about 2 weeks before the bloated gassy feeling went away. As far as pain goes... my pain lasted about a week. I was off pain meds completely after a week. Walking will help get rid of some of the gas. I would just get up and walk around my house. Hang in there!
  15. I'm 6 weeks post-op. I really want coffee and I can't stand decaf! I can tell the difference lol. Anyway I was wondering if anyone has tried drinking caffeinated beverages post-op? If so what were your reactions?? I miss my coffee!!
