optimumhealthgurl reacted to Jersrose43 in Will I be able to go out to a wedding five weeks after my surgery
I did!
Cocktail hour they had roast beef and ham carving station in addition to all the other bad choices. I stuck to have. Cut it up in really teeny tiny pieces.
I ordered a Pinot Grigio and sipped it for 7 hours
dinner - first course was ravioli - I passed it onto the other diners at the table stating I was full from cocktail hour.
Second course salad - I are the couple pieces of cheese on the plate. Passed it to hubby
Entree - I got the fish and ate very slowly and played tricks with the plate. I basically destroyed that fish and made it look like I had eaten. I think I managed 3 ounces. They gave me 10.
Desert was waffles and cream with berries
I passed it onto other diners who had had the smallest entree of surf and turf I've ever seen in my life. These people were hungry
Cake - I took a mini bite
Champagne toast I pretended to drink it.
I danced a lot! No one really noticed my slow eating or lack thereof. It was great!!!

My insurance company didn't cover surgery either. Surgeon's fee was $4500 -which I put on a credit card and the hospital fee was $13k. The hospital required a $3k deposit and will bill me monthly installments for the next year without interest charges. I'm moving my credit card balances to a lower rate card. It wasn't the best financial situation, but there was an exclusion in my policy. My health was more important to me. CareCredit is also an option. Good luck, I know exactly how you are feeling right now!

optimumhealthgurl got a reaction from BeagleLover in Cheating on Pre-Op
I did not cheat pre-op. Those first couple of days I thought many , many, MANY times, I am not going to be able to make it. My NUT did allow for adding 3 oz of lean meat (chicken or fix) with 1 c of salad and that did help me out tremendously.
The reason I didn't cheat was fear I'd go into the OR and there would be complications or the surgery would have to be postponed. You can get through this, it's only for a short period of time that will change the rest of your life!

optimumhealthgurl reacted to MichelleBryant in 8 weeks and 40 pounds
Hi - reporting in here for May 5th sleever! I hit 8 weeks yesterday and am down 40 pounds! Yahoo! I also figured how to get past my 3.5 week stall - eat more calories! My NUT said I had to increase my calories to 800 per day (was eating 400-500) because my body was in starvation mode and holding onto the fat. I started losing again once I increased my calories. Only 10 more pounds to wonderland! Super excited.
How are all the other May sleevers doing out there?

optimumhealthgurl got a reaction from MerMer30 in Looking for July Sleevers!
Good luck to all the July sleevers! I can hardly believe that tomorrow is my day and I'm a bundle of nerves. My nose has been stuffy the past couple of days & now I'm getting post nasal drip....this can't settle in my chest because my surgery will have to be rescheduled.
I managed to drop 10 pounds on the pre op diet and if I hadn't confused it with some of the information I received in my NUT class ....never mind, I'm not going there.
For those on the pre-op diet, hang in there! One of the best things I found that got me through a few days was exercising first thing in the morning. I went for a 1 mile walk and realized I didn't have a headache the rest of the day. You will get through it!

optimumhealthgurl reacted to iamdeannadixon in Can NOT decide between the VSG and RNY! How did you choose
I just received the approval from my insurance and I will be receiving a date soon, and up until this point i have said I wanted the RNY! However now I'm second guessing my decision and want to know how you all concluded on which surgery was best. I'm just concerned that their are not enough long term stats on the VSG which is what led me to picking the RNY. Are any of you 5+ years post op from the VSG and can tell me how you have done thus far. My only concern with the RNY is losing weight too quickly, I want a more gradual weight loss believe it or not!! Please help

optimumhealthgurl reacted to bikrchk in I wear a size wha?
Dropped 12 bags of of donations at Goodwill this weekend and decided to stop by Nordstrom Rack to replace some of what was culled. Ended up walking out of there with a couple of size FOUR's. That word looks so weird when I spell it out. One was a pair of 100 dollar designer jeans in a junior cut I picked up on clearance for $22. Not in my wildest dreams would I have thought I'd ever wear a 4.

