Heatherhere1 got a reaction from BeagleLover in Did you feel more satiated/full after sleeve?
I had VSG last month..I feel like im on a low carb diet. I lost more weight pre surgery on low carb high Protein. Yes I eat less and am in the soft food phase but I get really hungry every 3 hours. I have yet to feel full. I measure out 4 oz servings. Mostly Protein. I have had no problem with Water intake.
I Hope and pray this small stomach helps me maintain the weight loss that I will have. In the past I have always put the weight back on plus some.

I was left to decide for myself on coffee as well. I had lost my interest in it for about 6 months postOp but eventually returned to 'the Good Cup'.
I'm one of those who hold that the only thing that improves coffee is whiskey.
Since I had to abandon whiskey 25 years ago in the general struggle against diabetes, a Good Cup of Coffee became very important.
Given the absolutely astonishing wide variety of varieties of Beans and roasting tricks, it is unlikely I'll ever run out of new pleasurable discoveries in matters of 'The Cup'.
A mystery unlikely to be solved, is how some insist the Nobel Bean needs to be converted into a confectionery item.
My own taste places 'Black Coffee' in a category of necessity similar to 'Hard Protein'. Friends of different persuasion inform that I'll never know what I'm missing by foregoing their pasty-replacement concoction.
An old Arab saying is that coffee should be 'hot as hell, black as night, sweet as love'.
Except for the sweet part, that's my cup. And let it cool just a bit.
    To each their own.

Heatherhere1 reacted to clk in TED Talk - Insulin Resistance and Obesity
Thank you so much for sharing this. I've maintained even here on VST that the underlying reasons for obesity and how we lose weight aren't fully understood by the medical field, even if they regularly prescribe the standard 1,200 calorie diet and 90 mins of exercise per week as a cure-all.
Prior to my surgery I was an insulin-resistant type II diabetic. Perhaps it was the very drastic change in diet post op, but the last time I took medication was the insulin they gave me in the hospital after my surgery. My sugars are so good now that they hardly budge all day long, unless I forget several meals or overindulge in something exceptionally sweet.
When I finally had a doctor tell me the signs of insulin resistance? They went back to my CHILDHOOD, a time when I wasn't obese at all - when, in fact, I was the smallest, skinniest kid in my family and my classroom. I can't remember the entire list now, and I'd have to dig out the book that my doctor recommended to me, but chronic Constipation, eczema, endless carbohydrate cravings (even when eating a healthy portion of a complex carb), etc.
I did gain weight starting with puberty and I did continue to pack on pounds over the years despite my many, many diligent attempts to shed weight and get more exercise. I was called a liar, my doctors and nutritionists were condescending and judgmental and I was told that every little ailment I ever had could be cured if only I would just eat less and exercise more.
I have five year old daughter that is very active and a healthy eater. She does not have a diet heavy in processed foods and she does not sit around and consume junk all day. And she has every single indicator of insulin resistance that I had in my childhood - the same indicators my mother and her mother had - and yes, I do in fact come from a long line of short little fat ladies. And she is already obese, even though she gets a great deal of exercise and eats well.
I can only hope that in the future we'll see some breakthroughs that help us better understand the connection between insulin resistance and obesity.
If nothing else, it would be a huge change to have doctors that are actually sympathetic and aren't condescending to us. Nobody knows how to lose weight better than a fat person - we've tried it all - we do not WANT to be fat, and yet the medical profession is constantly treating us as if we're deliberately sabotaging our bodies and as if we're just so incredibly lazy that we don't deserve respect.

    DO THE MATH

    164 Studies,
    161,756 Patients
    Over Nearly 10 Years:
What Does This Add Up To?
BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC SURGERY IS EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PREVIOUSLY REPORTED AND GETTING SAFER!
A new meta-analysis of studies carried out between 2003 and 2012 shows higher remission rates of diabetes and high blood pressure and a lower mortality rate than previously reported. The study, published online in JAMA Surgery, is an update to a meta-analysis of studies conducted between 1990 and 2003 and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, Buchwald et. al.) back in October 2004.

Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis reviewed outcomes from nearly 162,000 patients in 164 studies (37 randomized clinical trials and 127 observational studies), over almost 10 years.

They discovered 92 percent of patients in randomized clinical trials experienced diabetes remission after surgery, slightly higher than the 86 percent remission rate found in observational studies, but significantly higher than the 76.8 percent remission rate found in the 2004 JAMA study.

Remission rates for hypertension were about 75 percent in both the randomized clinical trials and observational studies, while the remission rate in 2004 was 61.7 percent. Body Mass Index (BMI) loss five years after surgery ranged from 12 to 17 in the new study. Before surgery, patients had an average BMI of 45.62.

"With the 2004 study, we now have 22 years worth of data from over 180,000 patients and 300 studies," said study co-author J. Esteban Varela, MD, MPH, MBA, Fellow of the ASMBS. "The data continues to prove bariatric surgery is not only safe and effective in providing significant and sustainable weight loss, but is the most effective treatment today for diabetes, hypertension and an array of other diseases and conditions in people with obesity."

In the new study, 30-day mortality rate was 0.08 percent, down from the 0.3 percent reported in 2004. Complication rates ranged from 10 to 17 percent and the reoperation rate was about 7 percent. Complication and reoperation rates were not reported in the previous meta-analysis.

By procedure, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy resulted in the greatest weight loss, but had a higher rate of complications and mortality than adjustable gastric banding. Gastric banding had the highest reoperation rate (12% in randomized trials), while gastric bypass had the lowest at 3 percent, followed by sleeve gastrectomy, which had a reoperation rate of 9 percent. The new meta-analysis included sleeve gastrectomy, which was not available in the 1990s. Of note, sleeve gastrectomy had comparable weight loss to that of gastric bypass at 5 years.

