mamie60 reacted to Racewalker48 in Returning to work, what to disclose?
So far, I have had only one moment where I considered telling a co-worker that I had WLS, but I thought the better of it. She asked me what I was doing to lose weight to give her some pointers. I told her how I eat (5-6 small meals per day with a focus on Protein, etc) and exercise, and that was it. After that encounter, I am determined not to tell anyone at work I had WLS, only that I changed the way I eat (which is true), and this is only if they ask me how I lost weight. This was a very private decision, and I want to keep it that way. If pressed, I will politely state that I don't want to discuss it. The workplace is a mine field when it comes to this kind of thing. Some may support, others may criticize, you just can't predict the response.

I am 5ft 5 and my starting weight was 315. I had the sleeve in April 2013. My current weight is 200lbs. The sleeve may have been the slower route but was the best decision for me. My advice for you is to do lots of research and do what you feels best for you. Good luck

I originally was going to have the sleeve and prepared for it but both my surgeon and gastric doctor convinced me to have bypass because I had Gerds and the sleeve they told me would make it worse.
I had the bypass and I'm doing very well.
It's one of the best things I've done for myself.
I got rid of the majority of my meds from having this surgery and I also got rid of my high BP, high cholesterol, diabetes, Migraines, and a few others.
I have no real problems eating either.
I only have had one incident of dumping and that's because I ate to much of an omelet.
First and fore most important is to go with what your surgeon recommends for you because they are the only ones that know your medical history and what would be best suited for you.
Keep us informed of what you decide to do and good luck.

mamie60 reacted to SugarFreeMe in Why does everyone think that RNY = eating vitamins for a living?
Little venting here - I just read yet another post by someone who tells people that if you have RNY you have to take Vitamins every 2 hours, every day for the rest of your life. I don't know who started this crap - I had RNY and only take 2 multi's in the morning and 2 multi's at night along with a teenie tiny Vitamin D capsule. My labs come back perfect, no deficiencies at all.
Please, please, please people - if you haven't had RNY, don't say this crap as a way of pushing your unbiased opinion of RNY on others because it's just not true. I don't live off vitamins, I don't eat them for meals, I don't take them throughout the day. And for the record, before I even had surgery I already took them once a day so essentially I only take them one other time a day - certainly not something to consider when deciding on something as important as a surgical procedure.

My NUT said eggs are tricky they get stuck unless they are a salad with mayo or pain Greek yogurt - so maybe a poached egg would be better a little soft still with a slick exterior then you could get some extra Water into the egg so it isn't too dry?

Pik, for me it was probably a good week before I stopped asking myself why the heck I chose to do this procedure. It was very much a painful and emotional roller coaster. My surgery was on the 8th and yesterday was the first day I had a 'comfortable' level of pain where I could go to the store, visit with family, and drive (still needed a mid day nap). Hopefully, over the upcoming days you will start to turn the corner and slowly feel less pain day after day.

mamie60 got a reaction from bugsandpie in Help with the full liquid diet
Having shoulder pain is quite common after laparoscopic surgery. When the doctor first starts the surgery he/she inserts significant amount of carbon dioxide into your abdominal cavity. This expands abdominal space so that the doctor can see what he's doing. The gas is not expelled per your rectum but rather diffuses slowly out of the abdominal cavity. It is not uncommon to have the shoulder blade pain until 6 to 7 days after

Hi everybody, How's everybody feeling today? I had a pretty good day spent some nice time with my sisters. Thought you might be interested in the following about the Panera bread and what they'll do the customers great! Someone said a while ago that it was good when you're on your puréed or full liquid to go to Panera bread and get a bowl of their broccoli cheese Soup blend it Well today I was out and about with my sisters who have helped me so much since my surgery on July 8th and I wanted to treat them to lunch. At Panera I asked if I could get a cup of broccoli cheese soup and if they would blend it for. Well they did and I ate 1/4 cup and took the rest home for a couple more meals. I just thought you all might want to know.

Brannstuff, I was a ice fiend before RNY . I had RNY July 8th. I can't drink ice cold anymore only room temp. Don't know why but it hurts. In Chinese medicine we should never drink cold to achieve physical balance. So I guess I'll just go with room temp.

I have had the One and now have a Flex.
I liked the One because it is more discreet than the Flex. You can hook it to your bra or pants or put it in your pocket. With the Flex, everyone knows you're wearing it if that matters. I don't care of anyone knows I wear it - I actually forget I am.
The One also calculated the elevation change like the number of stairs you climb - the Flex doesn't do that. The One has a read out on the device, the Flex doesn't.
What do I like about the Flex - it seems more accurate. I like the silent alarms - I wake up every morning to a vibration on my wrist as opposed to an alarm clock. I wake up and my husband can continue to sleep without interruption.
I like the way the Flex synchs with my phone - I just open the app and I have instant feedback.
Neither one is 100% accurate - I use mine as a baseline. I wore it a few days to get an idea of how many steps I take, then tried to increase each week.
In the end, I love the Flex and would buy another one.
Now, if there was a way that the Flex could do my exercise for me, that would be awesome!!!!!

Had my surgery on 7/8, 8 days out. I went to the doctor today got my drain removed yeah! I am down 20 pounds! Feeling good not taking any pain meds. I've been walking on my patio in the back but since the drain is out I'm going to try to walk around my neighborhood. Got transition from full liquids to puréed diet today had 2 teaspoons of cottage cheese tasted good and set well. I feel like I'm on the right path. On Sunday I questioned myself whether I I had made the right decision and cried the whole day. But now I'm feeling good and ready to continue on my weight-loss journey. Thanks to all of you guys for the support. I love this app!

My first grandchild was born August 6, 2013, the most beautiful baby boy. I was visiting one time when he was about four months old. My daughter and her husband were going to be working that evening. And I figured I would be babysitting for him. But my daughter looked me in the eye and said mom we don't think you can handle him you can't get off the couch quickly, you can't hold him to stand up and walk around for very long, we just feel like we need to have a babysitter instead of you. I was devastated but I also understood and realized that she was correct! It was on that day that I decided I needed to do something and probably had to be RNY. So when I joined this decided what my nickname would be Mamie because that's what my grandson calls me and I was 60 when he was born. He saved my life thank you Daniel!

The problem with avocados is there are a lot of varieties & they differ in calories, carbs & Protein. I eat Hass avocado grown in California. Florida avocados are a different variety. I ate avocados pre op & I eat them now but in small amounts. A medium Hass has 250 calorie, 13 carbs & 3 Protein. I have to watch my carbs so I'm careful about how much I eat. Keep a food diary. Very important. I have MyFitnessPal on my iPhone & it has helped me a great deal. Good luck with your journey.

Mamie60 I am right there with you! Had another epic breakdown yesterday choc full of tears, but today I feel much much better! No pain meds, except one regular Tylenol pill, and I'm able to move around great. Slow, but great. I didn't have any drains, but I'm only able to walk a little bit on my street, and will have to keep increasing the distance. It has been such a help to be able to reach out to you and the group to help keep my sanity through this process! Thank you! New favorite meal is Gerber peaches and scrambled eggs! Lol
