I went shopping this weekend with my family. While in banana Republic I tried on a sweater because I was cold. (not normal for this hot momma!) and it fit. I mean looked good in the front, back, it FIT! I told my family, "I am having a moment! " I bought it too. I have never in my life owned anything from Banana Republic! What a thrill!

    Sparklingbeauty53 got a reaction from LadyDiva618 in Training for a 5 k - BIG deal for me!
My husband and daughter run marathons. I occasionally walk a 5 k and I come in dead last most of the time, if not next to last. They are hard for me and I don't love them. My family runs ahead then circles back to find me and walk me to the finish. I feel very self conscious while doing it. I don't own a sports bra but you don't need them to walk. I am proud that I even did some (total of about 7) but it is hard coming in late.
Well in October I am running my first 5k. I found a bra at Old Navy that actually is a sports bra and it fits (amazing). I am trying a program called couch25k. I am going to follow it religiously and this year I will run it and not feel self conscious at all. I came in next to last year because someone got injured and was behind me as a result. It is in my hometown and I saw loads of people I knew. I want it to be different and the 41 pounds I have lost to date is giving me the confidence to try. Posting here for 2 reasons: Because I want to proclaim it so it happens (keep me honest) and I want to encourage others that have no athletic desires or abilities to tell them it can be done.

Thank you everyone for the posts. It is so hard not to compare yourself to others! I had no weight loss prior-so I started at zero. Now at 41 and the scale isn't budging but I am tossing it out too. I weigh myself too much and 2 times a month is enough, I like that idea. I am too over doing it with this. I have to stop comparing too and just be happy with where I am and count the inches too. Inches do couont! Rome wasn't built in a day and since when was the scale this important to me? Never!!!!! I am just thrilled to be on this train.

Didn't have Tim to read all the replies but I did notice a lot of you are having trouble. I just want to offer some HOPE.
I'm a year and a half post RNY gastric bypass with the silastic ring. I have lost of health problems so the first four months were not very successful for me. I had a lot of set backs and hospital visits, so my time has not all been focused on losing, but the first four months were very slow. Most of my weight has been lost in this last year. I told myself that I had do e something very drastic to my body, and I better use that tool while it works the best in thT first year. So no matter what stalls may come, I kept loosing. Whether it is lbs or inches or even just ounces, count it as a victory. And also remember that if you are exercising, you are building muscle and muscle weighs more than fat, so make sure you measure, because you may not be stalled at all. Also consider your diet, some docs don't give there patients any restrictions, my dr. has us eat only lean Protein for the first 50-60. % of weight needed to be lost then we get veggies back. After we get to 70% lost we are allowed fruits, and at maintenance we are on unrestricted, except for high sugar , high fat foods. I lost all my weight on that plan and according to doc even need to gain a few. You CAN do this. Use your tool and when you get frustrated choose to do something that will benefit weight loss. Exercise is supposed to release those same endorphins that we get from eating, we just need to change our coping skills from eating to exercising, I can't do much with my disAbility, but I'm looking into tai chi or yoga to try and help my body cope a different way. God bless and don't lose hope, find strength in saying you CAN do this.

We all should have them. If something happens to you emergency personnel are trained to look for medical alerts. You are not the same as a normal person. They can't treat you like they would a person who did not have surgery. They can't pump your stomach. They can't just intubate you like normal...they need to know that so you are protected. Also no nsaids which are common practice to use. I threw in no sugar because my blood surgar spikes with glucose ivs.
Lauren's Hope has nice bracelets that don't look as medical like. Discount code FAN for 10% off.
Mine says my name, gastric bypass RNY, No blind NG/Lavage, No blind gavage/OG, No sugar/nsaids. The engraving made the Bracelet pricy (started at $45.00 and ended up costing $77.00 but now I can buy other straps and just interchange the medical engraved part with the new straps. My future plan since I love jewelry. You can choose the color of the medical caduceus (medical symbol) as well. Mine is pink not red. I think it is less scary looking lol!

If you turn out to be a person like my husband and I who want to gag from the sight of a Protein shake at one month out from surgery you want more bang for your buck so to speak. I want it to have more Protein so I do not have to force myself to drink as much. That is a lot of drinks to reach goal on the liquid stage with only 10 grams.
Also something to keep in mind. I really liked some drinks and textures pre surgery after it was no go on those items.
Gritty may not be a good texture on new tummy but then again may be perfect for you.
Protein Drinks are very individual what you like everyone around you may hate. My husband and I drink very different things.
I would not invest in huge quantities of anything and save samples to experiment with after as well as before to help with tastebud changes.

I havent gotten my surgery yet but I am trying to get more activity into my life, that sadly consists of 10 hour workdays and 30 minute lunches, to be ahead of the game for surgery in September/October.
Does anyone have any good suggestions of what to do while chained to a desk? I try to get up and walk at least every hour but I cant be away from my desk for more than 5 minutes before the search party comes to find me. I walk for 20 minutes of my lunchbreak but even that is starting to lose its effectiveness. Ive started to walk on my regular breaks but again, its just not enough time to feel like it is effective.
Any and all suggestions are very, very much appreciated!!!

Small increments in walking are just fine. You do what you can. Google office yoga/ yoga in chairs - and consider "mindful breathing". Google ujjayi breath or ocean breath - a beautiful, powerFULL thing to do at your desk.

I once went to a class on office exercises and they gave us the elastic bands. You can do leg stretches with them, leg lifts, arm presses, quite a few exercises for various parts of the body.
I sympathize with you -- I'm an office geek and you're right about the chained to the desk thing. I have to really find ways to get out of my chair and move because all my work is on this computer. But I'm convinced we can do SOMETHING!

Stretching exercises? How about removing your trash can? I do that so I have to walk to the other end of the office to throw something away. Same for food, opposite end of the office. Bathroom too.
That being said it doesn't help my edema, but at least I can walk still for now.

When I worked in an office, I was lucky enough to have an adjustable desk...I would stand and pace at my position for half my shift. Also..I brought small dumbbells in (I worked the late shift in a call center, and there weren't many supervisors around at night). Desk yoga is wonderful.

Thank you all for your replies!
I printed off a few yoga workouts and mindful breathing exercises to try today. I found a great deal on a set of "desk" fitness bands that I ordered off of Amazon also!
I work in an odd office building where the bathrooms and breakrooms are on the opposite side of the world, so I get in some good walking whenever I need to take that walk to the ladies or get some more Water. I just feel like such a slacker sometimes. I want and need to move more, I guess I'm still just finding out how to make my days more active!!
I will keep looking for new and more exciting things to try and if I find anything good I will pass it on!

My lovenox was a spring loaded thing and the nurses gave it to me everyday and it took 5 seconds. No pain. Leaves big time bruising-big deal. Did not hurt and it is quick so nothing to worry about.
My Proteins are all good and I am losing my hair some. Hard but I can handle it.
Hospitals are scary to everyone. Normal! Walk and the gas gets better. Walk and you get out sooner.
The cons are there but the pros are so good! Good luck!
