Sleeves and or "pouches" as they are sometimes called. Do unfortunately stretch out.
"Long-term gastric pouch dilatation is the primary theorized explanation for weight regain in the post-operative period following SG. Patient noncompliance with diet regimenscan lead to mechanical stretching of the gastric pouchdue to consistent intake of larger meals [15]. Patients need to comply with strict dietary habits to ensure minimal stretching of the gastric pouch."

If only that was true it's impossible to prove a point when some are just too close minded or stubborn to admit they are flat wrong even when you show them medically publicized journals and xray pictures. And just a little reminder to everyone, we all sure heard a lot of false information about the band when it came out too, it was only after years of doing the procedure that we were able to learn the real damage it could do. It will be the same with the sleeve. Not so much damage, but stretching and failure rates for many. Thankfully some surgeons are already taking note of this so that they can properly educate their patients that it IS a possibility, while others sadly still have their head in the sand.

I have had 3 different doctors tell me the same thing. Because my sleeve is twisted as well, it is a bit complicated. With that said, once I go in for surgery I will be sure to give a full report. Because on this forum it is all about proving a point.
Side note- I had my sleeve in 2012, at that point still a newer procedure. I think each year they are learning more and more.

Don't waste your time going back and forth with lipstick lady. I have found that she us a very negative and condescending individual. I had my run in with her and told her how I felt and she responded with that Same sarcastic ok and winky face. Do your research and get your corrective surgery. This is your journey not hers and you and your surgeon know what's best for you!

That is not what you are doing at all. You now have another example that you can try to deny. Go ahead, tell sleevenchica that she couldn't possibly have a stretched pouch because you and some other idiot surgeons say it can't happen.

The difference is I'm willing to say that it is not a guarantee that it will happen, I will even say that it is not necessarily common but you refuse to acknowledge the credible research of many others out there, even when there is proof of it !
And , It's not hostility it is lack of tolerance for stubborn, close minded opinions that are so obviously wrong.

Wow, you amaze me. Not only do they refer to the sleeve as a "pouch" many times but the article plainly states "Conclusion
Weight regains following the Sleeve Gastrectomy is a concern. Due to its relative infancy, there exists limited information on long-term outcomes following this procedure. The role of gastric dilatation and long term circulating ghrelin levels in causing weight regain needs to be further clarified. The management options for significant weight regain are emerging and include conversion to a malabsorptive procedure"
there are many other studies out there that say the same thing, I can post more of them if you would like, are also lots of xray pictures showing dilation post sleeve. AND I myself had a sleeve that stretched out !! How you can argue with the facts are beyond me and obviously a waste of my time. It's a shame you are too closed minded to admit what has already been proven by the medical community.

That's the way to do it, put down those that have to go in for repeat surgeries.... This is why I departed this forum in 2013. The condescending tones of those that feel because their experience went well the first time and goal was attainable that the rest of us are cheating and don't do our research.
Listen, the fact I have to have a second surgery sucks.

Raises hand, I too have a dilated sleeve, pouch whatever you want to call it. It does happen. I do not believe there is enough data available to say it doesn't. Although, the procedure is not new, it is newer in the bariatric world. Surely there is not enough sleeve data post pregnancy.

Band07 reacted to Lapbandster in For anyone considering lapband.
I am also having issues with my band.
What I find interesting is how OVERLY CONFIDENT the surgeons are when discussing a surgery that there isn't THAT much research on. (I think we have maximum 15-20 years of research, and we didn't have real reliable data until about 10 years ago since it was such an uncommon surgery. That's my opinion at least)
My surgeon was so pumped for me to get the lapband and minimized the risks
-Now I am reading that 40-50 percent of lapband patients get the bands removed within 10 years (easy to believe based on the amount of posts in the complications forums)
-It is linked to esophageal dysmotility
    - Scar tissue builds up around the band making the removal surgery much more complex than the insertion
    - The scar tissue can build up so much that it can cause permanent restriction even once the band is removed
I went into this thinking that it was GREAT because it can be "reversed" if needed. That is not the case.
I personally doubt I will recomend this surgery, and am hoping to get my band removed because the more i read the more I feel that my band is a "ticking timebomb" and that something will eventually go wrong. Why wait until it becomes an emergency?