I run my own business, so I only took a week off. It was fine, but two weeks would have been great.

optimumhealthgurl reacted to Jersrose43 in My surgery was today and i feel great!
Hi all it's about 3 am
So this has been a FANTASTIC experience.
Arrived at 830 to hospital and Met with surgeon at 10:45
Went into surgery at 11:00 I was prepped in the or and I think by 11:25 was out like a light
Hubby said I returned to recovery at about 1 I stayed in recovery until 6pm
woke up around 3 and was in agony but nurses were great they had some drugs ready for me.
The found a hernia on my diaphragm and have to say so far that has been the majority of my pain. I was unable to take too many deep breaths all shallow as diaphragm was in pain I have pain on upper incisions as well and nowhere else
I think 6 nurses have remarked on how wonderful my incisions look.
I haven't drank anything yet. Nothing. No ice chips not a tiny sip of Water. Will not have until swallow test in the morning. Doc ordered some soaked qtips to help out. I brought my chap stick as someone else suggested.
I was up and walking at 615pm to go to bathroom so walked all of 4 feet! A couple of hours later I walked the hallway outside my room. Did that 3 times. Maybe 10 feet back and forthw once each time
At 12am felt so good I walked that hallway 6 times. All in all great experience so far Gas wise haven't had much maybe a little tiny but that started around 2am.
No nauseau yet. Maybe after am allowed to drink. Hopefully the rest of the experience goes as well as it did today!

optimumhealthgurl reacted to tfowler in Preop Diet...starving!
Thanks for asking this question. My pre-op diet doesn't officially start until July 1, and I'll be on it for three weeks before my surgery on July 22. However, I've started incorporating more liquids into my diet now (i. e., substituting broths and Soups for what I normally would eat). I'm freaking out a little about doing that for three whole weeks, but my mindset is that it's just part of the process and will be worth it in the long run. It's wonderful to read input from so many others about their struggles and successes during the process. It's very encouraging.

Ditto...I had surgery in December and had to deal with a bridal shower, a birthday party at a Thai restaurant, and 2 Christmas parties on my preop. I just drank my shake before going and drank ice Water at the parties.

optimumhealthgurl reacted to ImForgiven in Preop Diet...starving!
I mstart a week from Today on my Pre-Op..... New here, looking forward to it, I've been told the presurgery diet is the hardest thing.... Thinking about starting it early, been told the better the pre-op diet is followed the better the recovery.... I'm hoping for 1 weeks and back to work... Sorry, my operation is July 9th, I've been told going in starving, after the surgery will need to be reminded to eat..... I find that intreging cause I've never been reminded to eat, only reminded to stop.....

optimumhealthgurl reacted to Chele H in Preop Diet...starving!
Can you have Vitamin Water Zero or Powerade Zero? I drank Vitamin Water Zero, it seemed to help with the headaches and fatigue because it has electrolytes in it. I drank so much of it that I can't even look at it now....lol.
The first 4 days are the worst, like others have said the hunger really does seem to diminish after that. Try some hot beverages too, they seem more satisfying....chicken or beef broth sipped from a mug.
You've got this!

optimumhealthgurl reacted to mi75 in Preop Diet...starving!
for ME, the first three days were absolutely the worse, then on day 4 it seemed my hunger just disappeared. it was still a challenge after that, but at least my guts weren't knawing at me the entire time.
During my pre-op I had to deal with my birthday, my daughter's birthday, multiple graduation open houses, a HUGE midwest festival in my town, work parties, and a mini-vacay with the family.
ALL of these things involved huge amounts of food that i would normally have eaten 2-3 plates of. it DID bother me, but I knew i didn't have a choice and just kept focused. i had a few emotional moments along the way too, many tears, but I made it.
you will too. good luck!
