anissad reacted to joatsaint in So full of post-op questions :) Is it normal not to reach your protein goals 5 days post op?
My doc never discussed how quickly I would be able to reach the recommended Protein goals. And I don't know how many weeks before I finally reached my protein goals. But for weeks, I was only able to eat a can of Soup a day. I didn't worry about it - as long as I felt okay and didn't have any health problems. I knew I'd get there eventually. My primary focus during that time was to stay hydrated. I knew I had enough fat stored on me to keep me fed... enough to last me through a Zombie Apocalypse!

I had my surgery on 11/11/14. The first week was rough. I had terrible back pain, i felt the 'fullness' pain with every single tiny sip of anything, and had terrible heartburn and nausea. I am happy to report that I have none of those issues now! I can eat 1/4 of a cup of food. I can drink larger sips...thank God. And i barely ever get any kind of pain. So far I have tokerated everything Iv tried although I have noticed some changes in how things tastes as far as what I love now. I love unsweet tea for one and before I would have spit it across the room. My starting wait before pre-op diet was 267. I was 260 day of surgery. I lost 17 lbs the first week post op and have been on a stall the last two weeks. I was getting so disheartened. I just kept coming here and looking at old stall threads so I could read their tickers and see how they all got past those stalls. Well the last two mornings I have dropped a pound so Im thinking the stall has broken! so 19 lbs down since surgery. Hope to hit 25 down by12/11 on my one month marker.

anissad reacted to Kindle in How many "meals" per day during purée/soft stages?
From the very beginning I've always just eaten when I get hungry...every 3 hours or so. I don't make a distinction between a meal and a snack. Just eat till satisfied, whether it's a couple bites or a small plate full. It's really as simple as making healthy choices, getting in all your Protein, Water and Vitamins and staying away from simple carbs and trigger foods. But I guess if they didn't make it complicated, the nuts wouldn't have a job.

Yes, ON MY SCALE! I started to notice that I give my scale foreplay when I walk in the bathroom, my husband always says "are u really?!?!?!?" But yes, I begin to say things like, I know you're goin to love me today, please be nothing but good to me, show me nothing but love, go ahead, give it to me, I can take it, then I close my eyes and get on and OMG, let it be .5 less and I have all the sweetest accolades and pet names in the world.
So yes, after a 3 week stall, I literally picked it up and kissed it this morning, 4lbs down after I thought I pigged out a bit this weekend. I say pigged out, really means since I ate a whole half a chicken sandwich WITH cheese...SHHHH, I felt bloated all day...smh. But lo and behold, it was still Protein and it was still in my benefit, so the scale continued on it's downward spiral!!!!
WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!! P.S. That also means, "THIS CHICK" is less than 200lbs for the first time in 17 Years!!!!! GOOO meee, GOOOO uuuuuuuu!!!!!!! Weeeeee doin it together!!!!

When I was on full liquids, my doc's only restriction was that it couldn't contain any particles or chunks. If it would go through a strainer, then it was fine. It took a lot of persistence, but I finally got that piece of prime rib through the strainer!!!!! :-P

@ Hi! I am on my last day of liquids today (surgery in the am) I don't know what your surgeons requirements are for liquids but I had broth, My tip for that would be check out the Swanson broths they have a bunch of different flavors that I wasn't aware of until this like Thai ginger, Mexican, hot n sour ect...they really helped I also added a little bit of plain chicken broth to them because they can be a little strong, spicy. I used the Premier Protein ready made shakes in chocolate, strawberry, & vanilla. I really like them. I was allowed sugar free jello(I think Kool-aid brand is my favorite) also sugar free Popsicles I couldn't find any I could stand so I got molds and made my own out of the Syntrax fuzzy naval Protein mix. You can also use whatever Protein Drink you will be having. I was also allowed a couple pickles a day but I never did use them. Just make sure you don't go to long without a shake . Try to not watch food commercial or mute the tv if that bothers you....it does me. I didn't find it hard at all and I never cheated. Good luck to you! Just keep your eye on the prize! It will be over before you know it

