It's funny you say that. I had a really good friend years ago who had major issues with overweight and obese people. She got the attitude from her mother, who once told me (when I was about the size I am now, by the way) that if she was as big as I was, she "would never leave the house".
Anyway, she went on to have children, and 2 out of the 3 of them have weight issues. I am no longer friends with this person (for obvious reasons), but I can't help thinking what must be being said to those poor kids.
I just found it kind of ironic that people with such weight biases end up having overweight children. Karma, I guess

My hope is it finds all the people who are cruel and degrading to the obese! Let them live in our shoes and see how horrible you already feel without their assistance!

Hello my name is Kelly, I recently had the gastric sleeve done on January 13th. I was diagnosed with poly cystic ovary syndrome back in 2006 and that is when my weight became such a struggle for me. I have lost 45 pounds so far and feel fantastic!!! I would recommend this surgery to anyone who is considering it.

I've never posted pictures on here before. My co workers found an old picture of me yesterday and wanted to take a picture to compare. We were all amazed at the results. It was very emotional for me. Down about 90 lbs in 6 months. Never been happier!

Good day! I haven't been here for awhile. Today marks six months since I had Gastric Sleeve Surgery. I've lost close to 80pounds and still loosing! From 237 to 159! The loosing has slowed down though. I go to the gym at least 4-5 times a week. Always hungry, but a little bite here and there gets me satisfied. This is the best thing I've ever decided to do...I feel great, all my lab test are great, and look good too! I'm not afraid to go out of my house anymore...I enjoy being with people...more outgoing! Good luck to those that are about to have surgery and to those in the coming months. Congrats to those had surgery...you should feel as great as I!

We all know how we've changed the outside of ourselves but what about the inner person? Once we become smaller/healthier/more active, how does that affect who we are and how we act/react to things? I'm not necessarily talking about an obvious NSV but more how the inside changes along with the outside.

Some of the obvious things are self confidence and self image improvement. I know that I don't keep my head down the way I used to. I look people in the eye these days and I don't hesitate to engage someone I'm in the elevator with, or on line with while waiting to purchase a coffee or whatnot. I know I have a confidence about me that has been missing for a very long time.

I also know that I have to remind myself not to feel superior to heavy people just because I don't look like that anymore. I know if I'm not diligent, I will be right back there again. I also have to remind myself to be patient with someone slower. I used to be that person...walking but struggling with the pain of degenerating hips. Using a cane and having to stay out of people's way for fear of being pushed aside or knocked over. I can walk almost normally now and believe it or not, I am one of those annoyed people if I get behind a slow poke. I can't believe I am not always sensitive about this as I am only a year or so out from that same situation.

Anybody else have any thoughts about how they have changed since starting their weight loss journey..or even having met goal?

Maybe you should hand out literature. I'm 26 years old, and wish someone would have told me "it's ok to think about/have weight loss surgery" when I was 20. My 20 year old self would have thanked you.

I know, right? I even have friends that need/want to lose weight but don't know how to get started. They know I have had surgery but they are against the idea. I brought it up once and won't do it again. They weren't offended but made it clear that they won't do it. But it's hard to not say anything! I know that it took me quite a while to get there to accept that this was an option that I would consider. My b-i-l had the surgery and I thought it was ridiculous! But he looks great and feels great. It wasn't until my sister decided to get the surgery that my sibling rivalry kicked in and I decided to do it, too! lol. So childish but I'm so glad!!! But, I don't know what else would have convinced me this was the approach I wanted to take to lose weight. I guess from all the shows on TV (Biggest Loser, Dr. Oz, etc.) where the doctors on there are saying not to do this surgery. I bought into it.
As far as the younger girls, you are right. There was always 1 or 2 people that were heavier back then but now a lot of them are. The food in their cafeterias have gotten worse and promote weight gain. I don't know how to make change but I'm sure it can happen somehow.

I want to approach her and hand her literature on the benefits of WLS. I want to urge her to drop that doughnut. those fries, that frappaccino and start a lowcarb/high Protein diet NOW NOW NOW while she still has good knees, a strong back, a great metabolism. I want to tell her to get that weight off NOW so she can spend her 20s and 30s looking great in the latest fashions, enjoy shopping at ANY store, maintain her healthy heart.

But I won't and it kills me. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.
I have two girls in high school and I just see teens getting bigger and bigger and bigger. I remember when I was "curvier" than most of the girls in my high school and I was a size 2! I wasn't fat by any means, but most of the girls had stick arms and legs, no boobs, no hips. Now these girls have big bums, huge boobs, muffin tops that make Dunkin Donuts jealous. There used to be 5 or 6 heavier teens in a grade, now about 40% of them are in the overweight range if not almost obese.

