ivy4u got a reaction from RebeccaAR in Sandwich Wraps
I have not eaten regular bread but i eat wraps all the time. I will eat chicken or steak wraps and don't have any problems with it. When i first tried it, i had difficulties with it feeling like it was getting stuck, but tried it again several weeks later and now no problems. If something doesn't feel right eating it at first, wait 2-3 weeks and try again and it could be different. That is one thing my doctor stressed to me.

you could bring bananas, those little apple sauce cups, Protein Powder and you can get bottled Water on plane or before you get on to mix it with, tuna in packets (if allowed). and drink lots of water. You may find that you don't need alot. I can eat something and it will be hours before I am even hungry again. You can always get a Protein Drink in after you land or if you have a layover and that will help with your Protein intake.

I have 2 jobs, one full-time job and one part-time job. They are both desk jobs. I went back after two weeks. I wasn't in pain or having complications. I was actually ready to go back earlier but my doctor wouldn't let me go back until 2 weeks.

Thanks for the advice! I ended up in the hospital twice for fluids, but I am on the mend now. They said there was narrowing in my connections due to inflammation and healing, but that it was too soon to do an endoscope due to tearing risks. So I just had to push it through and get ivs every other day. I'm good now! able to get about 30-40oz of fluids a day!

you may not even need to take those medications after surgery. I took a long acting insulin, short acting insulin, and Victoza all prior to surgery. After my surgery, they stopped all my insulin. They said it was because they didn't want me bottoming out taking them especially when I was in the liquid phase. As I progressed in foods, my numbers stayed low and now I am eating solids and my numbers are still low and not back on any diabetic meds. This surgery was the best thing that could've happened for my diabetes.

ivy4u got a reaction from sleeve32 in Left side clicking under my rib!
I had pains like that at about 3 weeks out. When I took a deep breath it hurt in my ribs and my back and sometimes in my chest. I went to see my surgeon and he ran several tests. Said there weren't any leaks, clots, etc. and that everything with my surgery went well. They came to the conclusion that it was musculoskeletal and that i threw something out of whack between the hospital beds and my beds. So they suggested going to get a massage or going to the chiropractor. I went to the chiropractor and he cracked me and since then I have not had any pain like that. He said that I was really out of line and that is what was causing all that pain.

I had surgery yesterday. I am doing great. I had a lot of pain yesterday but today has been a lot better. The big key is to get up and walk and drink plenty of fluids when you are able. I had my swallow test this morning. Had Clear Liquids this morning and they just moved me to full liquids for tonight.
I am excited for all the different lifestyle changes that will come my way and to see the results!

Good luck to everyone else on here with tomorrow as the big day. I am getting nervous and excited for tomorrow. I have to be there at 5:30am and surgery is at 7:30am so up at 3am to to get ready and travel there. Like the other ones I see, I won't be able to eat or drink anything until the following day when they do the swallow test. I am packing my bag tonight. It has been nice to hear what you guys are packing so I have an idea on what to put in it.

I actually had a very long conversation with my nutritionist and bariatric nurse about Premier Protein ready made shakes. They are a perfectly acceptable solution and give you 30grams of Protein and 1 gram of sugar.
This was their recommendation after I could not tolerate the powdered whey protein isolate. I have been using these since week 2 post op. Recently there was some discussion on this site about RNY patients malabsorbing this particular type of protein. I went back to my nutritionist and shared this info with her. She actually showed me that protein is absorbed lower in the digestive tract. RNY patients do not malabsorb protein. She had a great chart that showed where different nutrients are absorbed, she keeps this chart with her when questions like this come up.
I tried to find a similiar chart on line but will keep looking.

I drink Premier Protein chocolate ready made drinks. I tried a LOT and this one was my favorite. Ask your nutritionist if they have a sample. I've also read where some insurance company's will pay for certain brands of Protein Drinks as well and premier happens to be one of them.

Ivy4u-took your advice and called to see if they received the paperwork (I was actually calling about another claim but thought I'd ask). I was approved. My surgeon's office just got my surgery clearance yesterday afternoon. So this was 24 hrs. ( Less than, really) I'm really happy.

I've always fared better after a big surgery, with someone staying with me. One of my sister's has volunteered to stay with me when I get home from my surgery, for a week or until I feel OK on my own, whichever comes first. Sometimes it's just nice having the company.

I have just a quick question. Did everyone need someone to be with them the first few nights out of the hospital to take care of them or were they able to do things on their own. My mom will be taking me too and from the hospital and only lives 8 blocks from where I live, but I was wondering if I need her to spend the night or if I would be ok on my own at home. I live alone. My kid is in college. I would be interested in knowing people's thoughts and experiences. Thanks

Having someone around the first night is a good idea. My first night home was really rough - definitely the hardest part of the recovery, by far. I couldn't even get out of bed on my own until the next day. You don't know how much you use your stomach muscles for *everything* until you can't.
If your mom can stay with you that night, you should ask her. You'll be able to muddle through if necessary (I did manage to get to the bathroom once on my own when my husband conked out on the couch downstairs and couldn't be raised, but it wasn't fun), but it'd be better to have someone there if you can.
    Hope this helps!

First off, welcome! And congratulations on your decision to take control of your health. Search these boards. This question is discussed and answered ad naseum. People choose different surgeries for many different reasons. I'm glad your friend is supportive but he is not a bariatric surgeon. Your reflux will likely increase or become worse with the sleeve. There is malabsorption with the bypass but that is not a reason to throw it out completely. Just because your insurance will approve quickly does not mean you shouldn't give yourself the time you need to make the right choice for you. Sounds like you just need to do a little bit more research and this is the place to do it! :-)

I had RNY surgery 20 months ago. Within 2 weeks after surgery many of my medical conditions went into remission and have remained there. They include high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, severe heartburn attacks (GERD), frequent urination, and excessive sweating. The weight seemed to roll off after surgery. I lost 20 pounds pre-op and another 90 post-op. And more importantly I have been able to maintain the weight loss.
After surgery, I found it difficult to swallow large pills. I used a pill crusher and a pill splitter. After around 2 months, I was again able to swallow large pills.
In RNY surgery, they cut your stomach in two parts. The smaller of these two parts is now your new stomach. This new stomach is unable to convert food into Vitamins like your old stomach so therefore an individual who undergoes RNY must take daily Vitamins. It is a requirement. Since I have been taking vitamins almost my entire life, I do not view it as a problem. I am still taking vitamins just a lot more of them. I have yearly blood work done to make sure my Vitamin levels are adequate.
Side effects? There is a lot of hassle in getting in the required Protein, fluids, vitamins, exercise in the beginning. But over time it becomes much, much simpler. It took me 6 months to reach my happy state. I would do the operation over again in a heartbeat.
