Bless you. I feel for you. I'm a former smoker. I quit cold turkey the day I started having trouble breathing a rushed to hospital. Diagnosis: COPD. Trust me, you want to quit before ths diagnosis. I wish I had quit earlier. It has been almost a year and there are times I still want to smoke. I don't. I'm convinced I will die if I take up smoking again. please get all the help you can. Have you tried Chantix, nicotine Patches. I will pray for you. I know your pain.....but please stop before you know my pain of COPD.

caroline2 reacted to LipstickLady in my missing stomach
My excess stomach never did me any favors. It allowed me (with my help, of course) to over eat tremendously. It caused me to have constant hunger and cravings. It got me to 264 pounds and just below the diabetic line. Because of my weight, I was unable to do so many things, and I missed out on so many opportunities with my kids.
Five years ago, a lemon sized brain tumor was found in my noggin. It's estimated that it was growing there for about ten years. They cut that out because it was affecting me in a negative way. Six years ago my gall bladder was removed due to gall stones and severe pain.
I didn't hold on to any of these things because they were making me unhealthy. My stomach was no different. You would have a cancerous growth removed, I assume, or a sketchy mole. You would fix a bad heart or liver or joint. You would remove a tonsil or appendix if you had to. Why not part of your stomach if it would make you healthier?
    Think about it.

I do not agree with this at all. What about single people or even widowed people? Not everyone is in an intimate relationship. I'm so upset after reading this that I'm having trouble putting my thoughts in words. That's really all I can say now.

Yes it's a great article but might leave singles or people in bad marriages feeling like they have no recourse. If you are in these situations you can find solutions to your isolation too but it might take a lot of work and possibly some therapy. I know firsthand that loneliness can lead to all kinds of risky behaviors.

Yes, in theory this is a good article but it absolutely can lead to risky behaviors. Also, it is not much healthier to load our emotional needs onto another person instead of onto a fork. We must find the acceptance and comfort within ourselves, not expect an outside source to fix it, be it arms or food. I have undergone a lot of trauma and loss and terror in the last year and recently found solace in the arms of someone who was there for me when I needed a human most. Unfortunately, I really let my guard down and leaned upon this person too much, and they weren't able to handle it and withdrew their comfort just when I had cracked open the cavern of need.

This is an interesting article, Mary Jo. Choosing sex instead of food is hard advice for me to take, and I've encountered a lot of obese women who have a personal history like mine - survivors of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, with years of promiscuity and other dangerous acting-out behaviors. Even obese people with picture-perfect childhoods are likely to experience years of self-loathing that's intensified by interpersonal and societal messages about body size.
Like mistysj, I also worry about transfer addiction. I'm in a long and stable married relationship, but I have a single WLS friend whose post-op sexual escapades have been disastrous and include one date-rape.
This is just another example of how complicated obesity is - a dense tangle of mind-body issues that weight loss (however achieved) is not going to cure or even treat without a lot of work on the part of the patient and her/his support team. Just putting together a support team is hard!

Also, nobody every got pregnant from eating a donut. This philosophy of sex instead of food could lead too all kinds of scary outcomes and could actually become a transfer addiction. Sorry but the more I think about it, the more dangerous the advice seems.

ok, here is to everyone who is putting that they are a slow loser... no we are not. There may be some that are losing faster but we have all tried to lose weight on our own and not very often were we able to say we lost 30 lbs in 4, 5, 6, 7 weeks! If it were reversed and we were putting on the same weight in the same amount of time we would be freaking out cuz the weight was piling on. Don't discourage yourself. We have made a major physical alteration to our body and 2, 3, 4 months is not a lot of time to allow our body's to adapt. As long as you continue to lose in the long run that is the goal. Like many have said we didn't get this way overnight so cut yourself some slack. Stay positive!
I have this post printed out to myself... trust me there are days I need to listen to my own words!!
Keep up the good work everyone!

People are trying to help you by trying to work out what you are eating in order to give you some insight into why you may not be losing. You said initially you followed a plan, then you said there was no plan. It is confusing. No one is making you feeling like a criminal, they are just trying to get an idea on why it is going wrong for you.
I am in NZ and also did not have strict rules, high Protein recommendations to. However I read a lot and worked out what worked for me. It may well be that you would benefit from counting protein, following a stricter plan etc. it certainly works for thousands and thousands of people who have WLS. After all, it is not like what you are doing now is working is it?

ummm, what do you want to eat? What I want to eat would sure as anything get me fat/fatter again!
So, I focus on Protein and veggies ALL the time. I avoid sugars and carbs (because I CRAVE them and if I start I really can't stop (yes I am a junkie)).
So do on vacation and have a WONDERFUL time. Try to be "normal" and not place food at the top of the fun Pyramid!!!
At 8 months out you will be a pro!!!

Thank you. I have been thinking about this for over a year, talked to a therapist, and even weighed it all out in my day to day life. I looked at how my kids will be effected. And after talking to the 3 older kids, I'm confident that this is what they want. They have been part of the process. They've known this was what I was thinking and they actually want it too! They think it will make everyone happy in the long run. And I'm ashamed to say, they will be happier when we don't have the tensions in the house. That said, I'm ok with my choice.... And they're on board!?! It's a good time to do it!
