I'm still a few months from my gastric bypass, but wondering if anyone can offer advice on how to handle existing condition medications after surgery. I'm currently on high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes medications that are all pill type. While I have very high hopes the surgery will alleviate those two medical conditions, I'm not sure I cant stop these medications right after surgery. I know I will need to speak with my surgeon and general practice MD's, but would really like to hear from the folks that have actually been there.

I take two heart and one asthma medication twice per day. I am 4 weeks post op on Tuesday. I had to have my medications prescribe in differences forms for now. I have 2 capsules that I open and pour into yogurt and one tablet I crushing and put into yogurt. Not the tastiest, but I gotta take what I gotta take.

Your post op blood work and blood pressure results will determine all of that.

For the first couple of weeks you will cut them or crush them. After that it will be ok to swallow.

For me they stopped my metformin the day before surgery and we never started it up again. I take blood pressure meds once at night and have been able to swallow that one whole right after the first week.

Everything will work out, try not to worry too much about it.

My dr just kept me on all my meds, and gave me more for pain, nausea, and acid reduction. I'm allowed to swallow all of these whole, but I'm supposed to take them individually and space them out at least 10 mins apart.

I don't take blood pressure or diabetes meds though, just antidepressants, allergy pills, and an asthma inhaler.

you may not even need to take those medications after surgery. I took a long acting insulin, short acting insulin, and Victoza all prior to surgery. After my surgery, they stopped all my insulin. They said it was because they didn't want me bottoming out taking them especially when I was in the liquid phase. As I progressed in foods, my numbers stayed low and now I am eating solids and my numbers are still low and not back on any diabetic meds. This surgery was the best thing that could've happened for my diabetes.