I am not saying WLS is the answer for teens, but I am wondering when we are going to get it together and teach our children good nutrition NOW so they don't suffer with obesity later. I seriously worry about the future of our kids' health.

Comeflywithme reacted to Ange2992 in band to sleeve month month 8 and feeling great!
I've seen a lot of posts on here about people being scared or confused and there aren't a while lot of us that transitioned from band to sleeve so I would like to share my story in hopes to give some people hope and incouragement. In 2010 I had the lap band done. My starting weight was 320. It was a struggle from day 1 between the swelling in my stomach not letting me eat or drink, to twork months later having to get my gall bladder taken out. The first year is always a learning process. I didn't tolerate fills all that well because I was so sensitive after surgery. 3 almost 4 years go by and with a lot of hard work and gym time I lost a total of 100lbs. This brought me to 220 which still put me in obese category (I am only 5 feet tall and 22 at the time). For my own happiness I decided that my goal weight was going to be 130. Whatever I had to do I was going to be 130. Hard workouts, no carbs, etc. Well I tried this a few months and I lost 5lbs at best. My dr. Told me that the band would only take me so far and I was at that point. Well I didn't want to accept that. I decided to go with the sleeve because I knew I was struggling and I knew that if I did this those last 80 or so lbs would be easier to take off. He removed the band first in May and I had the sleeve done in July of 2014, exactly 8 months ago from today. It was a scary decision, and yes I had the same troubles I did when I first got the band with not tolerating liquids for a week and having to stay in the hospital a few extra days and nights. BUT let me say that it is the best decision I have ever made for myself. I am now 23 and 153 lbs and shrinking every day. It's definitely not a cake walk I still have to closely follow the drs orders but I've never felt better, my feet rarely hurt anymore, ailments that I never knew were the result of my weight are gone. I've lost a total of 167lbs and I feel almost normal. I still have about 20 lbs to go but to get this close is beyond mind blowing. If you're nervous and are in the edge of doing this do it. If for no other reason to just live life the way it should be lived and feel great doing it!

I am so very proud of myself! I have been trying to make serious eating habit changes in preperation for my liquid diet and the diet of a new sleever. ive finally found a Protein Shake that i like and that is gentle on my lactose intolerant body, im upping my Water intake as much as i can, ive cut out junk food, bad Snacks and my "trigger" foods. I am listening to my stomache tell me when ive had enough to eat (which has always been hard for me!). Ive been trying to get outside for walks with my daughter, even after a long day at work. These little things give me the courage and confidence to know that i can do this! I will be a healthy person! It will get harder before it gets easier, but i know i can do this!
I have been reading posts on here for quite a while and i want to thank everyone for all the answered questions, general iinformation and good/bad experiences! its so helpful to know that there is such a great community of people just a click away... we are not alone in this!

Comeflywithme reacted to Alex Brecher in Fast Food: What to Eat When the Unthinkable Happens
You are absolutely determined to lose your extra weight for good. You get weight loss surgery and are 100 percent committed to your high-protein, low-calorie weight loss surgery diet. You clear the junk from your kitchen and stock up on healthy foods. And, of course, you vow never to eat fast food again.
That may work for a while, but sooner or later, you’re going to find yourself at a fast food restaurant. It may be because your friends or family insist on going. Or, it could be your only option at a time when you’ve forgotten to prepare a healthy meal, or you’re running late in the morning before work or in the evening after work.

Don’t panic. Wherever you are, you can find a healthy meal that has some Protein and won’t make you gain weight. Just stay calm so you can make a good choice. Here are some suggestions for the top six fast food restaurants in the U.S.
    1. McDonald’s
Some people may blame it for America’s obesity epidemic, but the country’s top hamburger restaurant actually offers some choices you can live with. Skip bacon, fries, sauces and dressings, anything with double or triple the meat, and anything labeled “crispy.” You can always get away with ordering a burger or sandwich without the bun or bread, or eating just the filling from a snack wrap.
    The following are good bets.
An egg white delight muffin, with or without the English muffin, for Breakfast.< /span>
A fruit ‘n’ Yogurt Parfait without the granola topping or oatmeal with apples and without cream, for breakfast.
A grilled sweet chicken chili or Southwest chicken snack wrap without ranch sauce and without the tortilla.
A grilled chicken sandwich, hamburger, or cheeseburger without the bun or bread.
    A salad with grilled chicken.
Apple slices or a tangerine on the side.

