Hello Michigan. I am just two days from beginning my 10 day pre-op diet and will be sleeved on 9/22. I have been a bit awful this last week, eating some crap I don't normally eat, and will likely go out for a final beer tomorrow! I began walking just yesterday... My two weeks pre-op walks. I am pretty much at a "Bring it on !!" stage right now. I hope to be crazy self centered with regard to caring for myself and making this adventure successful.

sept 22nd... Two weeks. The 6/7 months has gone by and I so glad it was not sooner. I learn something great everyday! My pre op starts Friday. I began my "exercise program" today. Once the pre-op starts, my life changes and I could not be happier!!

I was sleeved on the 29th, and I've lost about 20 pounds since surgery. I've been stalled for the past week. Just hang in there, it'll start up again.

I lost 17 pounds at 7 weeks postop and I was thrilled. If you can't be happy with your rate of loss, then stay off the scale!!!! It's too bad someone gave you unrealistic expectations, because this surgery is a wonderful thing and you should be enjoying yourself. Seriously, you've lost 5 pounds a week and you're complaining? And just FYI, you will probably be hitting a stall soon, so I strongly recommend putting your scale away for at least a month.

Hi guys! I'm new to the site, just thought I would check it out! I had my sleeve done August 2013 in Mexico. I started out 235 wearing 14-16 pants and L-XL shirts, I currently weigh 125 wearing 2-4 pants. It has been an interesting journey to say the least, but one that I would not change- for anything! I would recommend it to anyone and everybody!

I'm reminding myself of the great stats with this surgery! Great reminder for me. Thanks. I've had scheduling challenges getting to any support meetings but I think I need to get to one this week so I can hear it in person. :-).

I'm in a similar situation. BMI at about 38 depending on the day. Other than some sore knees at times and asthma in extreme cold weather or with allergies, I am overall pretty darn healthy. Never had issues with blood pressure or cholesterol. At one point I felt kind of bad because I was the smallest person in my bariatric orientation. It was almost like I didn't belong there. I would be happy with a 50-60 lb weight loss. My dietician said we should aim for a weight of 120-130, I said 150-160 was good enough for me, she wasn't buying it so we'll see what happens lol. I go Oct 23rd and the closer I get the more nervous I get. I wonder about excess skin and how my body will look afterwards. It's hard to find people close to my starting point to see where this can potentially take me.

I believe that the sleeve patients would like to know what they are going through after sugery since day one, week one, 3 week, 6 weeks until a few years post-op, that's why we all are here.
Just hope that my 6 weeks "experience" would help her to get some ideas even it's not yet a life time experience which other members with more experience may answer her question later, why don't you try?

auntjanny reacted to lilijo in I want to hear from others with a lower BMI pre-op
I'm almost 5'1" and weighed 184 at my heaviest, bmi just under 35. At 10 months post op and down 55 lbs and have passed my surgeon's goal as well as my personal goal. Weight loss seems slower if you only look at pounds lost, but percentage of excess weight loss is not. I couldn't be happier with my decision. It has truly changed my life for the better. I have body issues because of my bat wings and midriff roll, but it's a small price to pay. It seems the whole process is easier for those with lower bmi's.

I am scheduled for the 22nd also. I am looking forward to changing my life. I am also terrified of failure. I feel so strong and know I can do it. But then wonder how in the world I can succeed... It is all just kinda messed up. At a support group last night, there was such agreement amongst attendees that WLS was the greatest decision ever made... I think I will be on that bandwagon and hope you will too!!

Sorry for the confusion. The surgery that I had previously in Mexico was not bariatric surgery. It was plastic surgery. Specifically an extended Tummy Tuck with muscle repair, breast lift with implants, and all over body sculpting with Lipo. It was days before I could even get out of bed on my own, much less shower, use the toilet etc. Had I not had the round the clock nursing care I received, I would have depended on family members to do everything for me. At the time I had that surgery, I was on forums for plastic surgery (very similar to these forums) and I heard stories from dozens of people having their surgery around the same time as me and all of the trials and tribulations they had to endure after being sent home only a day or two post-op. I had the luxury of staying in a facility with adjustable hospital beds, 24/7 nursing care, and all of my meals prepared for me, meeting all of my surgeon's nutritional requirements. It gave me the opportunity to recover in comfort, cared for by people who knew exactly what I needed.
Bariatric surgery has a much less significant recovery time, so I see no reason why someone would need round-the clock care for more than a day or two at most.

I had surgery this past Monday morning. Left the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
    Was ready to go.
The trouble with all these "My surgeon is the best ever!" testimonials is that it's like nominating your second grade school teacher for Best Second Grade School Teacher in the World prize. You had one second-grade teacher -- and, therefore, no basis for personal comparison.
Likewise, everyone has only one WLS surgeon. Pre-surgery, our only basis for comparison is word of mouth and the number of times we hear the surgeon's name mentioned favorably. (It's called advertising.)
And after surgery, each of us decides whether ours was good or not by the experience we had. Many of us also invest a little ego and hope in our surgeon being better than others' surgeons -- it's a version of psychological mojo.
All the forums have some people who post incessantly about their fabulous Mexican surgeon -- because they get a commission on future patients they direct to the surgeon's practice. (If you haven't had private messages here or at other boards from WLS patients who just LOVE their Mexican surgeon and want to put you in touch with one of his coordinators, you've led a sheltered life.)
Funny how that doesn't happen for US surgeons.
And yes -- there are some fine Mexican surgeons.
And yes -- there are some fine US and Canadian and UK and Saudi and Australian (etc.) surgeons.
But this silliness that Mexico is somehow natively a better place to have surgery is ... well, silly. Cheaper, yes. But better? I've seen zero evidence for that.

Flying to another country is out of the question, I am not that desperate to put my life in a foreigners hands and have to fly back and forth for follow-ups, and I sure would not advise anyone else to do that!! I am unemployed at the time and am under my husband's insurance. I buckled down and lost 50 pounds last year so I feel I can do it again, no, I think this was a wake up call and put a fire under my behind to get healthier and start doing what I need to be doing.
