WHY?
Do you really think people have VSG so that they won’t dump so that they can cheat? Why would they even have WLS. I honestly don’t think that is anyone’s motivation. What revision statistics are you looking at? I hope you’re not basing it on board postings because that is self selection and not population based. And I say again, we can’t predict yet for whom which surgery will work. For many the sleeve creates a new set point and the reduction in grehlin eliminates the desire to binge—long term. I don’t understand the people on this thread who say the sleeve is temporary or short term.

WHY?
Honestly I don’t know because I’m not there. I don’t think anyone can predict accurately what choices they would make in circumstances they aren’t in. But based on my avoidance of other forms of surgery for decades when I was obese, probably not. But maybe now that I know what it’s like to live life at a normal weight that would motivate me. But I think there are far more people who don’t regain large amounts of weight with the sleeve than there are those who do. These boards see more of those who regain for obvious reasons. I also have developed new ideas since my weight loss. Most of us had surgery for our health. The first pounds we lost were Health pounds. Then many of us go on to lose more weight and that I call vanity pounds. Usually the regain is of those vanity pounds and we tend to forget how many of the health pounds are still gone and beat ourselves up over the vanity pounds. I honestly don’t think people should fret too much about the regain of vanity pounds. That’s pretty much... normal. All people do it as they age, whether they have a history of obesity or not. So I believe I would consider that normal and work to lose it as any normal person does.

WHY?
Exactly this. We can’t tell ahead of time what surgery will work for whom. Hopefully one day science will advance enough that we will have better predictors. I chose the sleeve because I didn’t want the possible nutritional deficiencies that a bypass is more likely than a sleeve to leave you with. I also wasn’t comfortable with the increased risk of other side effects that both DS and RNY have over the sleeve. I had considered RNY for almost a decade and had never been convinced because of the risks and side effects. As soon as a learned about the sleeve I knew that was something I could get behind. I was a binge eater. Obese from early on. Snacky slider foods were my jam. As I’ve said I still can’t let Cheez its in my house. The sleeve has worked wonderfully for me for five years.

I got cocky
I’m five years out and still can’t eat two eggs. Pretty sure I will never be able to. I couldn’t eat eggs at all without pain for about six months.

Overheard Staff Joking About My Body
I don’t disagree that what they did was rude, catty and whatever else has been said. I was just talking about the HIPPA issue. I misunderstood the situation—seemed to me like the break room shampoo bottle situation you describe. A locked office after hours. My mistake.
-
Overheard Staff Joking About My Body
My misunderstanding. I thought they were in the office and both involved in the care. I stand corrected. Yes. I do.

Overheard Staff Joking About My Body
I’m gonna be the odd duck here; but while I am truly sorry you had to hear what they were saying.... what is the HIPPA violation here? They were in a closed office with the door locked, taking amongst themselves. It was not meant for anyone else to hear, they believed they were in a private, secure, locked, closed office. They did not mention a name or any confidential medical information. They were letting off steam and venting in the black humor those who deal with life or death medical and mental health scenarios do. I may get stoned for this, but what did they violate?

Food Before and After Photos
Yes!!! I love leftovers!!

Belly rumbles
Yup. I’m five years out and still noisy as heck.

How does pain compare?
Similar to the gallbladder. Haven’t had the hysterectomy. Way better than a c section

Low fat salad dressing that tastes GOOD
I add dressing mixes into Greek yogurt (fage 0%). Hidden valley ranch powder... or you could add in mustard and Splenda.

Cancer
Exactly and NO they do not.

Cancer
No you were saying that the money was coming from the sweeteners. It’s not. They do not have any vested interest in these results and the actual disclosures on the article show that. This is real science in a peer reviewed journal with no money trail to follow.

Protein Shakes
Tons of people love premiere protein, I can’t stand it. If you find you can’t either, my favorites are Quest (esp cinnamon crunch and the new coffee) and Syntrax Matrix (esp peanut butter cookie)

Cancer
Thanks for finding and posting that. If anything these researchers receive funding from pharmaceutical companies so it would be AGAINST their interests to find benefit from artificial sweeteners. This is why the have to disclose funding sources and interests in scholarly articles, so these results are really interning!.

Weight loss rates? Stalled already?
The three week stall is sorta infamous seems like that’s where you are.
-
Do you prefer caffeinated or caffeine free coffee protein?
Caffeine! And my doc never limited it. We could have coffee in the hospital if we wanted.
-
Intermittent Fasting
Not my experience. I have a sleeve and I do IF here and there for various reasons. It’s not about not eating all day, it’s about limiting the window during which you eat. Say an 8 hour window and then fast the other 16. So if you delay your first “meal” till 10am and have your last meal at 6 you’re good. That’s what I do when I do IF. And it doesn’t make me any hungrier than any other time. I still stop when I’m full. A lot of vets do it for regain and it works quite well!

Partner’s weight
Aw poor guy! Would it help if you reminded him that as a guy who is taller, heavier and has more muscle mass he literally NEEDS more calories than you do?

Fiber
Benefiber was part of my docs plan from day one. By a month out I was doing both soluble (benefiber) and insoluble (psyllium husk or Metamucil). But contact YOUR doctor and see what their plan entails. You trusted your surgeon to cut you open, best to trust your surgeons advice.

When Does Skin Stop Shrinking?
About six months at goal. That’s why most plastic surgeons want your weight stable for that long before they do surgery.

I bought my little Cheez Its again I just cant stay away from them
Can’t let those things in my house. They are my kryptonite.
-
I cannot finish
What does your plan say? They are all different. Mine was OK per my plan at six weeks, but I couldn’t tolerate it without stomach upset for closer to a year.

I cannot finish
I don’t even serve full ears anymore. Everyone gets a half!

Tips for getting your fluid in?
Ask your doc but most allow you to count protein shakes and drinks. Usually they don’t allow you to count caffeinated beverages like coffee. Try all kinds of drinks...iced herbal tea, water with sugar free flavor drops like mio, crystal light, sugar free electrolyte drinks or water enhancers like NUUN. Try all temperatures! Iced, cold, room temp, warm and hot. Add some lemon to your water. Experiment! I couldn’t drink tap water for a long time it felt too heavy but bottled water was fine. Go figure! Just keep trying different things till you find what works
