Ask for the nausea patch! There's soooooo much they can do to prevent nausea and throwing up after surgery

We're getting close!! I start my pre-op appointments next week. I have my pre-op physical with my GP on Tuesday and blood work Thursday. No pre-op liver shrinking diet for me. I'm close to "Healthy" weight and my surgical team decided it wasn't necessary for me. I'm soooo very ready to get this GERD out of my life for good!

Everything went great! New surgeon is amazing, very personable but also knowledgeable. As far as he’s concerned I don’t have to repeat anything. I do have to take their preop class/nutrition things and support group but that’s it. The hospital isn’t allowing in person meetings for that until March so I’m at least waiting that long. They said my insurance may require my 6 months to be done with the surgeon performing the surgery, in which case I do have to do the 6 additional months of weigh ins. He said he was going to submit it all anyway and see what happens. Still waiting for my psych evaluation to be sent. Apparently there are additional restrictions on those types of medical records. Hoping they send, if not I will have to repeat that. Thanks for asking! Honestly I’m glad this happened now. I think I needed more time to prepare, make more lifestyle adjustments and really get my head around this.

I had a sleeve 7 years ago and wish I would have known about the high prevalence of damage due to acid reflux after the sleeve. I now need to revise to bypass to stop the damage from getting worse. If you have any history at all of reflux, I'd be talking to your doctor about doing a bypass instead

I had another endoscopy yesterday and the GERD hasn't gotten any better. At least the 2 ulcers have healed though. The doctor who did the scope yesterday recommends surgical intervention for the GERD. I can't expect her to know my medical history so she probably doesn't know surgery is already scheduled for March 1st. Hiatal hernia repair and revision of sleeve to bypass. 30 days!!

Thank you for all the replies and I agree with this. I have another appointment schedule with new doctor in January. Office was so nice, doesn’t require referral, and said I see the actual doctor several times, especially the first time. I’m feeling a little better now and not like I’ve just cut my foot off

From what I've read and experienced, there's no BMI requirement for revision due to complications such as GERD. Some have been able to get a revision based on BMI alone, but I think that's rare.

From what I gather, for most insurance companies, it just needs to be complications from the first surgery. I'm not even in the obese category.

Just got my new date (rescheduled from Jan 4 due to COVID hospitalizations), it's now March 8th. I'm so ready! Let's get this show on the road!!

I've recently stared reading and following the Pound of Cure book/diet. I hope to lose at least another 10 lbs. before surgery.

The only way a surgeon who I've never seen is going to operate on me is if it's an emergency. Follow your gut and find someone else.
My surgeon meets with all her patient's multiple times before surgery. A week before surgery I'll see her for an hour long appointment. I had her do my VSG and she's doing my revision due to GERD. She's still having me do the big hour long appointment.

How do you make a frozen dessert with s-f chocolate pudding and Protein Powder. When I mixed the two and put the in the freezer it just crystalized. Is there a trick to making it work?

Here is something that has helped me a lot...
I watched an interview with a Navy SEAL trainer, where he talked about people dropping out of SEAL training. Roughly 75% of the people who start the training drop out. He said the people who fail have a "long horizon." They are miserable in this training -- wet, exhausted, hungry, angry -- and the people who fail say to themselves, "I can't handle two more weeks of this." They think that every moment will be like the one they are currently experiencing and they quit. The ones who succeed and graduate have a very short horizon. "I can make it until dinner break." "I can make it until they let me take a 20 minute nap." "I can make it through sundown." And when they reach that horizon, they set a new short horizon.

Just tell yourself, "I can make it until I leave work for the day." Then, "I can make it until dinner time." Then, "I can make it until bedtime." Keep giving yourself short horizons until you've gotten through this stage. You can do it!

gabbykittyvsg got a reaction from Summermoose in getting closer--- met with dietitian and insurance update
I met with the dietitian yesterday. She said she was surprised when she first saw me on her schedule because I just saw her a few weeks ago for the annual visit, but then she saw my surgeon's notes. We talked a bit about how I felt about going through this process again, then we got down to business of talking about the post op diet progression. Things have changed since my sleeve 7 years ago, the diet progression is slower, which I think is a good thing. Last time the progression of full liquid to soft was rather abrupt in my opinion, but this time I'll be gradually thickening the texture of food over a few months. She mentioned baby food as an option and that got me thinking, they sell small blenders for this purpose. I found one that was used only once on Facebook Marketplace. I got it for $20, it's $60 on Amazon.

My surgeon drew me a picture of the surgery and so did my dietitian who went into a lot more detail about a few specifics of how food passes through a RNY pouch vs a sleeve and how/why dumping happens. Her drawing and explanation made so many things click. I'm more determined than ever to make the most of this opportunity. Yes, I'm doing it for severe GERD, but I'd love to lose another 20-30 pounds too. I know most of the weight loss will come during the first few months when food is very limited.

I called my insurance company and the rep I talked to was super nice and answered all my questions. She confirmed they got the request for preauthorization from my clinic. I'll know before Christmas!!! My insurance is generally super speedy so I'm thinking I'll know about approval in the next week or so. It can't come fast enough. Despite meds and better eating, I've had a few rather nasty attacks of reflux.

So happy you’ve been having a positive experience through this & have such a supportive team behind you. So many don’t unfortunately. My bariatric surgeon also drew pictures. The GP I had years ago was the first I encountered who drew pictures & diagrams to explain things better. The best. Taught me how to ask the right questions of all my subsequent doctors & surgeons.
All the best for your revision surgery.