    2. Subway
Subway can live up to its reputation of being a weight loss-friendly restaurant, but not all menu items are good choices for your weight loss surgery diet. Watch out for their breads – none are whole grain – and skip the pizza. Also, beware of fatty fillings like seafood and tuna salad and meatballs. Of course, stay away from sides and Desserts like chips and Cookies.
    The following are good bets.
Egg white and ham on flatbread (or just eat the filling without the bread) for breakfast.
Salads with lean Proteins like black forest ham, oven roasted chicken breast, turkey breast, a veggie patty, steak, or ham.
Apple slices and Water to go with your meal.
Tons veggies to make your sandwich more filling and nutritious but still low-calorie.
Mustard, balsamic vinaigrette, or a fat-free sauce.

    3. Starbucks
Don’t blow your diet on beverages. If you’re not careful, you could get 600 calories and 80 grams of carbohydrates from a single drink at Starbucks. And the baked goods? Best not to even look at them, unless you want to risk dumping syndrome. Still, you can get away with a Starbucks drink or meal that you don’t need to be embarrassed to tell your surgeon about.
    The following are good bets.
Decaffeinated coffee or tea without milk or whipped cream. Use almond milk and sugar-free Syrup if you want to jazz up your beverage.
Spinach and feta breakfast wrap, egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich, or reduced-fat turkey bacon breakfast sandwich without the tortilla or bread.
    Fresh fruit.
    Chicken and hummus bistro box.

    4. Wendys
Like McDonald’s, Wendy’s is another hamburger restaurant that can really do some damage if you’re not careful – but you can get away with a high-protein, low-calorie meal if you do your homework first. Stick to “Jr.” sized burgers and skip the fries, chicken nuggets, fried chicken, and bacon.
    The following are good bets.
Salads with grilled chicken and without high-calorie dressings or toppings.
Jr. burgers and cheeseburgers and grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps without the bun or bread and with mustard instead of a fatty or sugary sauce or dressing.
A side salad and apple slices.
    Unsweetened iced tea.

    5. Burger King
What can we say? Americans like their hamburgers. Burger King is the third hamburger restaurant that ranks in the top five fast food chains in the U.S. You know the drill. Skip the bacon, fries, onion rings, double and triple burgers, and crispy chicken, and don’t even think about sundaes, shakes or pies – unless you want to feel sick from the sugar. There are plenty of options for high-protein meals as long as you skip the bun.
    The following are good bets.
Maple flavored oatmeal with apple slices for breakfast.
Ham, egg, and cheese biscuit without the biscuit for breakfast.
Yumbo hot ham and cheese sandwich without the hoagie bun and with mustard instead of mayo.< /span>
Tendergrill chicken sandwich, veggie burger, or Whopper Jr. without a bun or mayo.
    Side salad.
Chicken, apple, and cranberry salad without the cranberries, or chicken Caesar salad without the croutons.

    6. Taco Bell
As with the other restaurants, you can get in big trouble at Taco Bell, or you can get a good meal. Stick to the smaller menu items and choose from the Fresco menu to get items under 350 calories. Taco Bell offers plenty of high-protein menu items, but you’re better off skipping the tortillas, taco shells, and tortilla chips.
    The following are good bets.
A.M. Grilled Taco or Crunchwrap without the burrito or taco shell, if you must get breakfast at Taco Bell.
Chicken taco or burrito without the tortilla or taco shell.
Salsa, pico de gallo, hot sauce, red sauce, or pizza sauce.
Fresco grilled steak or chicken soft taco.
Fiesta taco salad with chicken or steak and without rice – don’t eat the shell.

YES I totally felt like that even up to the last minute and every meal I ate the last few weeks was like "this is the last time I will be eating this"....well, 10 months out all I can say is NOT! I still cook and bake for and with my teen all the time and I eat everything and anything, in moderation that is and watch myself during the week but weekends all bets are off so I splurge on pizza and chocolate and anything, in moderation I repeat.
You'll be healthier and happier and you WILL cook, bake and eat with your teen as I do. The first months are a little rough but when you see that scale go down, your energy levels go up and you feel healthy and look gorgeous, it'll be the best thing you'll do for yourself. Go for it, don't be scared and life will be normal again before you know it. Good Luck!!

You're comfortable now, but will you be as the years go on and the health problems associated with obesity begin to manifest? Right now, you are young and beautiful and your body is resilient, but unfortunately, youth is temporary. Think about your long term health.
Also, pregnancy is complicated by obesity. If you are planning to become pregnant, losing weight first would be a very good thing to do.
It may be that you can lose weight and maintain the loss without surgery, but if you don't believe that's your reality, WLS may be your best option.