anissad reacted to Betts69 in 6 Days post-op and all is well!
Well it's been nearly a week since my surgery (Oct 23), and I've probably experienced every and any emotion that you can imagine in the last 6 days. My very first thought upon waking from anesthesia in the recovery room was "OH MY GOD WHAT THE H*LL HAVE I DONE?" I was in so much pain, and was so nauseous I was freaking miserable. The doctor was all chipper saying how everything had gone perfectly, and he was very pleased with it all. I was torn between begging for unconsciousness, and literally attempting to strangle my very HOT looking surgeon. I give the medical team all the kudos in the world, they really did try to deal with my pain and nausea, but sadly just hearing someone walk near me, open my eyes, or even blink my eyes had me vomiting all over again. They were putting all kinds of meds into my IV's but nothing was really helping. The first couple of hours after the surgery were truly the worst. However, in all honesty that time period after any procedure really sucks.
Unfortunately for me the nausea/vomiting didn't get any better until Saturday (3rd day post-op). Although it still hits me from time to time. I threw up again this morning, but this bout only lasted a few minutes, and I've been fine the rest of the day. I think today's bout was due to the new medication my surgeon added to my normal regime. He has put me on prescription strength antacid twice a day for six months, and also a medication called Ursodiol twice a day for six months. The second one is to help prevent the formation of gall stones, but the description given with the info pack from the pharmacy says "this medicine is a bile acid naturally found in the body". That pretty much says it all. 1) the pill is enormous and 2) it tastes and smells just like bile. LOVELY!!!! Needless to say I'm fairly certain that was what caused this morning vomit-fest.
On to the good stuff. Although my belly (incision sites) and my insides are still quite tender and painful, I feel good, really good. I already notice a big jump in my energy and alertness level. My body still hurts enough that I have to take it easy, but once it's on board I am eager to test it all out. I went out this evening. My husband bowls in a league on Wednesday nights, so I went with him to watch. I had to wear my pajamas because pants are a bit much for my incisions at the moment, but who cares. I got out of the house, and was able to talk to REAL people for almost 3 hours. YAY ME!!!!!
As for the rest of it. I'm really struggling with the Protein shakes. My stomach is not tolerating any of them at the moment. I've tried every single one I bought. powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury (all flavors and the unflavored as well), Isopure Zero Carb (clear ones the resemble Kool-aid) and the EAS Carb Control in chocolate and vanilla. I'm able to sip about 4-6 times (except the Isopure, one sip and it came right back up) and then no more will go down, and my stomach feels really queasy, and it grumbles and gurgles until it finally gets rid of it, either up or down. I'm not sure what the problem is here. I'll have to talk to the doctor on Friday. For now I'm using Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) with Skim Plus milk, and they are giving me about 17grams of Protein. I've also moved up the time frame for the Greek yogurt and other stuff. (Doctor said wait a week before adding those). I really didn't feel like I had a choice as I was averaging about 5-10 grams a day instead of 60-70grams. I'm tolerating what I’m doing at the moment. I feel good, it stays down and my protein intake is much better than it was.
The biggest surprise to me so far as been how quickly I'm filling up, and how little it takes. It was sort of a problem at first. I'm supposed to start the day with a shake, but I have meds to take first. I have 8 pills and three Vitamins to take in the morning. It takes me over an hour to get them all down. I can only take one at a time, and by the time I ingest the Fluid to swallow that pill, my stomach is too full to accept anymore. I have to wait at least 5-10 minutes before taking the next. By the time all the pills are down, I am far too full to be able to drink any protein, I barely have space enough for my own saliva. Takes another hour or two to get to the point I can drink my protein. This goes on all day long. It takes me about an hour to consume a 1/2 cup of anything (longer if it's something substantial like yogurt or soup). Nighttime is a repeat of the morning except I have even more pills and supplements to take. I'm hoping that maybe I'll be able to stop some of these meds, but for now I'm dealing with it. I think it's kind of funny actually. I sit here and remember eating McDonald's dinner, either a Big Mac Meal (large of course, with soda) or a two cheeseburger meal (large with a soda, if I wasn't that hungry) let's not forget the 10 piece mcnugget I "ordered for the dog" and the two apple pies for dessert. Then of course I would probably end the evening with a pint of Ben & Jerry's, maybe some chocolate or other garbage food. It's sad really, but I never thought twice about eating that junk, usually at least 2-3 per week. I made maybe meal per week at home (by making I'm referring to some sort of prepared food, like TV dinners, potpies, frozen fries and hot dogs, nothing at all healthy here) The rest of the week was some sort of fast food, or take out. It's no wonder my body is in it's current condition. I find laughable to even consider being able to eat any of that, let alone all of it.
Well I've kind of gone off on a tangent here, sorry about that. I'm tired and rambling. I just wanted to share some of what I've gone through, and a couple of realizations I've had. I'll write again, more coherently next time. Have a great night All!

Glad to be home. Trying to sip my fluids in. You almost have to sip constantly. And I have never been big a Fluid intake even before this surgery.
Part of the problem I am having is that all th sugar free Jello and Popsicles as well as pre-made Protein Drinks are way to sweet. I have pretty much been sticking with chicken bullion cubes, Water, and my powder Protein Shakes made with skim milk. I can't wait to start seeing some results.
Thank you everyone for all your encouraging words. It means a lot to me.

The insurance company submitted my paperwork and two weeks later I am approved! I am so excited but finally the nerves set in. I have been halfway through this process before only to quit for one reason or another. I finally had enough and pushed through the months of testing and craziness. I have never even been close to my ideal weight for my height. I can't even imagine it. I am so nervous for surgery. The biggest surgery I've ever had was getting my tonsils removed. I think what's worse is knowing that my family members are very nervous about it. I think for the first time in my life I am doing something that I want without letting anyone talk me out of it. I know it will take forever for December 18th to get here!