"This is but the latest study to validate the high degree of safety and effectiveness of bariatric surgery," said Ninh T. Nguyen, MD, FACS, President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery at UC Irvine School of Medicine. "Today we are performing operations that are as safe or safer than gallbladder and hernia repair surgery."

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 78 million adults were obese in 2011–2012.1 The ASMBS estimates about 24 million people have severe or morbid obesity. Individuals with a BMI greater than 30 have a 50 to 100 percent increased risk of premature death compared to healthy weight individuals as well as an increased risk of developing more than 40 obesity-related diseases and conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.2,3

I am going to move this to the research forums here. Other bits of this kind of research is posted there and I think I put some in the 5:2 info links in the

Heatherhere1 reacted to TheBandedPeach in Need Recipes for Liquid Post Op Diet
These were my lifesaver after about 2-3 weeks post OP. I had a lot of fun getting creative and testing out different things. Be careful with some of them, as everyone is different with their band. I was able to tolerate a lot and most mushy food without any issues, but not everyone can right away, so go really REALLY slow with them. Especially with the Peanut Butter or egg ones that are VERY heavy sitting in the stomach....

...And if you have any concerns with trying anything at all, talk to your doc or nutritionist first.

I lost 9 lbs during my liquid faze, even using these recipes! That was 1.5 lbs per week!

    GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY!

J’s High Protein Full liquid Recipes

    PHASE 2: Full liquid diet

This starts 1 day after surgery

NOTE: On the Full liquid diet, up to 6-8oz per meal is OK for 3-6 meals a day with lots of Water and mini 2-4oz Snacks in between (snacks are optional, but can create slower weight loss). Make sure to drink LOTS of Water. The bulk of your fullness should be water. Stop before feeling full. I am consistently losing weight with these measurements.
Remember to drink or eat very slowly. You can train yourself by using tiny baby spoons.
The point of this 6 week plan, I am told is partly to shrink your stomach and get you prepared for the first band tightening where you will be limited to very tiny amounts. The doc wants you to get bored of these foods, because after the 6 weeks, you go strictly to solids and water. No more mushy or liquids.
All of my recipes include ingredients that can be found at most Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joes or Meijers Grocery.
Organic products are all optional, but I (from recent experience) highly recommend for those wanting a more rapid weight loss or healthier system in general. Using skim milk over cream or any other dairy milk will speed it up as well. The nut milks are a great way to sneak in even more nutrients. Most grocery stores carry these organic products now, but you have to look for them.
*All my high fat recipes include only healthy or beneficial fats that have not been processed and do not include any hydrogenated oils. Please check the nutrition labels before purchasing any ingredients.*
My Personal Tips for More Rapid Weight Loss Using the Liquid Recipes:
    1. Use my snack recipes only once a day
    2. Choose only my low fat options from my recipe list
    3. Stay under 1000 calories.
    4. Minimize the amount of sweetener used
    5. Choose a Superfoods recipe at least once per day
    6. Take liquid multi Vitamins from Whole Foods Market once a day
    7. DRINK MORE WATER

I hold it firmly when I walk or I can't even handle walking. We are supposed to be doing a lot of walking to promote healing, that's what I want to be doing!! I'm trying to decide if I'm going to call my Dr. today. Good luck to us all!!

I carried a lot of weight in my stomach area before getting sleeved. By eating a low carb diet for post op, I believe that losing the visceral fat around my stomach was much easier. I did not eat any carbs that were not already part of my high Protein diet except for carbs found in the light soy milk I drink. Everyone is certainly free to eat in the manner that suits them, but I have found eating between 20-30 carbs a day, perhaps less, has really helped. Keep in mind I eat a fairly restricted diet that might not be suitable for everyone.

You are going to get suggestions and advice from all over place.. LOL We all have different experiences... I have always known what I needed to eat in order to lose weight... My issue before surgery was control... and yes.. I probably ate some things that I shouldn't have eaten BUT.... the beauty of this surgery is the fact that it has given me what I didn't have before.. C O N T R O L!!! I enjoy pretty much the same foods as I enjoyed before.. Just very small portions... Now granted.. I do lead with Protein first which definitely fills you up faster but I also enjoy my carbs. I can eat rice, Pasta, etc.. but I do so in moderation. If I crave a cookie I eat a cookie... The difference is that before surgery I would eat 8-10 oreos... Now I have one or two and am completely satisfied. I make better choices because I now eat to fuel my body versus out or boredom.
My philosophy is this..... I didn't have this surgery to be on a diet for the rest of my life.. For the past 20 years I have counted points, carbs, exercised 5-6 days of week, etc... to only lose at the most 40 lbs before plateauing... My body was just too comfortable being fat and I needed to do something drastic to shock it into losing weight.
Because of this surgery I have finally won my weight loss battle! My surgeon says I was the "perfect" candidate and honestly... my entire experience has been pretty easy and nothing short of amazing!!!
I LOVE MY SLEEVE!! Best decision I have ever made and best money I ever spent!!!

There is nothing easy about WLS. I educated the people I told before they could form a negative opinion because I know what is best for me.
If they ever bring up the word easy to me I will ask if they truly think having 85% of your stomach removed and permanently changing your food in take is easy. What about drinking your meals for a month? What about constantly making sure you have enough Protein in your diet or that you are taking your myriad of Vitamins everyday? What about giving up soda and beer for life? Not to mention all NSAID pain relievers which have always been the only pain meds that have worked for me? And besides that to be truly successful with this I still have to exercise like any other person on a weight loss journey... So please enlighten me on which part of this is easy?
If someone says that to you again you should let them know that having that mindset it taking the easy way out by not recognizing that it took a lot of research and hard work even to make the brave decision that you did.