Yes, I get the terrible gas as well though I seem to be able to keep it in the bathroom, and find myself praying the walls aren't too thin ! Milk is a no no for sure and the bathroom issues are constant and not just in regards to dumping. High sugar foods are the worst for dumping though.

I had surgery 4/23. I'm on purée until Thursday. A LOT of these suggestions sound more like "soft" food phase to me. Purée should be baby food or apple sauce consistency so unless you are blending them or mashing them into what you would give a 6 month old baby you may be getting ahead of yourself.

Band07 got a reaction from nieuwevis in Alcohol
This is from the ASMBS :
Misconception: Many bariatric patients become alcoholics after their surgery.
    Truth:
Actually, only a small percentage of bariatric patients claim to have problems with alcohol after surgery. Most (but not all) who abuse alcohol after surgery had problems with alcohol abuse at some period of time prior to surgery. Alcohol sensitivity, (particularly if alcohol is consumed during the rapid weight-loss period), is increased after bariatric surgery so that the effects of alcohol are felt with fewer drinks than before surgery. Studies also find with certain bariatric procedures (such as the gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) that drinking an alcoholic beverage increases blood alcohol to levels that are considerably higher than before surgery or in comparison to the alcohol levels of individuals who have not had a bariatric procedure. For all of these reasons, bariatric patients are advised to take certain precautions regarding alcohol.
If you're someone who occasionally partakes, there is really no reason not to continue to do so. Telling patients to never drink again is absurd and completely unnecessary. Yes transfer addiction can be a concern but there are many things besides alcohol that are risky. I for one more less became a whore after I lost 100 lbs. Thankfully it wasn't long lived and I came to my senses before I ruined my life and my reputation !

I also have a 9' bypass. When I talked about it with my surgeon about this subject he asked me "What percentage of what you use to eat are you eating?" Yes, it's a lot less, but I feel if I didn't eat healthy I could easily gain weight.

If you had been banded chances are you would have lost some but not all your weight or perhaps none at all as the band is hard to perfectly adjust and most people find they are not crazy about the new feelings that come from being banded. If you were banded you would never feel "full" you would stop eating when the pain in your chest/shoulder or back told you too. If you were banded you would have many foods that refused to go through the band and you thew them up instead. If you were banded chances are you would have reflux from food being stuck in your pouch. You may spend countless nights sitting up because laying was too painful because you ate something within 3 hours of going to bed. Your band could embed deep into your stomach or perhaps decide to fuse to your liver. If you were banded food you ate yesterday with no problem may cause you pain and suffering today. AND I say all this as someone who loved my band, and lost all my weight !! But I know it's not a good option for anyone. If you were banded you would at some point need a revision. All WLS is a gamble, none is without consequences.

Weight loss is always slower for revisions (except for some of the band to sleeve patients) because your body is already used to calorie restrictions and high Protein. You don't get the initial shock to your body you do with your first procedure. I'm on my 3rd, it's very slow !! 24lbs In almost 8 weeks. Of coarse how much you have to lose also makes a difference. Typically revisions have less than virgin patients but not always.

Sure ! With the band, I did very well, it changed my life. I kept it very tight however and I had a lot of reflux and back and shoulder pain and honestly after 6 years I was sick of feeling stuck all the time, sometimes I would be up all night uncomfortable because of something I ate hours before. I also had a couple of dilated pouches so I knew it was already not what it had been in the beginning. When the sleeve came out everyone said how amazing it was and how you never felt "stuck" just full. I had also read a few things about the band embedding into the liver over time and I just got worried that only being 35 at the time, what would another 10/20/30 years be like with the band, that was scary to me so i had it removed. From that day on I have been hungry all the time and my portions have always been larger than any other sleever I know. Iv had X-rays and my "sleeve" is very large and distorted and no matter how much I try (eating right, crossfit 3x a week !) I'm still slowly and steadily gaining.

Hormones are stored in fat cells, as we lose weight our emotions are all over the place ! Definitely talk to a doctor, you may need an estrogen patch or yes antidepressants. Also, as the weather is getting nicer be sure to get out in the sun ! A great natural antidepressant ! Are there groups you can join locally ? Does your doc office offer support groups or can they give you the name of someone else in your area that may be interested in a support person ? You're new life if just beginning !! You're doing amazing and need to get out there and start enjoying what you've worked so hard for !!
