Insurance Denying Coverage of Surgery Scheduled in 3 Days Based on Assumed Alcohol Consumption
This person would be a state level person, I would search the name of your state and "insurance commissioner" or try variations of that doesn't work. http://www.insurance.wa.gov is the website of the Washington state guy, don't know where you are. ..

Insurance Denying Coverage of Surgery Scheduled in 3 Days Based on Assumed Alcohol Consumption
I would ask your surgeons insurance coordinator and your psych Doc to go to bat for you. I have always asked about that question on med docs, because of this exact reason. If you respond yes to the "Do you drink?" question it sounds like your an alcoholic even though you are only having maybe 1 beer a week or just at social occasions! It is the way they ask it, there is no way to say sometimes, maybe once every two months, I have two drinks at a party but nothing imbetween... I just shared this during my psych evaluation and told her I hate that question for this very reason. She explained that she understood that I only have a drink or two every once and awhile, and that they were trying to identify those who were drinking excessively. She shared that a recent patient was drinking two bottles of wine every night at dinner and didn't get that it was an issue for weight loss surgery. In any case, if they are going to accuse you of being an alcoholic, they better have more than stupid question to go on! Maybe even your state insurance representative could help, here in Washington our guy is a hero because he goes to bat for individuals all the time. One woman was denied coverage because her ex boyfriend beat her up, some stupid clause was referenced, it was huge in the news, the insurance company backed down and paid her claims. ..

Wait for Self Pay
Self pay here, they offered me an apt less than 6 weeks from my initial consult, said they could" fast-track" me through the medical tests, still need to have the nutrition and psych evaluation appointments (Just because you are self pay doesn't mean you won't split your sleeve if you aren't mentally prepared:-D). After that it is just the blood test and endoscopy. So apparently they would have moved as fast as I wanted to move though the testing phase. .. I had to slow it down because of some business travel, so my appt is June 11th.

June 2014 Sleevers Check In!
Im hoping for end of June. Busy jumping thru all my insurance hoops to qualify. Must be great to have something set. Hi Everyone, My surgery date is June 11th, any other June dates out there? Yes, it feels good, but I am also apprehensive, there it is in black and white, something I have been working on for a year, is finally going to happen! Also, my work is really turbulent right now - not job security issues - just really busy issues, I am scared that something will come up and I will have to change my date. If I try to be pre-emptive and change my date now, that just means that it will change again and again so I am going to wait for a month or so and see if I can stick to June 11th... My Mom just chimed in - she is on a cruise that week and can I change the date? - I am sticking to this date for atleast a month!

Sleep Apnea or No Sleep Apnea - that is the question
Not sure, but I believe if you had no sleep issues they wouldn't ask you back for another night!

Cheating the consultation scale...
I am so on board for the "why do our insurance companies not get it?" question, driving the need for people to gain weight for insurance acceptance! Being in the middle of the scale, the "don't gain any weight or your surgery will have to be in a hospital" area, I just wish all health insurance covered the surgery especially since it is acknowledged that this procedure saves the insurance companies money in the long run. Hopefully they catch on soon!

Got my Date!
Hi Everyone Got all of my dates yesterday, finished my nutrition and psych evaluation, so now have dates for my endoscopy and my vertical sleeve, the big day is June 11th! There some risk, because I may have to travel for business in June, but at least I have this date reserved. Just a reminder, I am selfpay, so my hurdles have been my own research, funding, and my work travel schedule.

Eating More Carbs = Craving Even More Carbs
This "addiction" or whatever you want to call it, is real for me too. I can do great for a week or so, and then one slip up with carbs and I find myself desperate for that next fix. I am pre-op and intend to raise this issue with my nut and possibly even the psych evaluation. I am afraid that if I reveal this issue that it may raise some concerns, but I am more afraid of setting myself up for failure. I am looking forward to the tool that this sleeve can be...

Pre op diet

Books
Ditto! This is a great book! I also liked weight loss surgery for dummies, it had tons of good tips, but keep in mind it is much more general as it covers all types of surgery.

SABOTAGE DREAMS
Oh geez, I already dream about food, and my surgery date isn't set yet! I had one the other night, but I had fallen pursue hard off the Wagon of my pre- pre-op diet! I have been trying to lose a few to show the Doc that I am indeed in the right frame of mind, well one telecom that went to 8 pm and driving home starving, well I stopped and fell victim to my vices diet coke and a cheeseburger. That night I dreamt all night about eating bad for you foods and felt just awful in the morning. .. And this is before the sleeve! Hold on to your butts! This is going to get interesting!

How common is shoulder pain?
Ree, i was told last year that gall bladder pain can feel like shoulder pain, do you also have pain under your rib cage, right side? Not trying to diagnose! but share my experience... I complained of shoulder pain and under rib pain, my gp said "textbook gall bladder" and then sent me for a ct scan. Luckily it wasn't serious. I am pre surgery, going for a June date.

Funding falling through- so depressed
Have you exhausted non formal loans, I.e. Mom and Dad? Another option is borrowing from your 401K, so no credit checks. ..

Family plunged into panic mode :(
RJ I support you and respect your trials and tribulations, I have to say I was proud of your daughter for defending you at the grocery store, I don't care anyone's history - Why should a stranger freak out over spilled milk? Your Daughter obviously loves you very much and her Mama - Bear has come out to protect you. Do you remember that comic where the Mom would turn into a bear when she needed to protect her son? Like his first trip on a school bus? I pictured her as big Grizzly in grocery aisle. Anyway, you hang in there girl and we are here to support you :-D
