I experienced dumping from 2 mango slices and I'm 5 months post op. Everyone is different. Also I can't have bananas or else I'll experience severe diarrhea. However I have had canned pears in its own juice only a few bites as well as canned peaches with no side effects. You should probably try those and only a few bites

I don't dump (although I've never pushed the envelope), but some fruits sit better with me than others. I can eat half a banana with no problem. Berries are OK, too. I had some fruit salad at Christmas with some Clementine oranges in it, and I immediately threw up. I'd bet it was the oranges - they're acidic. You'll just have to try some different fruits and see what happens. Everyone seems to handle things differently...

After surgery, it is common to completely lose one's hunger. This effect wears off during time. The strategy during the "Maintenance" phase is different than during the "Weight Loss" phase. Around the 1 year post-op mark you body is changing. After surgery the part of your stomach that processed fats and sugars was cut away and as a result if you consumed these, this would quickly lead to dumping. But at 1 year, you intestines have stepped forward and changed to perform this function in place of you stomach. Therefore you can tolerate these food categories again. Fats have the property of taking away hunger. Once you reach the "Maintenance" phase, the best meal plan is a meal composed of Protein, fats and carbs with Protein always first. You may find this link useful. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf
I am not sure what is causing your back pain. It might be a Vitamin deficiency or something else. I would not automatically assume the back pain and the hunger are related.

IMVVVVHO, I don't understand why people would opt for the sleeve over bypass. Bypass is the gold standard for a reason. It's the most effective. Unless you have an aversion to taking Vitamins for the rest of your life, go big or go home - bypass for the win

    I second getting a decent food scale - it's a huge help
I use genpro unflavored Protein powder - it has 30g Protein in a tiny scoop, I add it to my Water bottle (24oz) with a crystal lite packet and drink two of those per day. It doesn't dissolve very well, but as long as you give a few good shakes before taking a sip it disperses through the bottle and you can't even taste it. My NUT likes me to get 60-75g protein per day and there's no way to get all of that from food alone.
Best of luck - your food choices sound perfect!

MamaTo3inNH reacted to VDB in One month out from bypass -- amazing results!
Date of surgery was April 21. Now, one month out, here are the results thus far -- After 40+ years of dieting and failures on my health, I am absolutely shocked that gastric bypass has produced such results in one month.
    Results:
    1. Down 45 pounds
    2. Gone from a 54 inch waist to a 48 inch waist
    3. Went into surgery on 5 diabetes meds, now on a very small dose of one med.
    4. Went into surgery after a decade of swollen legs and feet, from edema. Now, edema is 80% better and getting much better every day.
    5. Went into surgery with a real hassle -- urge incontinence. This means that it got almost impossible to keep from urinating when the sudden urge occurs. I was close to Depends. Now, have just gotten through a week with no urge incontinence.
    6. Went into surgery with painful diabetic neuropathy in my feet. Doctor said this probably would not change much. However, the pain is 75% gone. I went the last two days with almost no pain. I had a real problem with using too much ibuprofen or aleve just to be able to garden and swim. Now, have not had any NSAIDS or even Tylenol for a month, and never will again.
    7. Went into surgery on blood pressure meds that I have had to take for 40+ years. Out of surgery on no BP meds, and BP better every day, no need for meds.
Needless to say, I am thrilled with these results and am very grateful to have been able to have this surgery. It has made the year and a half of getting qualified worth it, and the fairly intense recovery weeks were rough but now each day my normal coloring is coming back and beginning to feel great.

My food palette is so much smaller... I can't stand most food. St paddy's day meal used to be my favorite, I was gagging while cookin it for the family and didn't eat a single bite. Right now the only food I can eat without feeling nauseous is fresh mozzarella, black olives, pickles, garlic hummus and triscuts - I still use unflavored Protein powder in my crystal lite and eat 1 sometimes 2 Protein Bars per day. Even yogurts are tasting too sweet. It's VERY depressing. Flip side - im steadily losing weight (down 30lbs since surgery 8 weeks ago) and am rarely hungry.
It's common, and you just have to find a happy medium. Your tastes will
Change on the turn of a dime, and from what I've been told in due time you will enjoy foods again

MamaTo3inNH reacted to losing_the_band in Possibly some good news...
I had my initial nutrition consultation with my surgeon's nurse and coordinator today, and she thinks that my insurance SHOULD approve me for a revision/conversion from lap-band to RNY with only a letter of medical necessity from my PCP, a psych eval, and the nutrition consult, instead of having to jump through all the hoops again for approval. Now whether the insurance will agree with her, we'll just have to wait and see, lol. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. If everything gets approved, hopefully I'll be having surgery around the beginning of June. If not, it could be several more months, since I'd have to do 90 days of dietitian appointments.
So now, I've got my psych eval on Saturday, and I've got to continue nagging my new PCP to cough up the letter. Hopefully, we can get everything submitted around the beginning of next week, and then it's just a matter of waiting.

Yeah see mine never gave me any #s except for guidelines for choosing Protein supplements.
Oh. I also bought Protein Bars. 20g Protein per bar. Those are tolerable tasting, I limit myself to one per day for Breakfast.
Maybe I should get some plain powder and add it to my coffee.

I would speak to your nutritionist. They aren't my cup of tea, but many like the convience. I would be careful because some of these can have loads of sodium and sugar.

I haven't done any prepackaged foods, but agree with having issues getting in the amount of Protein I need. I can't do any meats...I've tried and end up bringing them back up. Just saw Dr Tues and he said most won't allow meats til 6 mo's postop to give your body time to heal and adjust. So...I'm not beating myself up over that. But still have trouble finding other sources that work. I do a lot of yogurts, milk, eggs (hard boiled only) and Protein Bars and shakes. But I get full so fast, I usually can't get it all in which again, causes problems with getting in the amount needed.
